Stupid, Boring, Underdeveloped (Not developed more like it)

First, I don't like a book to have the exact same cover as another book by another writer. That was the first thing I didn't like about this book. The book was $0.00, which may have not been a waste of money, it was; however, such a waste of time. Glad I didn't pay for this book. It took less than an hour to read the book, it is only 28 pages long and I was disappointed in the book and the story line.

In the book description "a seriously hot and provocative thriller". There was nothing "hot" about this book and so far from provocative it is ridiculous. It wasn't exciting in any form. In fact, it was quite boring. This book was underdeveloped and left so many questions. The book jumped all over and it was almost like an outline that never was completed into an actual book. Also in the description "very hot and explicit descriptions of romantic activity and submissive training". Not really. There is nothing in this book like that. The scenes are generalized and do not have explicit descriptions of any sort. You are not missing anything.

It starts out with Maggie in bed with a guy named Conner. The description says "pediatric nurse floats from man to man taking no more than the physical release she needs". Well, there was only the guy in the beginning and then Thomas. Where are all these other guys? Also, if there are all these guys, let's assume, in the past, what causes Maggie to not be able to commit and bounce from guy to guy? It can't be from the murder of her parents when she was an infant. What has caused these insecurities and trust issues? Her parents were killed and she was raised by an aunt. That's all you get from her past.

Next, Maggie is in a bar, dressed as a prostitute waiting for Thomas and, of course, she gets treated like a prostitute and almost gets kicked out for trying to pick up Thomas. She doesn't and now Thomas is envisioning her naked. It was ridiculous and really stupid. She ends up with a splinter in her thigh and they have to go to the bathroom so Thomas can dig it out and they kiss and have sex against the wall.

When I say next, I literally mean next sentence. Nothing in between. Just one scene to the next. I think there was like 5 short, undescriptive scenes, maybe 6.

Then it jumps ahead two days. Oh wow, 2 days and now he is obsessed with her and she shows up at his office. She tells him that the incident in the bathroom was a one-time thing, so you are now assuming that nothing happened between them in the two days. But now she is crying and he is holding her and Maggie "…felt safe, at home" in his arms. Seriously, when was she in danger. And this wall that was erected around her heart, what caused it and how did one kiss and sex in the bar bathroom get her to tear these walls down and open up to Thomas? One minute it is a one-time thing and next she is "at home". Thomas kisses her again and we move right into him getting all his best researchers and investigators to look into a 30 year old cold case of the murder of Maggie's parents, in which he has always been obsessed and the reason why he became the person he is. How did that happened? Just because he was babysat by the mom he has been obsessed with the murder since he was 8 years old. Come on. Why the obsession?

So, Maggie and Thomas have had sex in a bar bathroom and kissed in his office, now "all he could think about was her soft skin, receptive and plump mouth and how they fit together perfectly. And it wasn't just her softly rounded body that held his attention. She made him laugh, brought him back down to earth and managed to make even the most mundane activities exciting." Didn't read anything that could even remotely describe that. The book went from a 2nd kiss on the couch to that. Have they been working together in the investigation or has Maggie been hanging out at the local motel waiting on Thomas. She was so determined at the beginning of the book to find answers and that is what caused her to leave Conner, yet she is not doing any investigation on her own. Just letting Thomas do all the work and pay for it, I might add. Have they been sleeping together? Is this day three or maybe a week has passed? What makes it so that he is now grounded and Maggie makes "even the most mundane activities exciting."

From there we move right into kiss #3, back in the office. Maggie shows up and asks if he wants to go to the lunch and moves right to her "nipping and sucking his lower lip". From the door to kissing and Maggie trying to seduce Thomas in 2 sentences, what happened in between. Again, we move to Thomas going to visit his brother in prison because he is linked to this unsolved murder. All these years, Thomas has always had his "suspicions" of his brother being involved but now that "his girlfriend" wants to investigate, he is going to interrogate his brother and out of the goodness of his brother's heart, his brother confesses and implicates two others in the murder. Right…. That is so realistic. Especially since, one, it has been 30 years and he is already in prison for some unknown reason and, two, just before the visit, his brother called him and told him to back off the investigation. Yeah, I can totally see his brother confessing.

So after Thomas goes and sees his brother, he is back in the bedroom with Maggie and she has "missed him". During sex encounter #2, Thomas brands her "You will always be mine" and then she tells him she loves him. The next sentence is her having a temper tantrum because Thomas is not going to go after who murdered her parents. So, he has been obsessed with this case for 30 years and now obsessed with Maggie and he is not going to go after the murderers. In addition, what happened between the "I love you" and screaming match. He was all torn up about the fact that his brother was involved. What happened? He have an orgasm and blurt it out without thinking. What exactly happened that caused him to tell her that he was not going to go after them and that his brother was involved?

So they have this big fight and she leaves. The End. That's it, the whole book. Save yourself an hour and use that saved hour to read something with more depth and development. I will not be paying for the next book. Why would I pay $1.99 for another book that is only 20 pages long. I wouldn't even pay the $2.99 for the complete series of only 74 pages.

At long last, Botswana on the world's platter!

This is a very colorful book for the coffee table or for trying southern African culinary. The beautiful pictures and concise recipe texts take the reader around in Mma Ramotswe's style. The book captures the movements of the traditionally-built Mma Ramotswe in a graceful manner. For me, a Motswana living abroad, it triggers the nostalgia of the happiness that cooking is meant to bring to our daily lives. The only little snag for cooks using the metric system is the need to convert to imperial measures.

For fans of Mma Ramotswe, a delicious read

Devotees of the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency will eat this up. The photography of Botswana's people, places, and foods is lush, and the writing is even better. Stuart Brown's lively text merges seamlessly with quotes from McCall Smith's books. As for the recipes, they're not really the main point here, but all are clearly presented and many are inviting. And if you ever need to know how to roast a haunch of springbok, here you go!

Botswana in your kitchen

A really delightful book with interesting tidbits of information about Botswana as well as truly useful, tasty, and easy to make recipes. Nice photos, too. I made the Car-Patchy-Oww! meat dish and it was good. If I can cook something from this book, ANYBODY can do it! The fans of Alexander McCall-Smith and Mma. Ramotswe will really like this book. It is a wonderful addition to the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency library!

Familiar Territory

Love of Life is a collection of short stories published by Jack London in 1907. These eight stories are all set in Alaska or the Yukon Territory, with the exception of one set in northern California which also touches on the subject of the Klondike gold rush. Though overall not his best work, the collection contains a few exceptional pieces that elevate it above the mediocre.

Three stories stand out here as a cut above the rest. In "Negore, the Coward," a tribe of indigenous Alaskans flees a troop of pursuing Russian conquerors. In order to win the heart of the woman he loves, the titular character must redeem his tarnished reputation by bravely ensnaring the oppressors. In "The Sun Dog Trail," London's recurring character Sitka Charley, a Native trail guide for hire, recalls how he led a mysterious rich woman back and forth across the frozen North on a grueling, epic manhunt. "The Unexpected" tells of a brutal act of violence in a remote cabin. The survivors are left to figure out what to do with the perpetrator. When so far removed from civilization, do conventional notions of law and justice still have any meaning?

At the beginning of his career, London published four great collections of Klondike stories: The Son of the Wolf, The God of His Fathers, Children of the Frost, and The Faith of Men. Love of Life came out a few years later, and although it includes a few gems, overall these later stories are inferior to those earlier works, and often feel like rehashes of subjects already covered by London. "Brown Wolf," for example, covers ground previously trod by the novel White Fang. The north woods soap opera of "A Day's Lodging" is reminiscent of earlier tales of marital discontent like "The Priestly Prerogative" and "The Great Interrogation." And with "The White Man's Way," London has examined one too many times the Indian's perspective on those silly White men and their confusing laws. The story "Love of Life," though a rather well-written and suspenseful offering, amounts to little more than a preliminary attempt at the intense man vs. nature struggle that London would capture far more successfully a year later in his classic tale "To Build a Fire," only in this take the hero faces starvation rather than death by freezing. Of course, if you are approaching London's stories for the first time and have never read those other works, then Love of Life would most likely prove to be a thoroughly enjoyable read. Those who read a lot of London, however, will find that, judging by the standards of the master's work as a whole, Love of Life is a satisfying collection of stories, but not one of his best books overall.

About the Author

Alain Briot is one of today's leading contemporary landscape photographers. Originally from Paris, France, he attended the Academie Nationale des Beaux Arts where he studied drawing and oil painting from 1977 to 1980. Briot then began his study of photography at the American Center in Paris. After visiting the American Southwest, Briot became enthralled with the artistic potential this landscape afforded and in 1986 he relocated to the U.S. He began his study of photography at Northern Arizona University, earning his Bachelor's Degree in 1990 and his Master's Degree in Visual Communication in 1992.From 1995 to 2002, Briot lived at Canyon de Chelly, Arizona, in the heart of the Navajo Nation. Living there allowed him to become intimately familiar with Native American arts and culture, which is evident in the frames and matting designs he uses. Briot's goal is to create the most exciting and beautiful photographs possible. His equipment—be it cameras, software, etc.—is chosen for the ability to make this possible.Alain Briot is a columnist on the highly respected Luminous Landscape website, and is a popular teacher of photography workshops. Okay if if you shoot images similar to the author

This is not a bad book if you're into shooting photographs similar to the author and you want to join the circuit of galleries you see in places such as Sedona, AZ... The author actually gives a lot of good advice.

The book is pretty well made for that audience.

The catch though, is that it's not really about the real market of contemporary art photography. You will not find here references to Paris Photo, nor references to photographers who are in contempory art museums.

But, once you know this is strictly about the type of photography similar to the author's, and if it's your thing, this might be a good fit.

Excellent - Clear, Concise, Informative for Fine Art Photography

After waiting several months for the release of this book, I was pleasantly surprised how readable, clear, concise and justified the approach was. The author clearly differentiates between fine art photography and other forms (ie, stock photography for example). If you are searching for ways to monetize your hobby...this is probably NOT the book for you. On the other hand, if you are searching for tried and true methods of turning a "hobby" into a full-time artistic pursuit while creating a stream of income from your fine art...this IS the book for you.

The author takes the time to provide a strong foundation for fine art photography as compared to other forms - something the reader would be well advised to examine in brutal honesty. Does your photography really qualify as fine art? If not, can it or should you keep moving to find your own niche? From that foundation the author goes on to explore all of the nuts and bolts of selling, marketing, showing and networking including mention of recent technology ranging from payments to social media marketing. There is a superb balance between tried and tested methods and new approaches with an emphasis on realistic steps designed to help you begin at the basics and grow from there.

Exceptionally clear, very readable. Highly targeted and delivers exactly what is promised.

The most complete book I have ever seen on the subject of building a small photography business based on Fine Art sales. Straight forward with no bs. What a great team Alain and Natalie have made. This book, along with their heart for the genuine art of fine photography, gives new businesses, and artists, hope for future success. Bravo. Beautiful.

Concise, but awkward voice

Quite the thin handbook, should not be priced as high as it is (but you know, school texts). Mostly put in lists/steps/bullet-points, along with plenty of visuals, making things easy to understand. I personally do not enjoy the style of writing. It is extremely informal and takes the stance of a professor almost looking down their nose at their students (the reader). Some bits may be humorous, but for the most part the funny bits are a "miss" and instead come off as a little condescending.

Poor explanations hidden behind Dad jokes

Our chemistry department decided to require this book so that they wouldn't have to write the minutiae of all the procedures in the lab manual. Instead, they just reference the associated procedure in the manual.
But the lab instructors still have to cover the minutiae of the procedures because Zubrick causes more confusion that he does clarity. After attempting to do something the way he describes it, I discover there is a much easier way to do it.
On top of this, Zubrick spends more time trying to be funny so that students will think he's their friend, than he does adequately explaining the procedures for a technique.
So, if this book is required for your course, do yourself a favor and find a used copy of a previous edition. If enough people stop buying the new editions, maybe they will stop publishing this title.

Extremely useful and engaging

I am a student at Purdue University, this book was required for my CHM 25501 and it is honestly the most helpful book ever! Each week there were assigned chapters pertaining to the lab techniques required for the lab. The writing style is not like most text books, it's more playful. It has everything you could possibly need to know for an Organic Chemistry lab. I rented this book for the semester but I plan on buying it because I definitely think I'll be referencing it further down the road.

About the Author
Dr. Scott Besley, Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Finance, earned his DBA and MBA degrees from Florida State University. A well-respected author and instructor, Dr. Besley has published numerous research articles in various academic journals and has co-authored two of the leading textbooks in corporate finance that are used at universities around the world. His research interests include areas of corporate finance, working capital management, governance, and investment anomalies. Dr. Besley is also a frequently requested presenter at professional conferences and is actively involved in numerous finance and professional organizations. When he is not teaching or pursuing research interests, Dr. Besley is heavily involved in his local community.

Dr. Eugene F. Brigham is Graduate Research Professor Emeritus at the University of Florida, where he has taught since 1971. Dr. Brigham received his M.B.A. and Ph.D. from the University of California-Berkeley and his undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina. Prior to joining the University of Florida, Dr. Brigham held teaching positions at the University of Connecticut, the University of Wisconsin, and the University of California-Los Angeles. Dr. Brigham has served as president of the Financial Management Association and has written many journal articles on the cost of capital, capital structure, and other aspects of financial management. He has authored or co-authored ten textbooks on managerial finance and managerial economics that are used at more than 1,000 universities in the United States and have been translated into 11 languages worldwide. He has testified as an expert witness in numerous electric, gas, and telephone rate cases at both federal and state levels. He has served as a consultant to many corporations and government agencies, including the Federal Reserve Board, the Federal Home Loan Bank Board, the U.S. Office of Telecommunications Policy, and the RAND Corporation. Dr. Brigham continues to teach, consult, and complete research in addition to his academic writing. He spends his spare time on the golf course, enjoying time with his family and dogs, and tackling outdoor adventure activities, such as biking through Alaska.

Comprehensive and creative, theory and practice

This book is a good introduction to the use of creative writing techniques for people who want to better understand what they bring to their work and what is going on in work situations, but it is also useful for people who are already engaged in reflective practice. The book provides clear and focused discussions of the theoretical context for this approach including the values that inform it as well why specific things like metaphor and narrative play important roles in reflection. Importantly, the book offers specific exercises that put theory into practice and writing samples from people who have used the technique. The book differentiates between writing for professional development and writing for therapeutic or personal reasons and pays attention to the social and ethical dimensions of this kind of effort. I have used Dr. Bolton's approach for my own reflective practice and in educational settings. It opens up understanding and insight in ways that more analytical (20-question) approaches cannot. Highly recommended.

Reflective Practice is an excellent guide on how to employ reflexivity in academic and creative writing. The author offers prescriptive approaches to how to broaden perspective of the emerging creative writer through journaling, narrative storytelling and academic writing. Many practical exercises are outlined to practice expressive writing. I have read several books about auto-ethnography in practice and this is a great complement to any writer's library.

This book could use better editing

I am no expert on Dracula but my historical sensibilities have been offended by several serious errors in the text. Here are just two examples: on pages 9-10 Mr. Trow writes:
"...Oliver Cromwell, whose head ... may or may not have been separated from his body..."
It is a well-known fact that Cromwell's head definitely had been separated from his body, and found its lonely grave only in 1960.
On page 123 we find the following fragment about Jan Zizka:
"...he had fought for the Teutonic Order against the Poles...
Losing an eye at Tannenberg in 1410 fighting for Wenceslas..."
These two incomplete sentences contain four mistakes. First, Zizka fought FOR the Poles AGAINST the Teutonic Order. Second, he did so at the battle of Tannenberg in 1410, therefore he couldn't fight there for Wenceslas. Third, the unnamed battle from the first sentence and the battle of Tannenberg/Grunwald are one and the same event. Fourth, Zizka lost an eye in his adolescence.
In short, this book could really benefit from knowledgeable editing.

Vampirism and the Real Dracula

Although the book has several chapters about vampirism and Bram Stoker's Dracula, the remaining chapters about Vlad Tepes are very detailed and a good read. Vlad surely was one of the most cruel tyrants ever and his atrocities are described with much detail. Contemporaries wrote about the "untold abuses, sad murders and mutilations by the cruel tyrant Dracula" and the author discusses the sources and their reliability by their level of interest in blackening Vlad. According to Trow, many of Vlad Dracula's acts can be interpreted as efforts to enforce his own moral code upon his country and to strengthen and modernise the central government at the expense of the nobility, because they had repeatedly undermined the power of the Wallachia's rulers (and buried alive his elder brother).

An interesting section describes the `usual' way of impalement and the most likely way used by Vlad in the case of mass impalements or when a mother was impaled together with her baby.
