YA-- An excellent choice to supplement life-drawing instruction in the classroom. Technical information on anatomy, proportion, lighting, weight distribution, and foreshortening is discussed. Beyond this, however, Sheppard shows how to render various figure types and how to capture the figure in motion. The use of a variety of media gives the book an added dimension. Two hundred drawings done in a classical style illustrate the points. They are often accompanied by diagrams to explain the underlying form. The text is informative and written in a way that gives the feeling of having an instructor at hand.

An artist of rare talent

Sheppard's work is excellent and his explanations are clear. Much of the same material carries over to his other book on the female figure. One or the other is highly recommended, as are several of his other books.

This is not one of the best figure drawing books

When I review DRAWING books, the first question I ask is, "Is this for BEGINNERS?" Because I feel an obligation to the book buyer to provide good information, and also to prevent a beginning student from being discouraged, and feeling that they are defective, or ....just cannot get it.

It does NOT seem to occur to the buyer that many authors just cannot teach. Instinct seems to suggest that that if book gets published, it must contain credible instruction by someone who knows how to teach. The fact should be recognized that everyone seems to desire to cash in on the Big Bucks market of HOW-TO-DRAW. That this is so may be surprising. Perhaps as many as half of all drawing books are not very good for beginners. I know. I've gotten familiar with most of the books on the market, and I know what I'm looking for in good instruction.

Page 3 addresses the subject of the canon of PROPORTIONS, the ratio of head, limb and torso size to the rest of the body. That's typical of a beginner book. That's okay.

So is "Realistic Figure Drawing" for a BEGINNER? I believe the author, SHEPPARD, is confused; but I've seen this before. Even though Sheppard can boast credentials as an art instructor, we must ask if his book is good instruction.

Chapter Two, "RENDERING FORM IN LIGHT & SHADE". This shows simple SPHERES and CYLINDERS and the shading patterns used in most elementary drawing books.

Throughout the book, Sheppard's final anatomical sketches appear. I troubles me very much when an author uses completed and "advanced" level examples in a drawing book. For one thing, no beginner can copy them nor come close. The other issue is that beginners ought to work at producing rough shapes, such as are represented by the HUMAN PUPPETS, stick figures, block figures, or figures consisting of egg or triangle shapes. These are missing.

"Realistic Figure Drawing" does contain examples of the author's "5-minute rough sketches", but these appear at the end of the book, on pages 107 to 131. That is why I feel so puzzled as to how to rate this book. Either it is or isn't for BEGINNERS, and if the author is unclear about who he is teaching, how can anyone decide if it is worth recommendation? This book does not seem to be a complete system of instruction, so I must give it a lower rating.

The list price of $21.95 seems a bit high.

I found this book very helpful in understanding the human figure. It doesn't cover everything that I would have liked however, but it does cover a great deal of both male and female forms. With highly detailed drawings, practical techniques, and easy to understand text. This book makes an excellent addition to your drawing library.

This book represents a scholarly analysis of music forms that are familiar to many Americans, yet whose origins are not always known. Mr. Loza obviously knows the material on a first-name basis and sets it out in painstaking clarity. Also included are interviews with notable purveyors of popular Latin music (Los Lobos, Poncho Sanchez, Lalo Guerrero, et al). For anyone with more than a passing interest in the richness of Mexican-American music and for lovers of its contemporary forms, this book provides a rich bed of information.

A chapter is devoted to index reduction methods that allow the numerical treatment of general differential-algebraic equations. The analysis and numerical solution of boundary value problems for differential-algebraic equations is presented, including multiple shooting and collocation methods. A survey of current software packages for differential-algebraic equations completes the text. The book is addressed to graduate students and researchers in mathematics, engineering and sciences, as well as practitioners in industry. Review of Differential-Algebraic Equations

This book is used as the basic text in a graduate seminar on
DAE's. So far the participants find this book very useful.
It is highly readable and meets the need of both basic and advanced
study of DAE's covering both theoretical and numerical techniques for
solving DAE's with examples from control problems. There are exercises
to test the readers' knowledge; these exercises are not difficult but very helpful for the understanding of the material.
Compared with other texts this book includes more recent results
in DAE. This book is highly recommended.

This seems one of the most complete and realistic books on DAE but I still miss more applied exerises specialty to those related with chemical engineering, good theory book but could better with more exercises and maybe a cd with exercises in matlab or others softwares

I have been exploring the concepts of flag theory, location independent living, lifestyle design, geopolitical arbitrage etc. recently to firm up
my plans to be a photographer/fine artist, a digital artistic nomad if you will. Digital Nomad offers a great deal of no nonsense advice that is
helping me plan. The ideas of Doug Casey, Rolf Potts, Harry Schultz, and now Dave Brett are all worth exploring.

World-famous for I Am Woman and three other albums that went gold in the 1970s, Reddy was the daughter of hard-working, Australian vaudeville performers. Onstage with her parents since she was four, Reddy was 17 when she started getting her own singing gigs. She married at 19, but her husband was abusive when she became pregnant, so she moved out. Winning a ticket to America in a local singing contest, Reddy soon worked her way to the top of the charts. Unfortunately, her next husbands were also alcoholic and/or abusive, and Reddy struggled to recover financially and emotionally from each. While Reddy's career and husband problems are shared by many women in show business, her paranormal interests are distinctive. Reddy was 11 when she first experienced "astral projection"; later, she had a dream foretelling Robert Kennedy's assassination. Reincarnation, she explains, may involve individuals or groups of people "reincarnating together to resolve unfinished business." Thus, "Elvis was formerly King Tutankhamen," and "Richard Nixon was formerly Andrew Johnson, who was formerly Thomas Paine." Reddy also explains that AIDS is actually one of the long-dormant "biblical plagues." While mainstream Reddy fans may be turned off by the New Age–speak, alternative-reality readers won't bat an eye. Would make a great VH1 Behind The Music

In the time-honored tradition of celebrity memoir, Helen Reddy's The Woman I Am is utterly scannable without worrying itself with soul searching or excessive detail. I nonetheless studied it like it was the Torah. Reddy's story, however, is more interesting than the one presented in this tome: a young, divorced Australian single mother with a pretty voice & dreams of stardom comes to America, becomes first Australian to win a Grammy Award & host an American television show, writes THE anthem of the feminist movement (which is still being sampled & covered -- including an amusing revision as a jingle for a chain of fast food restaurant, I Am Man), privately battles Addison's disease (still not sure what that is), parts company with record label after the hits stop happening, loses an unspecified fortune when her addict husband/manager embezzles her earnings (some $30 million, if you believe Julia Phillips account in You'll Never Eat Lunch In This Town Again), manages to find the will to divorce him AND pay off the debts he'd saddled her with (hear her ROAR!), retires from the showbiz racket and becomes a hynotherapist living off an AFTRA pension. What a ride.

What's the tell-tale sign of a cheap autobiography? No index! So it's not surprising that there is a dearth of detail. Her husbands, for example, are never even referred to by name -- Number One, Number Two, Number Three. (Taking feminism a little far, don't you think?) Reddy goes on ad nauseum (charts and everything!) about her interest in geneology and New Age mysticism, but it is her body of recorded work -- a multiplatinum greatest hits package, for heavens sake! -- for which she will be most remembered, yet she treats it almost in passing, perhaps because her meteoric rise coincided with the deaths of both her parents. Still, I found myself wanting to know what were her recording sessions like? How did it FEEL to be #1. Did she have anxiety about the winning streak coming to an end? (There are a number of hits -- big ones, too -- that don't even get a mention, such as Harriet Schock's Ain't No Way To Treat A Lady). She alludes to jealous, verbally abusive husband Number Two but is short on specifics, except to allege that after their split, people wouldn't hire her for fear he would show up with a shotgun. (So he was violent as well?) How much responsibility for the downward spiral of her career does Reddy herself cop to simply by virtue of being passively acquiescent to her handlers? And after two marriages to abusive men, what was her state of mind when she married her third? (Fat chance of finding out here!) Husband Number Three comes and goes with no description whatsoever. (How did they meet? Where did they marry? What led to divorce?) Poof, he appears, then poof, he's gone. (I think he was a musician in her band in the early 90's -- seem to remember something to that effect the one & only time I ever saw one of her concerts, which was excellent, by the way.) It dawned on me when reading about her early life as a culture shocked single mother first trying to find her footing in America, or later on as a stalwart who outsmarts an unscrupulous concert promoter attempting to stiff her out of her fee, that Reddy has written the basis for a one-woman show.

Great Book!

I read this book in 2 days. I was fasinated! I have waited for 30 years to read about Helen. I have loved her music for 30 years. I was glad to know that she seems to be a loving and warm woman. The best thing she said that she was glad that her children turned out to be good and kind people. They must have learned it somewhere!

As for that unkind review a few up, he obviously didn't read the end of the book. The part where she says , "You are what you think about." and "KINDNESS BEGETS KINDNESS:.

Classy-period. Actually-World Class Helen, World Class

I am so grateful to this generous performer who gave the world so much first rate

crafty sophisticated beautiful music that she made her own - there is no debate that they (She?) broke the mold that she was cast from. Helen earned the first Grammy given to an Australian, that I didn't know until today.As well she had a dozen songs reach the top forty in an era not so long ago when radio dominated the media , and it made you feel good to listen to "pop" music.

High class with no airs, the author did us all a service when she wrote this reflective heartfelt recollection of her experience as an artist in the 20th century, a working mother who held high standards, worked prodigiously , and left the world a legacy- and truly doesnt have an ego to protect, She reveals herself to be vulnerable and insightful all the way. I noticed that like many artists, she doesn't have much to say about the emotional or intellectual stuff of the songs- which is ineffable, personal, and can be felt and understood only by listening to the music itself.

There is much in this book to be appreciated, layers of history, vignettes of another time, in another place.One feels the members of her family peaking through- almost sitting beside this reader.Helen's love of the richness of geneology and history is so kindly revealed, as is her enthusiasm, kindness, compassion, and what I consider leading edge thought. Right on sister!

Perfect for Class Players

The vast majority of chess players are weak--they are the class players, D-B, who consistently suffer crushing losses to those who are much better; namely, most A players, Experts and Masters. To these chess sharks, you who are rated 1200-1800 are just chum; you are a little fish swimming in a school of little fish, with no means to escape. You lose too many games, virtually always due to a tactical failure, and have little hope of breaking out of this pattern of losing. Sure, occasionally you'll draw or even defeat a chess shark rated over 1800, but at the end of the day, you know that you don't do this often enough-- you still fail to bust into the A category when all is said and done.

What do these sharks have that you wimpy fish do not? Well, you heard it before: Tactics, tactics, and more tactics. Capablanca: A Primer of Checkmate, is precisely what can turn little fish into streamlined chess sharks. You--the weak chess player--are weak foremost because your tactics are terrible, it's that simple. Capablanca: A Primer of Checkmate can help transform you from a pathetic class player to an up-and-coming candidate expert, or higher. It can help, if you diligently do your homework.

This excellent book, written with the class player in mind, lucidly extols the right sorts of things that class players need to hear and do to become strong; namely, developing a simple playing style, recognizing basic tactical patterns, and following sound strategic principles.

Capablanca: A Primer of Checkmate has numerous interesting features, all of which combined make for enjoyable reading--the prose is blunt, honest, and unpretentious, and the annotations are simple enough to explain the fundamentals of a position while making relevant points for stronger players.

First, carrying on in the tradition of Renaud and Kahn's classic, The Art of Checkmate, Del Rosario presents a taxonomy of tactics, all of which are the bread and butter of chess sharks everywhere, including the Smothered Mate, Arabian Mate, Anastasia's Mate, and many more, all demonstrated in the games of 'The Chess Machine'. Second, Del Rosario finds a new tactical category not mentioned by Renaud and Kahn; namely, the so-called Capablanca Mate. In doing so, Del Rosario not only adds to the bevy of tactical categories avaliable but also adds a thin historical slice to Capablanca scholarship. Third, Capablanca: A Primer of Checkmate, is a collection of Capablanca games. You know, that legendary World Champion who played simple, long, drawn out, positional games of: 'I'm-gonna-exchange-all-the-pieces-and-pass-a-pawn-and-win-the-endgame.' NEWS FLASH! Capa was a monster tactician as well! The games in this book demonstrate this much neglected fact about Capablanca. (One doesn't beat people such as Lasker, Rubinstein, Marshall, Botvinnik, and Alekhine unless one can spot tactics.) Fourth, Del Rosario further illustrates certain points with examples from other's games, including his own. Did I mention that all the games in the book--Capablanca or otherwise--are tactical shorts? Lastly, and this is particularly pertinent to the class player who loves to collect chess books and jump from studying a chapter of this book, two sections from that book, and a few exercises from that other book. Del Rosario presents a simple list of important books for the class player, with pithy details relevant to becoming stronger. I'll give up part of the ghost: Master at least one introductory, comprehensive chess book, such as Fine's Chess The Easy Way. Do this, and you will be greatly rewarded.

It's a good book in general, although occasionally some comments could have been explained better (but that's what second editions are for). If you are a class player, then this is an excellent book in particular, whether or not you find a note that is somewhat vague--take no heed. Just learn the Capablanca game at hand; afterall, there is a tactical pattern to be learned, and with which you must smite thine opponents!

Capa The 'Mad Attacka'!

As a longtime Capablanca admirer, I find this to be a very appealing work. In one volume I can play through dozens of his games while at the same time learning how he manuevered pieces into optimal attacking positions. And to cap it off, you get a wonderful overview of standard checkmates a la Reynaud and Kahn's 'Art of the Checkmate'. So you learn some great attacking chess, while getting a deeper appreciation for just how strong Capa was tactically. For developing players, learning how a strong master demolishes weaker players can be of more benefit than trying to understand the super-refined play between two top GM's. If you are like me and the vast majority of chess players, your opponents don't play super-refined chess, they play error-filled chess, but you often fail to capitalize on their mistakes. This is a book that will teach you how one of the greatest in history took full advantage of such play. This is an exercise that is sure to help you if you are in that, say, 1100-1600 USCF range. del Rosario is an experienced teacher, and you will get some good basic pointers along the way. A more advanced player will be able to see exceptions to some of del Rosario's principles, but as Korchnoi says, you have to know how to follow these principles before you can understand when they can be broken. For Capa fans, this book is a must, and for any developing player who needs a good game collection, it can be a fine choice. Warmly recommended.

Checkmates and Much More

True to the title, Rosario explains at least 19 checkmate patterns. All are given within the context of an actual game. Almost all of the games are by Capablanca. It is good to see a collection of master level games that end(mostly) in checkmate instead of resignations or draws(the author usually explains the checkmate if one side resigns).
The book also offers some very good opening and tactical education, as well as a bit of entertaining chess lore & coaching insights(this can be a little distracting from the checkmate themes) .
Rosario switches seamlessly from textbook concision to conversational coaching style.
It probably helps to have read"The Art of the Checkmate", since this book follows nearly the same outline. It is an excellent checkmate manual and a very good advanced beginners general training book. As the author intended, it makes a great companion volume to "Capablancas Best Chess Endings" by Irving Chernev, but it stands on its own very well also.
Print quality is good, main moves are printed nice & bold in column format.
The very tight binding and very small inner margins are overlookable because of the 5 star content.
