About the Author

Gert Jonkers & Jop van Bennekom (Amsterdam) are the creators and editors of men's menswear and lifestyle magazine Fantastic Man. Jonkers and Van Bennekom met each other in 1997 working on Blvd, a sophisticated Dutch cultural and lifestyle magazine. The pair collaborated on a gay culture magazine, Butt, in 2001, which had immediate impact. The two then turned to Fantastic Man and continued their success with The Gentlewoman and a magazine for the fashion brand COS.

Thick and hard

This magazine always bothered me, the size, the ads, the price... Phaidon did a great job with this book, I like it way better than the magazines. A bit pricey, but the book is way thicker and more impressive than I'd expected.

Amazing Writer!

I bought this book last year, and I read it for fun. This year I'm taking CCJS 375, and our final paper must be based on a book that discusses gangs. I'm excited to use this book because it is inspirational. As a feminist, I was thrilled to see Latina activists included in a book that would usually be appealing to men. I'm definitely looking forward to any other books written by Cesar Cruz.

The Macho Paradox Why Some Men Hurt Women and How All Men Can Help

Katz is cofounder of the Mentors in Violence Prevention Program (MVP), and his focus is on prevention—his intended audience is not violent men who need help changing their ways, but all men, who, he says, have a role to play in preventing male violence against women. His basic assertion is that rape, battering, sexual abuse and harassment are so widespread that they must be viewed as a social problem rooted in our culture, not as the problem of troubled individuals. He urges men to directly confront the misogynistic attitudes and behavior of their peers. Some men may find Katz's advice occasionally baffling: he is full of directions about what not to do (such as paternalistic actions that deprive women of their autonomy). He wants to bring men into the larger discussion of pornography (which, he points out, has been dominated by women) and get them to look at its impact on themselves. Katz also presents eye-opening exercises and discussions from the MVP model that engender productive discussion among participants—usually high school or college students. If only men would read Katz's book, it could serve as a potent form of male consciousness-raising.

Arguing for a "far-reaching cultural revolution," Katz explores those aspects of American culture that promote violence against women, focusing separate chapters on pornography, prostitution, and other sex-related businesses as well as sexual violence in the military, the music industry, and athletics. He catalogs the troubling statistics regarding domestic violence, sexual harassment, and other acts of violence and hostility by men against women, but he is most powerful when detailing encounters with men and women speaking about their personal experiences. Based on his work with gender violence, the book also offers advice on how men can ally with women to curb violence and change those aspects of the "boys will be boys" attitude on male aggressiveness and masculinity that can lead to violence and abuse. About the Author
Jackson Katz is internationally recognized for his groundbreaking work in gender violence prevention with men and boys, particularly in the sports culture and the military. He is cofounder of the Mentors in Violence Prevention (MVP) program at Northeastern University's Center for the Study of Sports in Society. MVP is most widely used in college athletics, and is also used by both the 2005 Super Bowl champion New England Patriots and the 2004 World Series champion Boston Red Sox. Katz also directs the first worldwide gender violence prevention program in the history of the United States Marine Corps. His award-winning educational video Tough Guide, his featured appearance in the films Wrestling with Manhood and Spin the Bottle, and his nationwide lectures have brought his insights into masculinity and gender violence to millions of college and high school students. Since 1990, he has lectured at over nine hundred colleges, prep schools, high schools, middle schools, professional conferences, and military institutions in forty-three states. From a pro firefighter, "Men should read this book!"

As a male and professional firefighter working in a hyper masculine and sexist environment I found this book to be incredibly enlightening and encouraging as I work to embrace a healthier definition of masculinity and to fight the negative influences associated with my workplace and in broader culture as I build a better me. This book sparked immense interest in and better understanding of gender and violence issues to which I was mostly blind before. It led me to purchase and read Men Speak Out by Tarrant, A Call To Action by Jimmy Carter, and so much more material as I aimed to educate myself and realign my perspectives and behaviors. I gained valuable insight and perspective into the world of the women in my life. I have now embarked on a mission to do my part through self evaluation and peer education to fight sexism and be sure I am no longer part of the problems of our culture. I think especially for guys who align themselves with stereotypical definitions of masculinity, who are interested in being real men and creating a stronger and healthier self, and who want to work to build a better world for the women (mothers, sisters, wives, daughters, etc.) and men (fathers, brothers, sons, husbands) they love, this book is a must read. I purchased the book on kindle, liked it so much and felt it was so important to my own transformation and endeavors I bought a hard copy so that I can loan it to the important men in my life.

Book talks about why some men have the need to dominate and at times injure women. Book very informative about strives to assist in working with men to help redirect aggressive or hostile behavior. I would recommend this book for professional women, battered women, and definitely for men to read.

Noam Chomsky is Institute Professor in the Department of Linguistics and Philosophy at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Boston. One can see in Chomsky's insights on the development of Reaganism parallels to the rise of Trump - both seen as political outsiders, both proposing scary ideas & both coming across as populists who care about "real workers." Another great point in the book was observing how other pols & media labeled Nixon as corrupt due to Watergate, but not regarding similar break-ins engineered by his Administration under COINTELLPRO. In this way, the problem was shifted to one of Nixon's failure, avoiding any systemic criticisms. Similarly, Nixon was faulted not so much for the mass killings in Vietnam & Laos, but more for not briefing Congress.

Kindergarten-Grade 2-Fister Farnello loves dirt. One day he escapes his bath and runs into the woods where he meets a giant named Dirt Man, and the two become instant friends. They spend days playing until Fister becomes so filthy that even his own mother does not recognize him. Even the birds and mice that have taken up residence in his hair begin to complain. When moss appears in his bellybutton and a thick green cloud of stink comes out of his mouth instead of words, Dirt Boy can't take it anymore. He runs through the woods and back to his house. At first, his mother thinks he is a monster, but when she sprays him with a hose, "the faint shape of a certain long-lost boy" is revealed. "It took twenty-three bars of soap, sixteen bottles of shampoo, one hundred and seventy-nine gallons of bathwater, forty-four million bubbles, and eleven tubes of toothpaste to finally get Fister Farnello clean." This is a witty fantasy about a topic with which children are quite familiar. The bright, bold watercolor-and-gouache illustrations in various shades of green and brown capture the essence of filth. In addition, Manders used "acrylic paint, crackle medium, modeling paste, colored pencils, sponges, fingers, and old toothbrushes" to create Dirt Boy. Wacky depictions of filthy Fister and the giant will amuse children. An engaging tale appropriate for reading aloud.

The squishy delight of wallowing in mud and mess is the elemental appeal for young preschoolers in this mucky picture book. Fister escapes authority, his "clean-and-mean mother" who tries to force him into the bath. He runs away to the woods, where he finds a home in the bellybutton of a giant, who hasn't taken a bath in a thousand years. They play dirt games. When birds nest in Fister's hair and mice snuggle on his body, he begins to feel icky and slimy, and when the giant begins to use the word delicious, Fister runs home to mother, who scrubs and scrubs him deliciously clean. The pictures--in watercolor and gouache--glory in the dirt. There are close-ups of the giant's teeth covered in green gunk, of mushrooms sprouting from the boy's toes, and of Fister's stinky breath blowing out in a thick, green cloud. The story stays true to the slapstick fun of getting dirty, even as it admits to the coziness and comfort of being clean. Hazel Rochman
