From Publishers Weekly
Students of espionage will value this biography of the legendary Soviet mole who penetrated the inner sanctum of British intelligence. Borovik, a Moscow journalist, taped hundreds of hours of interviews with the master spy during his final years, and was granted access to Philby's KGB files. There's a wealth of new material here, especially on the 1951-56 period, when the shock waves from the Donald Maclean-Guy Burgess defections threatened to unmask Philby. He defended himself so successfully under interrogation that MI6 re-recruited him for an extended mission to Beirut. In 1963, about to be exposed, he defected to Moscow, where he remained until his death in 1988. As depicted in this engrossing biography, presented from the Russian viewpoint, Philby was not only a brilliant spy but a man of charm and wit who, whatever else can be said about him, remained true to his ideals to the end. From Booklist
Borovik is not the first to flip through KGB case file 5581, the number of Philby's personnel dossier. Odd documents from it have appeared in recent books, such as a study of the Hess flap of 1941 (Ten Days to Destiny, John Costello, 1993). Anthony Cave Brown, the most commanding biographer thus far of the English mole, certainly had access to the file for Treason in the Blood. Perhaps publishers just ought to print the unexpurgated file to slake the thirst for Philbyiana. In the meantime, Borovik's book, based on his chats with the spy in retirement, hones in on the methods of tradecraft: spotting potential recruits, making the recruitment, and running the agent via signals, ciphers, and drops, all as viewed from the funnel of the file. Juxtaposed with Philby's recollections of his glory days as rewritten by Borovik are interesting verbatim passages from the file that record disagreement between Philby's controls and Moscow Center about their agent's trustworthiness, which apparently was never completely convincing to the KGB, surprisingly enough. Philby was kept ignorant of these doubts, but there is no doubt here that the fanatically specialist reader will dive into this pro-Philby account. Gilbert Taylor

From Kirkus Reviews
Soviet spy Kim Philby, discreet to the last, speaks at length here about his career without saying much new, but his KGB file is more revealing. Soviet journalist Borovik, with the assistance of the experienced British newspaperman Knightley (The Master Spy: The Story of Kim Philby, 1989), had the good idea (actually suggested to him by Graham Greene) of juxtaposing extensive taped interviews with Philby during his last years in Moscow with the spy's KGB file, which was made available to Borovik after Philby's death in 1988. This is particularly fruitful for the first part of Philby's career, since for some unexplained reason the file does not continue beyond the early years of WW II, after which Philby's recollections, mostly repetitive of his own book, are supplemented by the recollections of a former KGB agent in London who didn't work with Philby at all. The main revelation to come out of the KGB files is that Philby was recruited, not as part of a clever plot to seed the British bureaucracy with able young sympathizers, but because the KGB incorrectly believed that Philby's father was in British intelligence and that Philby could pick his brains. Another striking feature is the suspicion with which Philby was regarded by the KGB, seemingly throughout his career. A final surprise is the apparent insouciance with which the KGB wrecked Philby's career, allowing him to be compromised by Guy Burgess's flight to Moscow. Philby himself believed that he could have had another ten years in position if it had not been for this mistake. (See also Treason in the Blood by Anthony Cave Brown, reviewed on p. 1323.) Some good new material on an eternally intriguing subject, marred by the unexplained absence of later KGB material and the author's readiness to embellish his tapes of Philby with lengthy conversations reconstructed from what he thinks may have occurred. -- Copyright 1994, Kirkus Associates, LP. An Intriguing Piece of the Philby Puzzle
By F. S. L'hoir
Genrikh Borovik's absorbing account of the life and times of Kim Philby is especially compelling. Based upon a combination of personal interviews with the Cambridge spy during the last years of his life and a comparison of his reminiscences with the actual KGB files (which Philby was never allowed to see), the book offers new insights to the career of a man who was as enigmatic as he was charming (characteristics about which both his friends and enemies were in agreement).

Borovik, a Russian journalist (who seems to be a cross between Tom Brokaw and Phil Donahue), was able to get access both to Philby and to the KGB files because of Glasnost. He is no apologist for the old communist regime, nor is he flummoxed by the Philby charm. Borovik lets the reader know when his subject has not been completely candid with him on a particular topic. Nevertheless, the author presents a sympathetic portrait of a man (with a delightful sense of humor) who may have betrayed his country (during the Cold War) but never betrayed his ideals.

Borovik also provides a fascinating glimpse into the years in which Philby, who had resigned from MI6 under suspicion after Burgess and Maclean had defected to Moscow, was rehired by British Intelligence as an agent in Beirut (a touchy subject about which most books are reticent).

Perhaps one of the most interesting aspects of the book, however, is its depiction of the dilemma in which Philby found himself--indeed, Burgess and Blunt found themselves in the same pickle--when the information he provided was judged by the KGB to be "too good" to be believed! British Intelligence could not have been so "unprofessional that they failed to notice that Soviet agents were carrying out documents from SIS by the suitcase [.]" (p. 213). Philby had to have been a double agent, as did the other two (For some reason, they never doubted Maclean.). Moscow's obsession that Philby and the others were British plants stemmed from the fact that when the agents were continually asked how many British spies were working in Russia, and the (truthful) answer was always "none," they were never believed. For years, in fact, Philby and the others were hounded by the KGB and forced to write endless time-wasting reports on the (non-existent) "main issue," the number of British agents in the Soviet Union. Philby's answer remained unwavering: "There are no British agents in the Soviet Union.". Although this cloud of suspicion would eventually dispel, it would nevertheless materialize from time to time and cast its shadow on Kim Philby even after his defection, depending upon who was in power in Moscow.

Borovik's account of the death of Kim Philby, who served the Soviet Union for some thirty years, is both moving and ironic. As the author observes on page 375, "Three and a half years [after his death], the country to which he had devoted his life ceased to exist."

Important New Insights
By William R. Drake
This was the third book I read that focused on Philby. (The other two books: Phillip Knightley's valuable book "Philby: The Life and Views of the KGB Masterspy" [based on interviews with Philby in Russia] and Philby's own very readable book "My Silent War"). Amazon has a very good review of "The Philby Files" already posted ("An Intriguing Piece of the Philby Puzzle" by F. S. L'hoir, 5/16/05) and I will just add some to what that writer wrote. In addition to being granted access to the remarkable information in Philby's KGB files and interviewing Philby in Russia for many hours, the Russian author also interviewed Yuri Modin who, as a KGB agent, worked with Burgess, Blunt and Cairncross. Among other things, Modin gives valuable insights into the defections of Burgess and Maclain, revealing that it was the KGB that was responsible for Burgess' one-way flight to Russia, which had a big hand in destroying Philby's intelligence career. (Philby always blamed Burgess for his defection.) As well as revealing the KGB's mistrust of Philby for a period of time, and previously unknown details about the Burgess/Maclain defections, the book reveals details about the recruitments of Maclain and Burgess. Borovik also gives a good picture of the Stalin era, during which several of Philby's Russian handlers were called back to Russia and executed as "spies." For those who have not read other books on Philby, the well-written book gives a pretty good overview of the Philby story. Perhaps unavoidably, the book repeats a number of details that are in the other two books I read, which made for boring reading at times. In spite of that, because of the new information the author uncovers, this book is a "must read" for anyone seriously interested in Philby and/or the Cambridge spies.

Read but Verify
By Hamilton Beck
Genrikh Borovik's "The Philby Files," now more than two decades old, remains one of the most enjoyable – if not always reliable – books on Kim Philby. Writing in a thoughtful, at times skeptical tone, Borovik provides evidence for how the USSR could be its own worst enemy, as for example when it effectively blinded itself with the purges of the late '30s. Institutional memory was wiped out to such a degree that Moscow Center had to ask surviving lower-level agents to remind them just who Philby and the other Cambridge recruits were.

Among the most interesting chapters are the ones where Borovik tries to lay to rest any lingering suspicions that Philby may have been a triple agent, only pretending to work for the Soviets while feeding them disinformation. While it is hardly surprising that "Sonny" was never completely trusted, professional skepticism is one thing, unremitting distrust another. Stalin suffered from the paranoid's greatest fear – that of being insufficiently suspicious. So if Philby, Burgess, Maclean and the rest turned over nothing on British penetration of the USSR, that was itself evidence of their duplicity. And if they turned over a wealth of evidence on other matters, that was simply more evidence of the same. Harboring doubts was a virtue, and acting on trust was in Stalin's view "the sickness of idiots." (pg. 213)

As it played out, Moscow first suspected Philby of being a German plant, then of working for the British. The re-direction coincided with the abrupt re-orientation of Stalin's policy in 1939, away from hostility towards Hitler to cooperation with him, and heightened distrust of London. The implications were clear, at least to the cleverest intelligence analysts in Moscow Center, who made sure their views always stayed in sync with the shifting views of the leadership. They figured out what needed to be proved, and looked around for ways to supply the evidence. Something that has never happened in Washington, thank goodness.

From Moscow's point of view, the passivity of the British was simply inexplicable. One who inadvertently fed their suspicion was Philby himself. Maintaining, as he consistently did, that the "SIS was not engaged in any subversive and espionage work against the Soviet Union" before 1944 was not likely to persuade many people in the Kremlin. (pg. 193) And yet he kept on reporting what they did not want to hear and refused to believe. In these years, the main threats to agents such as Philby came not from British counter-intelligence but from their own Center, from "their own people." (pg. 203) When an informant does not provide the information that is expected and desired, it is of little comfort to be proven correct years later.

Borovik quotes words of wisdom from Philby, making him echo Graham Greene. "We tend to look for a solid logical line in the various cleaner decisions of the intelligence services. But every such decision involved the human factor. And that means that you can never exclude the possibility of a mistake, simple stupidity, as in chess. By the way, that is the great lack in spy novels, where the authors write their plots, even complicated ones, very logically. The most complicated logical construction is predictable and expected. These writers exclude the human factor, that is, error, in their work. There is only one writer who writes about intelligence with the human factor always present. That, of course, is Graham Greene. There is always some completely illogical, unexpected thing in his books. That's why they are all so truthful and human." (pg. 323)

So why question the book's reliability? First off, some of the quotations provided here, said to have been written in English originally, sound very much like translations from Russian. Let's look, for example, at this one from near the end of the book (pg. 372). According to Borovik, in "The Quiet American" we find this description of Pyle: "He is absolutely convinced of his righteousness and absolutely indifferent." To my ear, this does not sound like a sentence Graham Greene would have written. And indeed, though the absence of footnotes makes it difficult to check Borovik's source, a perusal of the novel reveals no such passage.

What one does find, however, is Greene's original – and rather different – sentence (near the end of Part Three): "He was impregnably armoured by his good intentions and his ignorance." This is a key sentence in the novel, one that sums up Pyle's character, yet his initial "ignorance" has been turned into "indifferent," which obviously is not quite the same. It seems that what happened was that Greene's original text was translated fairly accurately for the Russian edition of his novel, then for Borovik's book this sentence was retranslated (by Antonina Bouis) back into English, with some resultant distortion.

Next, take Philby's lecture to KGB officers which Borovik alleges he delivered at their club in 1977. According to his summary, Philby "talked about the five-year plan he had developed for himself before leaving for Istanbul as the SIS chief in Turkey," a schedule that was later put aside due to the pressure of work. He goes on to joke about being "certain that this could never have happened at the KGB, where planned work was the basis of everything." Borovik adds, "The response of the 500 agents in the audience was a roar of laughter." He concludes by having Philby say he knew that the Moscow "Centre undoubtedly needed him." (pg. 362)

All this bears little resemblance to the lecture that Philby actually presented. Let us leave aside the minor error of location (it was delivered at KGB headquarters in Yasenovo, in Moscow's suburbs, not the officers' club downtown, which was the site of his wake in 1988). More importantly, the original 14-page text, based on Philby's own typescript and printed in Rufina Philby's memoir "The Private Life of Kim Philby," differs markedly from the summary provided by Borovik. In fact, about the only point of similarity is that in both versions Philby told a joke which went over well. So either there were two different lectures (something no one has ever maintained), or there is some disinformation here. (Readers can find more detail at my site hamiltonbeck dot wordpress dot com.)

In short, "The Philby Files" is a good read, as long as you don't probe too deeply into the details. While his book may be vivid, on some matters, Borovik was misinformed at best. Neither the story nor the translation can be considered 100% reliable. Use with caution.

The Tool For Change! Must-Read
By Josh Manzione
Dr. Joe Dispenza's first book, Evolve Your Brain, was in my opinion, a fantastic book, yes it was a bit heavy in some parts, but I loved the science in it. Obviously, off course, some people simply skipped to page 381, to skip the "science stuff" and read the chapter starting on that page "The Art and Science of Mental Rehearsal". "Breaking The Habit Of Being Yourself" raises the bar completely, with now the "How To" companion in easy to follow steps to be comprehended and practiced. The book was also a very easy to read, straight to the point, with fantastic images to compliment nicely the information conveyed, in almost every chapter to understand more of Dr. Joe's message.

This is a book I could not put down. I am now up to doing the Induction Step of the Meditation, and I quickly rushed to Dr. Joe's website to purchase the audio materials for the meditation. The book has been divided into 3 parts, I have written my notes on each chapter as follows:

PART I - THE SCIENCE OF YOU

Chapter 1: The Quantum You:

-You and the world are made up of energy and matter.
-If you look at the body, including the brain, at the cellular level you have: Tissues > Cells > Molecules > Atoms > Subatomic Particles > Energy.
-Your thoughts have an effect on the Quantum Field.
-We are in control of our past, present, and future.
-When we focus on a thought. Single--mindedly, we make it more real than anything else. We are experiencing the thought beyond the physical realm.
-We can create our future.

Chapter 2: Overcoming Your Environment:

-The environment causes us to think. Familiar places, things, people and circumstances fire a set of circuits which cause the brain to think in certain ways (an external stimulus is causing us to think).
-If the environment causes us to think, firing the same circuits over and over, the circuits become hardwired and part of our being.
-"Nerve cells that fire together wire together" - Hebbs Law
-To change then is to think greater than the environment and any external stimulus.
-Mental Rehearsal plays a major role in building new neuron networks in the brain.

Chapter 3: Overcoming Your Body

-Every time you have a thought you make a chemical.
-If you think the way you feel, and feel the way you think, over and over, you create a state of being.
-Positive thoughts alone will not work to change this.
-The environment pushes genes in our bodies, which cause stress, disease, or happiness and joy.
-If you ever forget to remember a phone number, you pick up the phone and you just put your fingers on the buttons, and suddenly your body knows better then your brain.
-To change is to pull the mind out of the body and put it back in the brain.
-To change is to think greater than how you feel.
-Mental Rehearsal also contributes to changing the body physically and mentally.

Chapter 4: Overcoming Time

-We happen to live in the emotions we have memorized from the past.
-We need to live in the present moment and focus on new emotions.
-When we watch a movie, read a book, go on a long drive, etc - we lose track of time.
-To change is to change the emotions we memorize, we need to move from a state of anger or jealousy to a state of thankfulness and gratitude.

Chapter 5: Survival Vs Creation

-Living in a state of survival creates stress, disease, and it activates the fight or flight nervous system.
-To change is to be selfless, not selfish. Forget about: Time, Your Body, Your Environment.
-True Creation is forgetting the "Big 3".
1. Metacognition: Become self-aware, an observer.
2. Create a new mind to think about new ways of being... asking questions like: What would it be like to... ?, What is a better way to be... ?, What if I was this person, living in this reality?, Who in history do I admire, what traits do they have I can resemble?
3. Make thought more real than anything else is creation.

PART II - YOUR BRAIN AND MEDITATION

Chapter 6: Three Brains: Thinking To Doing To Being

-We go from: Thinking (Neocortex) > Doing (Limbic Brain) > Being (Cerebellum)
Emotions (in the limbic or mid brain) are the end products of experience.
-If you wake up from meditation differently before you sat down before, you have changed. You feel different.
-However, you must think and feel in harmony, you can not think one way and feel another way.
-When you think and feel different, and once you do something and taking action consistently, you will eventually be that new person. You will be in a new state of being, which is wisdom.
-A new state of being creates a new personality... A new personality produces a new personal reality.

Chapter 7: The Gap

-We only get our identity from other things, people and circumstances.
Our cars, phones, jobs, etc make us feel good.
-When we die, none of this exists... so where does true happiness come from?
-Happiness must come from within, not from the outside world.
-What we appear on the outside is different from what we really are.
-We need to close the gap and start being happy inside - meditation will help with this.

Chapter 8: Meditation, Demystifying The Mystical And Waves Of Your Future

-Remind yourself who you no longer want to "be" until this becomes so familiar that you know your old self - thoughts, behaviours and emotions connected to the old you that you want to change - to the extent that you unfire and unwire the old mind away and no longer signal the same genes in the same ways.
-Then repeatedly contemplate who you want to "be".
-This will fire and wire new levels of mind. Eventually this will become second nature, and that is change.

PART III - STEPPING TOWARD YOUR NEW DESTINY

This particular part goes into Chapter 9: The Meditative Process: Introduction and Preparation - which explains all the tools you need to prepare you for the meditation. The chapters that follow after, are all the steps clearly explained for your meditation journey.

Part III is the "how to do it" part of the book - with fantastic ways and variations to do the meditation. If I was asked today what would be the only book I could recommend for creating change in our lives and breaking old habits and routines, I would answer "Breaking The Habit Of Being Yourself - By Dr. Joe Dispenza".

Update 13/10/2012: To compliment this book in terms of also breaking habit's, I highly recommend the book "The Power of Habit: Why We Do What We Do in Life and Business" which can be purchased here on Amazon!

Update 17/07/2014: I'm still using the techniques in this book and is still very effective. Check out Dr Joe's new book "You Are the Placebo: Making Your Mind Matter" As that book focuses on changing illness/beliefs while this is more habit based changes, per just my opinion.

Stepping toward your New Destiny!!!
By Claudia Ruiz
Have you heard about neuroplasticity? Probably you have, since it is becoming a common term thanks to the brain discoveries available with our latest technologies. If you haven't heard about it, I suggest you to google it while your copy of this book arrives because it will be a topic that will come up in a dinner conversation very soon :).

Dr. Joe on Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself, combines the science with the HOW TO apply the new discoveries that surround neuroplasticity on our daily lives. Is your life already good? Make it even better! Do you think it could be better? whether your answer is yes or not, this is a must read. I highly recommend this book.

Why is it important to me that functional brain scans are showing that people are activating and expanding clusters of neurons in a specific area of the brain just by rehearsing a thought? Times are changing and to use neuroplasticity with all the amazing discoveries as a topic for your next dinner conversation is fun, but this book will teach you that true empowerment comes when we start to look deeply at our beliefs. It will teach you how to "install" the neural hardware needed to physiologically prepare you for new amazing events by creating the "real estate" of neurons ready to take advantage of opportunities that may have been invisible in the past. Dr Joe takes you on a journey on how to go from thinking to doing to being using our 3 brains, stepping toward your New Destiny in a state of creation and not in a state of survival or by default.
Like any other skill, "..if you keep installing, reinforcing, and refining your neurological hardware, the end result of that repetition is a neural network - in effect, a new software program. Just like a computer software this program (for example, a behavior, an attitude, or an emotional state) now runs automatically.." Dr. Joe says.

And my favorite question you can answer after reading the book:
"..Can you believe in a future you cannot yet see or experience with your senses but have thought about enough times in your mind that your brain is actually changed to look like the experience has already happened ahead of the physical event in your external environment? If so, then your brain is no longer a record of the past but has become a map to the future.."

A Breakthrough Bestseller!
By Wildemind
Anyone who remembers the hit indie cult film, What the Bleep Do We Know!? that took the theaters by storm in a grassroots phenomenon unlike any seen before will remember Dr. Joe Dispenza who is an audience favorite as one of the experts interviewed along with a host of other scientists and theologians, who made the relatively inaccessible strange quantum world accessible to the masses. The film had a lasting impact and has been distributed to millions around the world, becoming part of the cultural zeitgeist and finally making it cool to be holistically-oriented.

Dr. Joe is one of the best communicators in the world of this area of science as well as neuroscience, neurology, brain function, chemistry, cellular biology, memory formation, and aging and longevity. This book follows his first, Evolve Your Brain: The Science of Changing Your Mind which laid down the science for this one.

The first book was a bit heady and as a layperson with an avid interest in personal development and a growing interest in science, I must admit it was a bit difficult for me to read. I think it may have been intended for those who are practitioners with a science background as well as those in holistic and heart-centered therapies who by now it seems, should really know this stuff if they are working with people. I found myself recommending the first one to a whole host of professionals in the helping and healing professions - nurses, psychologists, physiotherapists, body workers, yoga teachers, EFT practitioners, and those who lead courses in personal development and spirituality.

This new book is a real breakthrough in terms of practical application. Dr. Joe's genius is in many areas, but certainly he must now be seen as one of the world's top voices in how to apply the new science to your life. It is a delightful tour of what makes us work and more importantly, how you can make lasting change in your life. I have done several personal development workshops and many claim to bring about lasting change, but few really deliver on that promise. But this book and I am sure Dr. Joe's trainings bring this important work to the common individual and it is designed to facilitate change.

Mainstream science is being forced to catch up to the cutting edge scientists who have labored long and hard without the benefit of grant money because the subatomic world is affecting everything from computers to smart phones to warfare. I look forward to the day my college physics teacher has to recant due to the fact he once said to me after discussing the classic work, The Tao of Physics: An Exploration of the Parallels between Modern Physics and Eastern Mysticism that "You really don't think this affect us in our day to day lives do you?" That day, thanks to works like this one, is coming sooner than most people would think!

I will still recommend this for the professionals to read and I think they will read it with glee and gain many insights. But this one I like to think is for people like myself - those who want to grow and change and develop to be their best from the inside out!

I noticed that Dr. Joe is also in a number of other films that are out, but one that sounds very exciting is the forthcoming film "People vs. the State of Illusion," which I am sure many of his fans will want to catch.

Lucy Otswego is a big girl who towers over just about everyone and everything in her small Alaskan town, except for her father’s horrible reputation as a mean drunk. At 15, she runs away from the cruel classmates who see her only as “the Giant,” the embarrassed adults who pity her, and the abusive father whose fleeting attentiveness is worse than his indifference. When the crew of a crabbing boat assumes she’s much older than she is and invites her to join them for the season, she thrills at the possibility of escaping her teenaged life. Buoyed by the camaraderie and support of her new shipmates, Lucy quickly masters the mind-numbing cold
and backbreaking work. But when her masquerade is threatened, she learns that there are no shortcuts to growing up.

Amazon.com Review
Distraught over the death of a stray dog she's adopted, and worn out after a lost childhood spent deflecting jabs at her towering height and picking up after her alcoholic, unemployed father, 15-year-old Lucy ("the Giant") escapes from her Sitka, Alaska, home north to Kodiak, and temporarily reinvents herself as an adult. Lucy, now known as Barbara, winds up on a crabbing boat, with a motley crew that is destined to help her along the painful path to self-discovery.

Fast-paced and poignant, Sherri L. Smith's first young adult novel will appeal to anyone who has ever felt like an outsider in her or his own world. Readers will root for Lucy, never doubting that she will come out ahead... eventually. Her struggles--both physical and emotional--are authentic and beautifully portrayed. Smith's descriptions of the grueling yet rewarding work on the Bering Sea are vivid, and reflect nicely the inner work of her protagonist. We hope this is only the first of many novels from this gifted new author. (Ages 12 and older) --Emilie Coulter

From Publishers Weekly
Lucy, the 15-year-old heroine of this bittersweet debut novel, quite literally doesn't fit in. At six-foot-plus (she has stopped measuring her height), she is the butt of constant teasing at her school in small-town Alaska; at home, her room, with its low angled ceiling and "doll-sized" bed, is so small she can't even stretch her legs out in it. Her mother abandoned the family years ago, leaving Lucy to dodge the rages of her alcoholic, unemployed father. Smith sets the stage quickly. In the opening scene, Lucy performs her almost nightly ritual of hauling her dad home after he passes out in a bar. Upset by the sudden death of the stray dog she had befriended, Lucy impulsively walks to the airport and, mistaken for a member of a "work tour," boards a charter flight to Kodiak. There, she wins a drinking contest in a bar and lands a job on a crabbing boat. Smith makes up for weaknesses in the dialogue with compelling descriptions of the harrowing storms at sea, backbreaking yet satisfying work on board and the heroine's deepening friendships with several crew members. Although Lucy's ability to pass for an adult strains credibility somewhat, as does the ending, her first-person narration is affecting. Ages 12-up.

From School Library Journal
Grade 7-10-At 15, Lucy Otsego is six feet tall and stocky of build. She lives in Sitka, AK, with her drunken father and with the taunts of many of her classmates. Her Haida mother left the family when Lucy was seven and the girl longs for her without being able to remember her clearly. After adopting a stray, Lucy pulls herself out of her emotional slump-only to fall again and hard when the dog dies in spite of an emergency trip to the unaffordable veterinarian. Depressed and feeling hopeless, she ditches school and, without making any real plan, boards the small plane that takes fishing crews north to Kodiak. Because of her size and her ability to keep her own council, Lucy has no trouble beginning life anew, this time as an adult woman named Barbara. She gets a job aboard a crabbing boat and makes friends with most of the crew, but an enemy of one disgruntled crabber. Her first fishing run is a success; during her second, her nemesis tells her secret. A storm at sea brings both crew and novel to the climax, and the teen is given yet a third try at life after nearly drowning. Lucy's adventures end on a hopeful and credible note; she's back with her father in Sitka, yet she knows that her friends-both in Sitka and in Kodiak-are there for her. Fast paced and emotionally resonant, this novel will be easy to booktalk and to get into appreciative hands.

A Giant Tale
By Ciaramine
I loved this novel about 15 year old Lucy who runs away from a sad life with her alcoholic dad to a new life. The new life gives her a taste of what it's like to be with people who care about her. The Alaska setting and the chapters that take place on the crabbing boat on the Bering Sea are my favorite. Anyone who enjoys the TV show The Deadliest Catch will enjoy the up close experience of worrying about Lucy as she struggles to survive the ice storm and other dangers of a life at sea. Secondary characters are terrific. This is a quick read and a good choice for teens and adults who want to read an exciting story with nail-biting suspense and a sentimental heart.

Terrific book!
By Esme R. Codell
An enjoyable read from start to finish! Terrific detail and a strong voice make this book really unique and believable. Many teen readers will relate to Lucy's struggling to play the role of an adult with parts of herself still a kid...all in the context of a high seas adventure. A great follow-up for kids who loved Avi's The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle in grade school! One of the best YA's of the the year so far, I hope this author gets the accolades she deserves!

5 Giant Stars for Lucy!
By School Faery
Lucy is a real page turner! I couldn't put the book down once I started reading. The heroine is a strong and believable character. She has had to grow strong due to living with an inattentive, alcoholic father and no mother. She is ackwardly taller than the other students in school. Her life takes another tragic turn which leads her on a great adventure away from home, where she must live and act as an adult. I think teen-aged readers, both girls and boys, can identify with Lucy on many levels. What teenager doesn't have family issues and/or some feeling of physical ackwardness? The character inspires by being strong, yet vulnerable. It is also refreshing to read about a teenage girl with more interesting thoughts than worries about boys and clothes. This is an adventurous yet "real" story that both teens and adults can enjoy! I can't wait to see more books by Sherri L. Smith.

Pray the Word for Your Church, by Tiece L King

Praying for a Church--for the Church--is one of the most spiritually significant things we can do for the Kingdom of God. In this prayer guide, Ty King has provided 31 powerful Scripture-based prayers that focus on praying the purposes of Jesus Christ for His Bride, the Church. Not meant to be prayed as rote prayers, Pray the Word for Your Church will stimulate the user to go deeper into prayer-beyond the actual prayers in the book-to pray God's heart for their own community of faith. Includes a 21-page "Praying for My Church Community Journal" for personal reflection and development of your own Scripture-based prayers. "Theologically rich, bursting with Scripture, thoughtfully written, worthy of reflection and faith-enlarging, this is a prayer tool that many sincere Jesus-followers will turn to again and again." -Dr. John Stumbo, President, The Christian & Missionary Alliance
