Ride the Storm: A Cassie Palmer Novel

I really didn't like this book Ride the Storm: A Cassie Palmer Novel as much as the others - it was too frenetic. It was surely a stop gap storey that ran and ran and ran head long. She didn't even spend any time with her " Husband" but with a bare mention. She spends more time with her body guards and playing catch up but with this book I didn't get the impression she got ahead at all. Not very satisfying compared to her usual books and it leaves you hanging... There's Mircea with "The Brunette" from the painting made of real jewels under the sheets and she tells her to make like a tree and you know the rest. Cassie just uses her power and moves her into some muddy field?????? Going to have a talk?????OK????? All blase.
With the whole back and forth with Pritkin numerous times I can't even remember if she accomplished what she set for.

Brilliant Gut-Wrenching Debut

The first thing I want to start with is a trigger warning. This book contains vivid depictions of sexual assault, pedophilia, and rape. If any of these are triggering for you, this book will be difficult for you to read. It is a truly beautiful, brilliant book but it was very emotionally draining and difficult to read.
I first heard about Pointe a few months ago and my interest was piqued because of the backdrop of ballet, but my first impression was that there were so many things for the author to juggle. It seemed impossible for me that Theo’s life could be presented in a natural way. I was wrong. Though hers was a quiet voice, after a bit of reading, Theo’s voice settled over me and I became fully engaged with her story.
The setting of Pointe reminded me so much of my own upbringing, in suburban Chicago in a mostly white neighborhood. There was one vivid recollection of Theo in middle school during a lesson on the Civil Rights Movement where the teacher singled Theo out because she was black. I’ve never felt so connected with a setting in a book before, especially as Theo would take the train into the city (as I did all throughout high school). It was just very well done for me.
The reading experience of Pointe was similar to my first time reading Wintergirls, because although I love both books and would absolutely recommend them, they were difficult reads. With Pointe I made the decision to finish it within two days because it wasn’t an experience I wanted to draw out. There were beautiful scenes in this book, but also scenes that made me shake with sorrow and anger. What Pointe executes perfectly is making the reader truly understand how and why victims can blame themselves and be so groomed by a predator.
My only negative thing to say is that the climax of the novel - which I won’t spoil, but I’ll just say involves Theo revealing what happened to her on a grand scale - did a fade out. I wanted to be in that scene and experience it, as gut wrenching as I know it would have been. And I always have this desire, but I would have enjoyed spending more time in Theo's recovery, because ending so abruptly seems too neat for all the things Theo was dealing with. I also wish the author would have mined exactly why Theo and Hosea’s relationship was so problematic (especially by connecting it to Theo’s childhood experiences).

Okay, so this book was definitely a book I had to sit down and digest for a while, something that I had to sit back and say what did I just read? The story was amazing though; gut wrenching and gritty at times but something that is very realistic. Pointe follows Theo who has overcome heartbreak, an eating disorder, and her best friend being abducted, but when her best friend (Donavon) returns very dark memories being to resurface.

So we’ve got Theo who is working hard at taking her ballet career to a professional level and getting her life back on track. When Theo was thirteen she had a boyfriend that had left her without any warning and just disappeared, after her boyfriend disappeared she went into a depression. Around the same time her boyfriend left her best friend was abducted and everything began to spiral down and Theo winds up with a severe eating disorder. Now that four years have passed and Theo is doing better, eating better, dating semi-better guys, and then everything changes. This book is filled with gut wrenching and heart breaking scenarios that Theo has to overcome and at 17 years old that can be tough. Theo is a character I absolutely loved reading about, she was real, I could feel her through the pages, and though there were times I wanted to shaker her, I wouldn’t want her any other way. She was a real teen going through some really rough stuff for her age and she had her faults, her strengths and she was just someone that was completely relatable and got you completely enthralled in her story.

I would most definitely recommend this book, it was a beautiful story with real gritty truth to it, but I would have to say to keep the audience to a mature young adult, some content could be graphic. - Shannon (US)

All the right moves...

Brandy Colbert has penned an emotional and gripping coming-of-age story about a girl searching for grace amid harrowing shadows. Theo is a ballerina who pushes herself to the limits, striving for perfection, but yearning for escape from the strictures she imposes on herself. This is an inspiring story of someone trying to get up on her own two feet, rising on their tips to stand higher than she thought possible ... if only she could stop tripping herself up.

Theo is drawn as much to chaos as control. While working tirelessly to prove herself worthy of a future in ballet, she struggles with an eating disorder and is tempted by the usual teenage exploration of drugs and sex, embarking on a covert relationship with Hosea, her rehearsal pianist and the boyfriend of a close friend. She knows it's ill-advised, but that somehow makes him all the more tempting.

Theo is no stranger to guilt, and seems determined to generate and endure more of it, punishing herself the way she tests her body against the physical pains and demands of dance. Roiling inside her is fear that she's partly responsible for the disappearance of another friend, Donovan, who went missing years before, either kidnapped or run away. She doesn't know, and truly doesn't want to know. When he returns unexpectedly, it raises truths she has worked hard to ignore -- but this is a girl who has prepared herself to face the harshness of life, and and when she finally does it is a thing of beauty.

Colbert's tale is a riveting study of the clash between creative and destructive impulses, with language that captures gritty reality of life with poise and elegance. "Pointe" moves fearlessly into the darker caverns of a young heart, the kind of places anyone could disappear into, if they're not surefooted.

A bright soul in a dark time

I have finally, at the age of 33, gotten around to reading Anne Frank's diary. There is little point in adding another glowing review. Everything has been said. But after reading some of the negative reviews, I feel compelled to respond. It seems there are two primary criticisms (Three if you count the ridiculous idea that the diary is a forgery, which I won't dignify). The first is that Anne doesn't talk a lot about the war or the holocaust. To this, I can only say, that's all for the better. She was a thirteen year girl living in total isolation from the rest of the world. She really had no special expertise or light to shed on these subjects. There are many excellent history books on both of these subjects. The second criticism is simply that the book is boring. She talks too much about her day to day life, her thoughts, her feelings, and so on. To this I can only say, what part of "Diary of a Young Girl" is ambiguous? The annex was her entire world. What do you expect her to write about?

What a few don't seem to understand is that this is not a "book about World War II", or even about the holocaust. If that is what she had written about, the diary wouldn't even be a footnote in history. This is the story of one young girl, in her own voice, trying to figure out what it means to live, to grow, and to be human in the most depraved and inhumane circumstances. She wrote about her hopes, her dreams, her fears, and occasionally about peeling potatoes. But the thing that some people don't see is that even when writing about the most mundane topics, she was actually writing about people, about how they endure and falter, about how they come together and how they fall apart. And despite the enormous injustice she endured, she always made the case for optimism, for hope in humanity, and for love of life. I don't know that I can agree with her, having adopted a more cynical outlook, but that just increases my admiration for her and my shame in myself for not living the gift of live to the fullest.

The other thing that stands out is the maturity of the writing. After reading just the first entry, I was blown away by the eloquence and clarity of Anne's writing. I could hardly believe that I was reading the prose of a 13 year old girl. She does write a lot about the trials and tribulations of being a teenage girl, but the voice of the writing does not feel childish at all, except perhaps in its optimism. The world lost a great talent and a brilliant soul to those murderous barbarians.

This is a difficult book to digest, and two days after finishing, I'm still haunted by it. Anne's optimism, faith, and courage inspired me throughout, but made the knowledge of what would come at the end all the more a bitter pill to swallow. All that we can do is to honor her by making sure her story and the story of millions of holocaust victims are never forgotten and never happen again. So far, we're not doing so well with that.

And there, I've done it. I've written a review. I didn't intend to, but I did. So go out and read it, if you haven't.

This is a large book. Not a pocket book.

The revised critical edidion was released from the Netherlands Institute for War and is the most comprehensive study of the diary. The first 195 pages, before the Diaries of Anne Frank (which is three editions of the diary. Her original journal, her manuscript as she edited it, and the popular story with her father's revisions)is a complete history of Anne Frank, starting with the pictures of young Anne and family. Then the horrifying arrest. Miep reported the final moments with the Franks. After "betrayal" the book tackles the question of how they were finally discovered after so long in hidding in the annex. So close to German defeat. Then the sadening story of "imprisonment and deportation". Included in this edition are the Tales "From the Secret Annex and Cady's Life." I found the work impressive, The extents to prove the legitemacy of the pages, the story and pictures, that completed the picture started by Anne from her diaries.

Essential Reading for Humans

No real need for this review, but was prompted by Amazon, so what the heck. This is an important book. Not great literature, maybe, but a document that provides insight into a time and place, as well as a very bright, self-aware young woman with an amazingly optimistic outlook, given her circumstances. She grows more thoughtful and introspective over time--the girl writing the later entries has changed quite a bit from who she was when she began, which is interesting. Her crush on Peter (who is living yards away, just over her head) gets a little repetitive, but it's totally understandable that this was where her thoughts went. Essential reading for human beings, no matter who they are or where they are from. At the end, there are some photographs. The one that struck me the most was of a young Otto Frank, the only one of the eight who were in hiding to survive, shown in his German Army uniform from WWI.

SignatureReviewed by Jennifer Michael HechtThis is a very strange masterpiece. It is an ancient Greek tragedy, but also new, and not just because Carson is its brilliant and original translator. The work of only three ancient Greek playwrights who wrote tragedies survives: Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides. They were the voices of distinct generations. Sadly, only a few of even their plays have made it down to us. Worse, the plays were often written as sets of three, and only one full set survives: the Orestia, Aeschylus's story of the blood-drenched Atreus family.The odd thing is that among the surviving plays of the other two, Sophocles and Euripides, there exist plays about this same family, at different points in the action. Putting them together—as Carson does here—gives us a whole new set. Creating an Orestia comprising a play from each of the tragedians, translated by the same person, was the idea of theater director Brian Kulick. Carson tells us in her introduction that she initially resisted. As she had already translated two of the plays in question, she happily gave in. Lucky for us. We get to witness the horror unfold while also watching the ancient style develop: ever more players, ever more of the inner life, ever more self-reflection and wit. The laws of the story go from mythic, to human, to pure chaos. The drama is all blood: Dad kills daughter (for luck in war!); and mom kills dad in revenge (and because both have new lovers); the children kill mom in revenge for dad; and Orestes, who performed the matricide, has a howling, bedridden, breakdown. Elektra tells Orestes, in the second play, that no degradation could be worse than to live in a house with killers. In the third play they discover something worse: being killers. It all ends in an orgy of violence, madness, a sudden god and two marriages. Readers will find stunning expressions of the pain that grown children feel after bad parental separations and neglect. The various characters' impressions of events is psychologically enthralling, and the poetry is sublime.Carson is one of the great poets writing today and is an equally compelling translator. Her language here is clear and comfortable and the volume can be read fast, like a novel, for a weird and thrilling ride. Read it slowly and you will find grace everywhere. When Helen of Troy explains how some widows of soldiers are angry with her and Elektra says, No kidding. The great Greek playwrights may still be ancient, but the play is triumphantly fresh—and bloodier than a vampire novel. Totally great resource for fashinistas

I was really hoping I would hate this or at least find it to be mediocre, because my book budget has long been exceeded this fall. However, despite how hard I tried to find reasons why this could get sent back for a refund, I just COULD NOT part with it. I love it, it is exactly the kind of resource for a person who wants to do fashion design. I am a beginner; lots of ideas but not sure how to match to fabric characteristics. The book has great detail, great pics, and is a dream-stimulator extraordinaire!

Wow, what a great book. Anyone getting into fashion and sewing will love this book. Extremely detailed. I didn't know there were so many fabrics to choose from. It talks about the positives and negatives of various fabrics. It is a great help for someone like me. I'm getting back into sewing and fashion. It helps me zero in on good quality fabrics to focus on and which ones are easier to work with. I highly recommend it for young designers, fashion inspiration, sewing projects.

Great Resource for Designers and Especially for Those Who are using Green Fabrics

I am a new designer and have been looking for a book that not only describes the myriad of fabric choices one could use but also takes into consideration the impact that producing these fabrics have on the planet...this book is a fabulous reference not only for newbies to the industry..but even for experienced designers who are interested in True Green processes and fabrics...Gail Baugh not only writes with an intuitive style for the designer (answering questions that i had not even thought of asking) but also cuts through all the "merchandising hype" on green and really explains how to intelligently choose fabric manufactures who practice true sustainability. It is hard to find a better book out there that discusses the fundamentals of design and the impact that fabric choices have on the resulting garment as well on the planet that we all live on!! A must read for all designers, especially if you plan on incorporating "Green fabric design" into your line!

This book has no clear direction and too little detail too be of any use. I am in the oil & gas business, but am not an engineer and hoped this book would give me some insights, it didn't. Would not recommend it to anyone.
