Perfect gift for those who love fairies

I gave this Fairy Catching Kit to an 8 year old little girl for Christmas -- she really loves fairies. Her Mom said she has not stopped playing with it since she received it! What's especially so cute -- is the tiny cage!! Even her (almost) 50 year old Aunt said she would like one for her birthday...so it seems like it's the perfect gift for fairy lovers of ALL ages!

Caution: Not for use on larger fey folk

I've always been interested in capturing fairies, so I got this kit to start my new collection.

Unfortunately, the glitter provided with the kit doesn't come with a warning about what can happen if you use too much. It's a potent fairy lure, irresistible to nearly all fey folk. On my very first fairy-catching attempt, I used too much of the fairy lure, and ended up catching a bit more than I had intended.

I had barely set the trap before it caught the attention of a wandering efreet. Needless to say, the tiny cage that's included in the kit was little match for an angry eleven-foot-tall supernatural being of raging fire, and it was not one bit amused by my attempts to subdue it. It did eventually go away, but not before burning down my neighbor's house. (I cooked my neighbor a very nice country ham to apologize.)

As long as you follow the instructions carefully and you are conservative in your use of the fairy glitter, you will find this a fun and entertaining gift that can lead to an entire new hobby

A perfect little something for the fairy enthusiast

My seven-year-old daughter has loved fairies ever since she was a toddler, and over the years her interest has only grown stronger. We have all of the Flower Fairy books and the Fairyopolis series, as well as many other fairy-themed books, DVDs, and kits. We've even built fairy houses. Well, a trip to the local used bookstore today proved fruitful when my daughter spied this Fairy Catching Kit. I had a coupon and bought it for her. It really is a cute little kit that claims to be 'the best fairy catching system since 1806!'

The kit comes with a fairy observation guide (which my seven-year-old read out loud to me during a car trip). The book is laid out in short chapters with beautiful color illustrations of fairies (and the fairies are culturally diverse too!):

What a Surprise!

I am the author's granddaughter and was so touched to read the delightful reviews and memories of what was of one of my favorites also. I will research the inspiration for "Smiling Hill Farm" to see if I can locate the farm it was based on. I do know that my grandmother's "pioneer" books were based on her own childhood as well as research. And I thought I was one of the only people left who enjoyed her gentle, charming views of a life so many of us wished we had lived. Thank you for sharing your comments and memories!

Wonderful History for Children of all ages

This is an engrossing, charming, authentic piece of Americana. I could not put it down. This is not a multi-cultural story - it is about the settling of southern Indiana by white pioneers and it is about how families worked together to survive and prosper. After (or before) you read this you should visit Spring Mill State Park outside of Mitchell, Indiana.

Very Disappointing and Kinda Sleezy

First off, I doubt it's a coincidence that the first two reviews are 5 stars and the people that gave them have only 1 review (as of this writing). Smells like the author hit up a couple friends to leave glowing reviews. To me they are way off the mark.

It's clear these authors had no idea who their target audience was going to be. They write about an advanced 4-legged option strategy but waste 20 pages on what options are and how they work. Then throughout the book they add such deep insights as the chart of time decay and how it occurs faster at the end and how you should use limit orders set midway between bid and ask instead of market orders as a way to get a better return on your trades. Who are they writing to, neophytes or experienced options traders investigating advanced strategies?

Take off the first "intro to options" chapter, a review chapter at the end which is totally unnecessary, and the glossary you've got 160 pages. Then take out the few pages at the end of each chapter for the self-tests (which, big surprise here, you have to go to a Web site that's selling something to get the answers) and you've got less than 150 pages to deliver everything the book promises to deliver.

A lot of what remains is poorly written and poorly edited (Chapter 6 is 2 pages long). Absolutely no discussion of any of the greeks anywhere. I would have given it two stars because they did address AM settlement and rolling but making you go to a sales-oriented Web site to get self-test answers is incredibly sleezy.

Perhaps that was the whole point to begin with. While reading the book I got the impression that it was an afterthought - a sense of "we gotta come up with something" type of effort. Maybe the whole idea of the book was not to come up with a book on iron condors but a vehicle to get people to their Web site to try and get them to buy things.

Good, but could have been better

This limited area of option trading is justified in having its own book, and this one is a decent start.

It has these strong points: clear explanations, good charts, good explanation of managing iron condors both when they go well and when they go bad; good discussion of stops, and a short description of 2 similar strategies. It convincingly shows why the strategy is best for indices and not individual stocks. There were some valuable insights that were original to me- most importantly the value in diversifying to non-correlated products not only to reduce the risk of adverse moves, but to spread the reserve needed.

It had weaknesses. First, with current book indexing software, I can't understand why it did not contain an index. Second, I feel that a discussion of volatility skews is essential in discussing option pricing and strategies, but this was never mentioned. Third, there were only a few words on using iron condors with futures options. This is an important topic for option diversification, margin, and hedging possibilities.

Interestingly, there was no discussion of greeks. I did not find this a problem, but a longer book needs to at least reference them.

The book did spell out an iron condor trading system, but it was too vague. Instead of "with high volatility" it would have been helpful to say "When the Implied Volatility is above X" and be more specific about entries and exits.

It did show the authors' results of trading over the years 2006- 2009, but the actual system was not described in sufficient detail. A monthly performance would have been an improvement and a more detailed performance summary. (By the way, there are references to the authors website, but I found them limited and appropriate, unlike a few recent trading books that are just website promotions).

From a personal perspective, I would have liked to have seen a comparison with advantages and disadvantages of iron condors to naked put selling. I note one of the authors has also written a book called Naked Puts, so a comparison would have been natural.

Finally, a word of caution to those thinking of starting to trade iron condors. The authors have a website that tracks their performance since 2009. (It also tries to get paying subscribers). The website is quite poor in describing the strategy and trades, but from my reading, it shows that it has traded 3 iron condor systems. One (Meridian) did so poorly it has stopped trading, and the other 2 (Chromium and Optium) came close to being wiped out this April. (It looks to me that the systems are too focused on the stock indicies and would be better to diversify into commodities). Interestingly, their Double Diagonal System (Quantium) shows a slow and steady return. Maybe that will be their next book (smiling).

The poor recent results of a particular iron condor system do not negate the value of the book, and the insights it gave me. That is why, overall, I would give it 4 stars.

No. Just no.

The idea behind this book is fabulous, I have to say. It's very Bridget Jones in that way, and I could tell that the author was trying really hard to achieve a "romantic comedy" type of storyline. Honestly, there were a few places where I found myself laughing, or even caught myself smiling, and the last two chapters completely saved this book from a very low one star rating. Okay, so I liked the premise, and I loved the ending, but why am I still rating it so low?

First of all, this book is riddled with errors that could easily have been caught in another read-through, and the author really skimped on comma use, which at best was annoying and at worst, was confusing. I was also thrown off by the frequency with which the female characters called each other "bitch" and "bitches" just for fun. Personally, if one of my friends spoke to me like that, I'm not sure we'd be friends much longer, and this also took away from the context when a character really was called a bitch in an angry manner. But that I could maybe have lived with, rationalizing that some groups of women really do speak to each other like that, and reminding myself as a writer that I have found errors in my own work on occasion.

But then it gets worse. I'm not sure there were any places in this book where a character simply "said" something. Instead, most dialogue is actually assumed to be very emphatic and with high volume, as the author has frequently written that the dialogue was "shouted." Combine the frequent shouting with the bitch-calling, and I'm not really sure why any of these characters were thrown together; they are all argumentative and very combative/reactional, and it seems very rare for any of them to authentically like each other. I found it unpleasant and unrealistic in the extreme, and there were several places where I almost decided to simply not finish the book.

It was a train wreck ... I didn't like most of it, but I just couldn't look away. There was WAY too much unbelievable drama, and the "heroine" is a ridiculous klutz (with probably a severe anxiety disorder), who alternates between over-reacting to the smallest things and whining about EVERYTHING throughout the course of the book. When she's not over-reacting or whining, she's thinking mean thoughts in her head about everything and everyone around her, and I found her very annoying. But getting back to the melodrama, let me just put it this way - during the course of the book, poor "heroine" Poppy endured all of this, and these are only the things I can still remember:

* leftover heartache from a bad breakup
* numerous encounters with the ex from said breakup
* nearly choking to death on bread in a restaurant, where NO ONE even thought to attempt the Heimlich Maneuver
* an arrest due to some drunken misconduct
* stealing from a mail truck
* a mugging
* a head injury, during which her forehead is embedded with shattered glass
* a broken/lost friendship due to above mentioned scheming
* a fall, during which her ankle is possibly broken but never checked out officially
* she glues a broken vase to her hands while scheming to spoil a real estate purchase
* a party gone bad lands her in the hands of a coke-snorting would-be rapist
* a friend rescues her from would-be rapist, only be shot immediately afterward in a gas station robbery

And all of this is interspersed with numerous physical fighting encounters, including a very angry, possibly homeless man in a bakery, and a generous splash of paint thrown by an animal-rights activist.

Not to mention, our "heroine" and her love interest? They pretty much do nothing but hate on each other through the entire book, only getting along for short periods of time during which the reader is supposed to believe that some great love has developed. Um, no.

I hate to be so harsh, but this book simply didn't click for me.

Wonderful Book, fun read

I won this book on a giveaway. I am so glad that I did! It is my first British read. I have never laughed so much reading a book. I fell in love with Poppy! I really am hoping that the author writes a sequel to this one!

When Poppy and best friend Jazz decide to swap lives. What follows is an epic story filled with a dizzy calamity of mishaps.

What was such a shame about this book is that in my copy it had sentences missing from the story, so it jumps a lot and you have to work out what is happening. The book is not badly written it is written in an entertaining and lively way, and I did read the book the whole way through. I just found the leading character not that likeable, she is very shallow and there are too much stereotyping of people which some readers may not like. The leading character does not hold back and at some times is quite crude. But at the end of the day she is just a character, and there are people like this in the world, so why shouldn’t an author use this type of person as a character in the book? So that is what I was thinking when I was reading the story, but for me personally I like to connect with the characters and like the leading one, which sadly just did not happen for me with this book.
