About the Author
Alex Mintz is Dean of the Lauder School of Government, Diplomacy and Strategy at IDC-Herzliya, Israel. He is editor of the journal Political Psychology, former co-editor of Foreign Policy Analysis and associate editor of the Journal of Conflict Resolution. Mintz was the 2005 recipient of the Distinguished Scholar Award for distinguished contribution to the field from the Foreign Policy Analysis section of the International Studies Association (ISA). He has published, edited, or co-edited nine books and is the author of multiple journal articles.

Karl DeRouen, Jr, is Professor of Political Science, Director of the International Studies Program, and a College of Arts and Science Faculty Fellow (2008-11) at the University of Alabama. His work has appeared in the Journal of Politics, International Organization, the Journal of Peace Research, the Journal of Conflict Resolution, the British Journal of Political Science and a number of other journals.

Great Sleep-Aid

Honestly, right off the bat I never made it through the entire thing. Be warned, that the language in the book is very dense. I'm a political science major in my 4th year with a strong interest in foreign relations and even I found this tough to get through. I gave it 3 stars because while I'm sure the book does have some very good and interesting insights, the highly technical language makes it a very unfriendly read.

Great primer in free market economics - needed understanding for a proper interpretation of today's economy

A Capitalist Manifesto -Understanding the Market Economy and Defending Liberty by Gary Wolfram

In March, I attended a 2 day seminar put on by Hilldale College. One of the three featured speakers was Gary Wolfram. I was unfamiliar with him before the seminar. He was entertaining, articulate and insightful. Economics has never really been an area of interest for me. But since the quality of our lives are so tied to our livelihood, and since more and more of our economy is controlled by the government, I bought this book.
If you do read this book, be prepared to review some of the basic economic lectures you had in college. Demand, supply and pricing are the stuff of economics. At first, I was a bit bored with the book. But as I continued on, Wolfram began to paint a picture of the economy from an historical perspective. He incorporates writings of many of the economic thinkers and philosophers of the past 300 years.
My comments...
In the simplest terms, as we permit government to control more and more of the economy, we reduce incentive for risk taking and capital formation. Even our basic urges for charity become corrupted in a way that we depend on Big Brother to care for the needs of the less fortunate.
There are large disparities in the free market system. There are always rich and poor. But in even case, the poor in free market systems live at a standard far above the poor in centralized economies. In other words, the most good can be achieved by the most people when there are fewer barriers to upward movement.
Book Summary...
Each chapter is written in a short, concise manner and this book is a breeze to read through. There are many perils in the writing as well. I plan to come back to some of the chapters over and over to deepen my understanding of what the heck is happening to me, my money, my government and the economy.
I do recommend this book for those interested in economics, liberty, the Keynsian economic theory, Friedrich Hayek, etc.

Teach by example, clear quick read. This should be required reading for all in Washington DC!

Great book! This is very well written and provides one of clearest explanations of Economic principles in the public sector. Everyone of our leaders in Washington DC and at the state level, should be required to read this! Quick read, with a nice surprise at the end; notes for each chapter! The author clearly knows how to both write and teach. I have recommended this book to the leadership at my company, esp. those in the Finance Treasury Department.

Without directly saying so, Gary Wolfram has completely shredded the Communist Manifesto. To anyone still struggling with the misguided and stale notions embedded in Socialism, this book clears away that debris.
A Capitalist Manifesto is clear, engaging, and compelling in its narrative concerning how people engage in trade, make decisions, and ultimately create their society and the economy that keeps it viable.
The author's style is reflective of his style when lecturing in the classroom: He entertains and humanizes ideas usually considered dry, overly complex, or downright boring. He proceeds in a logical fashion, progressing from basic concepts (with a chapter title that sounds like the lead-in to a bad joke: "Two Economists on a Bus") to more complex notions like Equilibrium and Profit, to consideration of the contrasts between Markets and Socialism, Individual Liberty, and the importance of Freedom to Economic progress. He then provides historical perspective and describes Economic thinking in light of the events of the Twentieth Century.
This book will prove useful to newcomers to the ideas of Economics as well as those who have long studied the subject.
Strongly recommended, and worth every penny!

The student is left with an empty feeling; he or she can certainly answer the questions in the book correctly, but cannot apply the knowledge to real-world circuits and situations.

Other textbooks cover circuits in adequate detail but tend toward moderate to heavy use of mathematics in their analysis of circuits and systems. At an engineering level, this is probably an acceptable treatment. For technicians, the purely mathematical approach fails miserably. It is not that technicians are not capable of grasping the mathematical concepts (they most certainly are, if the concepts are presented properly); it's just that advanced mathematical tools are not in their toolkits. In reality, people do not need advanced math to understand electronic systems. People can learn almost anything if it is presented properly.

This textbook has many features that should make it a valuable addition to any curriculum for electronic technicians:

The level of mathematics has been moderated so that only basic algebra skills are needed to work most of the problems in the text. (The only place where a bare minimum of trigonometry is required is Chapter 16, Fiber-Optic and Laser Technology.) This has been accomplished without sacrificing depth. Each concept is first explained in plain language and then carefully developed step-by-step. Every attempt is made to build on the student's already broad base of experience. Each new concept is supported by at least one example. Examples follow a progression from simple to challenging, always emphasizing fundamental ideas. Real-world examples and case studies are sprinkled throughout the text. Real circuits, systems, and their troubleshooting are emphasized throughout the text, with discussion of necessary safety procedures where needed. A systematic method of troubleshooting is emphasized. One hundred circuit diagrams from the text are included on a CD-ROM, and are made interactive using Electronics Workbench. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

Very Happy

The book actually arrived ahead of time. It was in better shape than was described and it even came with the CD. Besides regular wear and tear, I am very happy with my purchase. After receiving my book, I went to the book store to see how much they charged for the exact same book (used). They wanted $120 for the book I paid only $60 for. Very happy and will purchase again in the future.

Great Technician Review

This book is as advertised, a book written from the technicians viewpoint, with clear simple explanations and examples. It does not get bogged down in useless overcalculations, but keeps the math simple and to the point. The important change in this book is the way it explains the operations of components, circuitry, etc in a new easier to understand way.

Surprising, but not in a good way.

When I first looked at this book (after opening the package from Amazon), I thought it would be perfect... it's not a hefty 1000-page cookbook... and seemed like it would be just the perfect level of detail to rein in the broad topics into something coherent. In fact, the book does a decent job with the overall picture, but has some major flaws in style, presentation, and bias that renders it a groggy, often un-informing, experience. I stuck with it, because I had no alternative at hand, and a tight timeframe, so I can speak as a reviewer that has actually read the book.

The Good: This book contains a decent overview of SOA components and does tie them together in a good overall picture.

The Bad (part I): This book was written by an IBM Senior Architect. The technical editor for the book is an IBM Architect. The forward was written by an IBM Fellow. The back cover contains endorsements from two IBMers, one of which is the VP for WebSphere Marketing. Much of the book contains unbiased information on industry standards. However, much of the rest of the book is an over-the-top promotion of IBM products. For example, the capstone of this work is the chapter on Enterprise Service Bus. This chapter reads like glossy marketing literature for IBM products at best and like an informertial at worst. That chapter is only 30 pages long, but uses the word "WebSphere" 24 times by my count. Conversely, the non-IBM Weblogic is mentioned exactly 0 times in the same chapter, and rarely throughout the rest of the book. This book calls IBM's WESB "the prime example" of an application server based ESB and goes on to list, in bulletized form, its "features and advantages". In another section, the author states, "IBM offers the most complete product lines in this area."

The Bad (part II): This book is poorly presented. It can't decide if it is a 40,000 ft overview or a detailed description of various technologies. For example, SOAP is covered in 22 short pages. That's obviously not enough for anything more than an explanation of what it is, how it is used, why it's good, and a few examples. Yet the author tries to dive into the structure of a SOAP message to the point of who-cares detail for a book like this. In the 22 pages covering SOAP, for example, the author states FIVE TIMES that if the header element is present, it must precede the body element.

In addition, the author uses a highly verbose and repetitive style. It often seems that about 20% of the book is either telling you what it's going to tell you or telling you what it's already told you. The book could have contained the same amount of useful information in about 200 pages. This overly verbose and repetitive style gives the book a sense that the author, a PhD, does not know how to communicate effectively with lesser intellects and frequently overshoots his simplification. The result is that the work often, but inconsistently, reads a bit like a "for dummies" type of book.

Excellent Book for Integration Through SOA

Waseem did a great job of explaining the concepts of SOA for a novice, as well as providing the details needed for actual integration efforts, as best as can be done outside the context of the needs of any specific business entity.

Waseem was a colleague of mine, and is a friend. After I received the book from Amazon for the purpose of reviewing, I could find time only recently to go through the pages of this book on a long flight from DC to California. I am extremely impressed with the overall content of the book, as well as the way Waseem presented it; in particular by the way he bridges the gap from concept to practice.

I can relate to the content in this book from my own experience over the years. I have had the opportunity to create enterprise-wide SOA strategy as a lead architect at some of the largest corporations and industry leaders in the world, and led their implementations. Integration has inevitably been one of the essential aspects of these SOA implementations, due to the many mission critical legacy applications and platforms in various line of business at these large corporations, and due to their need to integrate with business partners. These needs for integration spanned a wide variety of hardware platforms (from the largest mainframes to the latest smart phones), many operating systems, a variety of middleware platforms, as well as several application platforms (like ERP systems), all from different vendors. Indeed for some of these corporations, integration is the entry point into SOA, while others could embark on a broader implementation of SOA. I also had the opportunity to conduct reviews of projects at a few other corporations; some of these projects that I reviewed were successful, and some not so successful, for a variety of reasons. This book undoubtedly covers many of the integration techniques needed for successful integration, starting with SOA concepts and related standards, and proceeding to a good amount of detail.

There are just a few details where I might differ, but that pales in comparison to the overall value of the book. I strongly recommend this book to all those who may be interested in integration through SOA. Great job, Waseem!

A Pleasant Surprise: Great Book on SOA and Enterprise Integration

When I first started reading the book, I thought it would be just another SOA book, with lots of fluff/propaganda and little solid material on SOA. However, I was very pleasantly surprised by the contents of the book. The book does provide a great overview of SOA and the associated distributing computing technologies such as sockets, RPC, distributed objects, and messaging but, in addition, it provides code examples for each of SOA-based integration patterns, which makes it extremely useful book for practictioning IT professional such as IT Architects and developers.

Furthermore, a very appealing aspects of this book is that it provides a complete description of the SOA and SOA-based integration patterns by addressing gaps in these areas which exists in the current literature. Thus, in addition to describing web services and how to develop them, it contains detailed chapters on the enterprise service bus and integration of mainframe based applications. I especially liked the chapter on the Enterprise Service Bus - I have not found such a comprehensive treatment of the Enterprise Service Bus in any other book on SOA.

In the end, I have learned a great deal from reading this book and I highly recommend this book to any IT professional who is interested in the subject of SOA and Enterprise integration. The book would serve as a great reference for IT architects, senior developers, and IT managers.

A good read to help you to pay attention

Well written how not to get your self dead book. The author covers many survival subjects and makes some great suggestions. Even if you are not the physical specimen of a Navy Seal there is information that you can and should use. Most of what is offered is common sense which many in our society is lacking in an age that could kill you if you are not paying attention. This book brings focus as to what we should be paying attention to. Can you survive an active shooter in a mall? This book increases you chances in that scenario and many others.

This is a GREAT book. A MUST HAVE and a MUST READ. I recommend reading it multiple times, as there is TONS of info.

And this is coming from a 20+yr survival instructor. That gets paid to teach survival and firearms classes.

Also, former military. Army Recon team. Naval Special Boat Unit. And a 8yr veteran of Private Security.

THINK AND ACT LIKE A SEAL TO SURVIVE

Courtley's purpose in writing is to equip his readers to think, to adapt, and to respond like a Navy SEAL in order to survive unexpected dangers whether of natural or of human origin.

I liked the book for several reasons: 1). The 34 survival scenarios covered the gamet of potential dangers for virtually any contingency one might imagine.
2). Courtley's advice is practical and resonates with good common sense.
3). His insights derive from a decade of his work in the SEAL Teams and include interesting first-hand anecdotes.
4). The book reminded me of many good lessons I learned during my ten years in the military and had almost forgotten.

The book contains the following four sections on the topic of Survival:
1). Mental and Physical
2). 34 Specific Survival Scenarios
3). Gear and Weapons
4). Medical Treatment

I have already recommended this book to many of my friends and purchased the book for my sons-in-law (neither of whom has a military background). Leonard Lauder's Extraordinary Cubist Collection

This is the catalogue of the exhibition of the same name mounted at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art from October 2014 until February 2015. It represents the final state of Leonard Lauder's collection of Cubist art, which he refined over the course of several decades to concentrate on exceptional work of the four "essential" Cubists: Picasso, Braque, Gris and Léger. It is generally thought to be the most extensive and important collection of Cubist art ever assembled by a private individual, and in April 2013, Mr. Lauder donated it to the Museum and at the same time established a Research Center for Modern Art, with the very distinguished Met curator Rebecca Rabinow in charge. Dr. Rabinow has co-edited the catalogue along with Emily Braun, Distinguished Professor of art history at the City University and for many years Mr. Lauder's private curator. The volume is introduced by a forthright conversation between Prof. Braun and Mr. Lauder, in which he explains the passions and interests which motivated him to create the collection, his evolving philosophy, and the criteria he applied to his acquisitions. Finally, he explains, what it came down to was "museum worthiness": is this a piece deserving of permanent installation in a major museum? That was always the question he asked, because from the very beginning, he was aware that in assembling his paintings, he was acting as the caretaker of a major cultural heritage that was one day destined to be a gift to a public institution. (It is quite indicative that he refers always to "the" collection, never to "my" collection.) And so, over the course of time he accumulated the artworks on display: 33 Picassos (including two sculptures), 17 Braques, 15 Légers, and 14 Grises (in February 2014, the Museum added Gris's "Still Life with Checked Tablecloth" [1913], purchasing it from Sotheby's with funds also provided by Mr. Lauder.) To call the collection spectacular does not quite do it justice; it is actually stupendous, astonishing, and extraordinary in every sense of the word. In his conversation with Dr. Bauer, Mr. Lauder mentions a comment someone made after his gift was announced, to the effect that anyone with a couple of billion dollars could walk up and down Madison Avenue and put together a similar collection (Madison Avenue being the Manhattan address of several important art dealers and galleries), which is obviously patently untrue. Money is necessary, of course (and he is thought to have spent something like a billion dollars amassing the works), but it is not enough; also needed are focus, patience, persistence to the point of dogged determination, understanding, and discrimination. Only steady perseverance and consistent application can explain the uniform excellence of these works, and they are truly the best of the best.

It is really not possible to describe the collection; it simply must be seen, and, fortunately, the catalogue does justice to the exhibition and fully meets the Museum's exacting standards. For some time the Met's major exhibition catalogues have had as their goal to present the most current and authoritative research relevant to their theme and so to advance the scholarly discussion, while at the same time providing tutorial guidance for a more general audience. They are intended to be, and are, significant events in both art history scholarship and public awareness. This volume follows that pattern: there are twenty-two scholarly essays, most of them under ten pages in length and tightly focused, including contributions by some of the most outstanding scholars of Cubism and modern art writing today (Eizabeth Cowling, Jack Flam, Christopher Green, Pepe Karmel, Dorothy Kosinski, Kenneth Silver, Anne Umland, and others). The essays follow the itinerary of the exhibition from Braque to Gris to Léger to Picasso, and the exhibits are reproduced in the approximate order of their discussion in the texts. All eighty exhibition works are reproduced full-page in very faithful color, and the reproductions are accompanied by frequent companion illustrations; the jacket text says that there are 280 illustrations, no doubt including the numerous black-and-white and color photographs of the artworks in the artists' studios and in the private residences, galleries and museum spaces where they hung prior to their accession to the Lauder collection. The essays are not all equally fascinating, of course; a couple simply seemed too short to make their point persuasive, but there are certainly enough here with arresting information and stimulating perspectives to hold one's attention and compel one to keep reading. For the most part, they are straightforward and easily comprehensible to the layman, which is not always the case with writing of this kind. On the other hand, scholars too will find much that is compelling, especially in the apparatus, which is extensive. The essays themselves are all meticulously annotated, and the catalogue checklist is exceptional in its scope, providing all curatorial information including work titles in their original languages, place and date of creation so far as known, medium/materials and support, precise size, extraneous markings recto and verso, catalogue raisonné numbers, provenance, prior exhibitions, and literature (apparently through 2013). There is an excellent selected bibliography (35 pp.), a provenance index identifying all entities listed in the provenance record, and a comprehensive index. This is material very welcome to some readers, but most people will want to have this book simply for its stunning paintings and stimulating discussions, and, especially, as a recollection of a unique moment in our collective celebration of the art of modernity and as a welcome reminder of the ennobling behests of great philanthropy. We owe Leonard A. Lauder an enormous debt of gratitude: there is no end to the books on Cubism, but there is none quite so special as this exceptional and amazing catalogue.

Buy the Book and See the MMA Exhibit-Cubist Works

Bought the book twice. Once at the Metropolitan Museum of Art ((NYC) when viewing the underlying Leonard Lauder Cubism Exhibit and again on Amazon for an art lover friend, when I returned. The works in the exhibit are suppose to ultimately become part of the MMA's permanent collection. Buy the book before you go to see the works. It will enhance your understanding and appreciation of these marvelous Cubists works.

Social and political context of Abstract Expressionism

Guilbaut offers an compelling account of the European-American situation during and immediately following WWII, when the center of Western culture was transferred from Paris to New York. It was not an easy shift; although Paris was in ruins, Europeans and the French especially did not want to see their centuries-long monopoly put in the hands of such a young and, in their view, na�ve country. A major theme throughout this text is the shifting alliances of the left in regard to Marxism and socialism. While most liberals espoused Communism in the 30s, by the early 40s it had come to be seen as another form of fascism, and for artists this meant censorship. American artists were challenged to prove themselves unique from the Parisian avant-garde while at the same time not promoting a national style, which was seen as provincial (due to regionalism in the previous decade) and dangerous (since nationalism had just produced a world war). To make things even more interesting, Guilbaut also describes how contemporary audiences and the US government went from hating the new abstract art to valuing it, or at least creating a new American art market for it (the former) and using it as a form of propaganda during the Cold War (the latter, by touting it in Europe as a symbol of American freedom and individuality, in contrast to state-dictated art). Aside from having a bizarre ending, and overusing the word shibboleth, I love this book! It provides a much more solid and interesting foundation than other books on Ab Ex, such as those by Dore Ashton and Irving Sandler.

I am an Argentine art critic and curator. I knew of this book but had not read it. I ordered it because I found the title ingenious. I thought it would be entertaining as well as good. It goes further. It is an in-depth study of the social and political circumnstances that accompanied the intellectual and creative processes of American artists previous, during and after the Second World War. It is an articulate explanation of why artists who were thouroughly conscious of social shortcomings chose to create their own ivory towers through styles that bore, for the most part, no recognizable physical references. This road into a spiritual realm beyond recognizable styles, influenced, but not derivative of European Modern art, was a way out of political engagement in a world they could no longer abide. And, the interesting part is that they were promoted by the political powers that were, not through an appreciation for their creative qualities, but to show that the US was the new cultural center of the world: strong, energetic and competitive.

Another most important point for me. I had always wondered why so many of the Abstract Expressionists had committed suicide. Why this deeply neurotic vent? The answer, I think, is in this book. Their deep dissillusion with socialist ideals after Stalin, the failure of the US to create a truly democratic society in which idealistic notions of equality and freedom were respected, were fatal to their belief in a better world.
