nice collection of articles representative of RAND's work in public policy

Sally Morton and John Rolph edited and contributed to this collection of case studies of public policy issues that were conducted by the Economics and Statistics Group at the RAND Corporation. Sally is the current head of the group and John is a former head who is now a department chairman at the University of Southern California. The statistics group at RAND has a celebrated history for excellent and unbiased analyses of public policy data. As an organization they have existed since 1976 but individuals from the group had an impact even early. For example, Bill Rogers was part of the famous Princeton robustness study (published in 1972) while he was employed at RAND.
Many of the leaders of this group have participated in writing these studies including several who have moved on to careers elsewhere (e.g. Bob Bell, now at AT&T Labs - Research; John Rolph, now at USC; Jim Hodges, now at University of Minnesota; and Carl Morris, now at Harvard University).

Those currently at RAND who have contributed include Allan Abrahamse, John Adams, Phyllis Ellickson, Lionel Galway, Catherine Jackson, Dan McCaffrey, Sally Morton and Dan Relles. This is a mix of very seasoned RAND statisticians along with some junior members and colleagues. Several members of the group did not contribute to the case studies but well could have. I was particularly surprised at the absence of Naihua Duan who is an ASA fellow and has contributed to major health studies at RAND. Naihua has also been responsible for innovations while at RAND including contributions to sliced inverse regression and transformation "smearing" methods.

Nevertheless, the collection of studies are both interesting and important to the public and in several cases the findings go counter to the popular information in the media. Well-known Stanford Statistics Professor Brad Efron calls the media statements "misinformation" and "disinformation" and claims that RAND gets it right in his foreward to the book. Many Stanford students and colleagues of Efron had careers at RAND including Bob Bell, Naihua Duan, Carl Morris, Bill Rogers and Sally Morton.

There are a total of 10 case studies included. The first three are categorized as primarily addressing the collection of data (addressing issues in the design phase). The next three are considered to be primarily addressing the detection of effects (estimation or hypothesis testing aspects of statistical analysis) and the last four are considered to emphasize the understanding of relationships.

I have skimmed through all ten case studies and have read case numbers 3, 4, 5 and 7 in detail. The topics are as follows: 1. School-Based Drug Prevention by Bell and Ellickson. 2. The Health Insurance Experiment by Morris and Hill. 3. Counting the Homeless by Abrahamse. 4. Periodicity in the Global Mean Temperature Series? by Adams, Hammitt and Hodges. 5. Racial Bias in Death Sentencing by Morton and Rolph. 6. Malpractice and the Impaired Physician by McGuigan and Rolph. 7. Supply Delays for F-14 Jet Engine Repair Parts by Galway. 8. Hospital Mortality Rates by Thomas and Rolph. 9. Eye-Care Supply and Need by Relles, Jackson and Lee. 10. Modeling Block Grant Formulas for Substance Abuse Treatment by McCaffrey and Adams.

Analysis in #3 indicates that there are only about 400 homeless in Orange County as opposed to public estimates and claims of 4000 or more. Results in #4 indicate that the data are inconclusive regarding a global warming effect. In #5 both logistic regression and tree classification methods are used to show no clear bias in death sentencing based on the race of the victim. In #7 careful analysis of the data reveal that transporting supplies is the key factor in delays for getting repair parts for the engines and not the slow procurement process.

As an applied statistician who does a fair amount of consulting, I always find good case studies to be enlightening and helpful to me in my practice of statistics. These articles are very good and enlightening and they follow a common format. They start with an executive summary that provides an overview and the bottom line results. This is followed by an introductory section and then a section describing the study design, data collection, data sources and elements. The third section deals with datafile creation, descriptive statistics and exploratory data analysis. The fourth section covers statistical methods and models used. The fifth section gives results. Section 6 is a discussion section which may include summary, possible future extensions of the analysis, and conclusion and recommendations. The final section provides exercises. This last section is excellent for a course based on the case studies as it tests the student knowledge based on material learned in the case study. Sometimes self-contained problems are given but in other cases the reader is referred to the casebook web page at the RAND web site where data sources can be found to do the exercises.

About the Author

Francisca de Haan is Professor of Gender Studies at the Central European University,
Budapest, Hungary. Her publications include The Rise of Caring Power. Elizabeth Fry and Josephine Butler in Britain and the Netherlands (Amsterdam University Press, 1999), co-authored with Annemieke van Drenth; and A Biographical Dictionary of Women’s Movements and Feminisms. Central, Eastern, and South Eastern Europe, 19th and 20th Centuries (Central European University Press, 2006), co-edited with Krassimira Daskalova and Anna Loutfi.

June Purvis is Professor of Women’s and Gender History, University of Portsmouth, UK. Her publications include, Emmeline Pankhurst: a biography (2002, Routledge), and The Women’s Suffrage Movement: new feminist perspectives, co-edited with Maroula Joannou (Manchester University Press, 1998 and 2010).

First, it should be understood that this book is less about Bruce Lee than about the author and Lee's influence on his life. During his adolescent years, the diminutive, troubled Miller was probably the only guy on the planet who could have had the hurt put on him by the 98-pound weakling of Charles Atlas ads. Then came Muhammad Ali and Bruce LeeDa large man who moved with preternatural grace and a small man whose punching power almost matched his blinding speed. Both seemed almost to "do it with mirrors" and, reasoned the young Miller, perhaps so could he, as he devoted his life to kickboxing and in the process discovered that he did, indeed, have a life. In his first book, The Tao of Muhammad Ali, Miller already honored one hero. In this one, after telling his story, Miller spends not quite half the book on Lee's saga, gently debunking many myths. The title is deceptive. This fantastic second book by Miller runs deeper than an account of the author growing up as a "karate kid" in the early 1970s. It is equally a study of the nature and role of the hero in popular culture, a poignant and unusual coming-of-age story, and an informative biography of Bruce Lee. As with Muhammad Ali, the author's other childhood hero (The Tao of Muhammad Ali [1996], Lee was part of the select group of athletes who transcended sports to become international pop culture icons. Miller begins the story with his own dismal childhood in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. His mother died early in his life; he was a miserable child and adolescent--scrawny, with few friends and no apparent academic or vocational gifts or inclinations. Watching Lee in Enter the Dragon in 1973 changed his life. Miller began a lifelong interest in martial arts and Eastern philosophy. In the late 1980s, he traded his punching bags for a computer and became a writer and journalist, and it is his skill as a storyteller that really makes Tao shine. He beautifully illuminates the pitfalls and triumphs of Lee's early life, captivating the reader. In the end, he dispels many of the myths behind Bruce Lee the man that captivated him as a youth, myths about Lee's ability as a karate god and mystic seer. Part biography of Bruce Lee, and part autobiography of the author

While one expects this to be a biography of Bruce Lee, the first half of it is much more an autobiography of the author that is loosely themed around Bruce Lee’s influence on his life. It’s an unusual book in this regard. However, while my description may induce visions of a dismal read by a self-absorbed author, it’s really not so bad. The latter half of the book is much more tightly focused on the events of Bruce Lee’s life—or, more dramatically, his death.

To be fair, there’s not much material for a Bruce Lee biography. Few lights have shone so bright that, while brief, they provided decades of afterglow. Bruce Lee was just in the news last week as he was made a character in a new MMA video game—over 40 years after his death. (It might seem odd for Bruce Lee to be featured in an MMA game, but while movie Bruce Lee showed us high-flying, high-kicking kung fu, Bruce Lee the founder of Jeet Kune Do emphasized the ability to fight at all ranges, against opponents of any style, and in a pragmatic fashion.) But Bruce Lee the movie star delivered only four completed movies as an adult (though he had a childhood acting career unrelated to Kung fu.) Martial Artist Bruce had only one real fight that anyone knows about and even it remains a subject of great controversy to this day. There are competing claims about who came out on top, to what degree, and how. According to the book, there’s not even much of a sparring record of which to speak.

With the proceeding information in mind, it might not be such a surprise that the author took the tack he did and still produced only the slim volume that he did. Miller’s description of his own life pulls no punches and he spares himself none of the embarrassment incumbent in being a young man seeking to emulate the squealing man with the fists of fury. He doesn’t come across as the narcissist that one might expect from a person who devotes at half of a biography of a global superstar to his own obscure juvenile years. In fact, his profile is of a scrawny kid who got his fair share of wedgies and other bully-induced torments. The autobiographical parts are more homage than self-aggrandizement.

Just as Miller is honest about his own lost pubescence as a scrawny kid, he will win enemies with his frankness about Bruce Lee and those in the gravitational pull of the kung fu superstar. Those who deify Lee will no doubt be displeased to read intimations that he died not on a walk with his wife and from a rare adverse side-effect of a prescription—but non-illicit--drug, and instead died on the bed of a lover from a hash or pot overdose.

Furthermore, Miller tells of how Bruce Lee told his students to stop teaching Jeet Kune Do, because Lee was worried about where it was going. Miller goes on to report about how Bruce Lee’s martial art went awry according to many. Then there is the suggestion that Lee had little first-hand fighting (or sparring) experience on which to build such a combative art in the first place.

However, the overall portrait of Lee is of an exceptional human being, and one who had such a wide range of influence, from fitness to philosophy. While the Bruce Lee physique is now much sought after and regularly seen among movie stars, all the leading men of Lee’s era were doughy by comparison. (One may look no further than his Way of the Dragon nemesis, Chuck Norris.) Lee wasn’t just a movie star and martial artist; he was also a philosopher and thinker. While it’s true that he didn’t produce much in the way of novel ideas, by Hollywood standards he was a regular Algonquin Roundtable member. Lee oozed charisma so powerfully that after all these decades he’s almost as likely to be seen on a T-shirt as Che Guevara—don’t ask me why the Latin American Guerrilla fighter is so popular in silk screen, but that’s beside the point.

To sum it up, this isn’t a book about Bruce Lee, it’s about how his life and death shaped so many other lives—starting with Miller’s. While I didn’t count pages, there seems to be about as much space devoted to the events surrounding Lee’s death as the events of his life. Of course, there’s a bit of sensationalism, but inquiring minds want to know. People are intrigued about how a man who looked to all appearances to be one of the healthiest men on the planet could have died so young. (It’s an interesting irony that Bruce Lee’s almost complete lack of body fat—estimated at under 1%--could well have exacerbated his over-sensitivity to whatever substance killed him.)

I’d recommend this book for anyone curious about the life and death of Bruce Lee.

Bruce And The Truth

The subtitle, A Martial Arts Memoir, describes what this book is really about. It's not a biography about Bruce Lee - though various "facts" and "myths" about him are detailed or debunked. Rather, it's a tale of how Bruce Lee's movies, athleticism, martial arts prowess, focus and determination, philosophy, and larger-than-life persona awoke the dormant soul of a ninety pound weakling. The Tao of Bruce Lee details Davis Miller's transformation from sad, loner, directionless, teenage failure into an accomplished martial artist, writer and, most importantly, vibrant, purposeful human being. The misery of Miller's life before seeing Bruce Lee explode on the screen in Enter the Dragon is, in places, gut-wrenching. But the sadness and despair are replaced by optimism and an the urge to yell, "`atta-boy!" as the young Miller slowly wriggles out of his cocoon. Miller's is a story of possibilities; if he can discover himself, find meaning and contentment in life, anyone can. Beside the quasi-spiritual autobiographical stuff, Miller touches on Bruce Lee's martial arts skills and reputation, his meteoric rise to superstardom, particularly in Asia, the facts surrounding his death and his enduring worldwide impact. There is a lot about Muhammad Ali and comparisons and contrasts between these two very talented men (and what they gave to the world.) Miller brings up Ali so much, one may wonder why he didn't simply write one book, The Tao of Muhammad Ali and Bruce Lee. This book is better on reflection than when actually reading it. I like it more now - and would rate it higher - than I did when I turned the last page this morning. It has a good aftertaste.

beautifully written personal essay and social commentary

First, this is a book that will unfortunately infuriate many of the most extreme Bruce Lee fans, though Davis Miller is very patient and gentle in his regard for Lee. Those of us who are less prone to accept Bruce Lee's martial arts godness are likely to be deeply affected by Miller's own very optimistic story, his commentary about the dangers of religious literalism and his exploration of the nature of myth, as well as Lee's cautionary tale about the myopic downsides of personal ambition. And many people who have had little interest in Lee or his movies will find that they are thoroughly captivated by Miller's storytelling ability and, in the process, they will find that they gain a real-world respect for Bruce Lee. "The Tao of Bruce Lee: a martial arts memoir" is the story of the influence that Lee had on the young Davis Miller and how the more mature Miller outgrew his childhood idol and finally what he calls the "sociopathic prettification of violence." In this way, and others, this book can be compared to the wonderful film, "Breaking Away," the hopeful account of a troubled teenager who is besmitten with the Italian national bicycling team and how, when he finally manages to race them, he is forced to outgrow his simple-minded romance and become his own (much more interesting and capable) person. Miller writes in a style that is accessible and enjoyable to almost every reader, Bruce Lee extremists notwithstanding. This book is an extension of his outstanding first book, "The Tao of Muhammad Ali," and since that book was published in 1996, Miller has grown significantly as a writer. Together, the two books can be seen as the yin and the yang of the same story. "The Tao of Bruce Lee" is a fascinating mix of serious personal essay, new journalism, memoir, and sumptuous old-fashioned storytelling that, in many ways, is unlike anything else that I have read, though Miller himself notes the influences of Joan Didion and Tim O'Brien, among others. And this is every bit as fine a book as Mr. O'Brien's "The Things They Carried" and Ms. Didion's "Slouching Towards Bethlehem," both of which are among the best pieces of American writing of the past half-century. "The Tao of Bruce Lee: a martial arts memoir" is a brave and beautiful book that deserves a large, mainstream audience. I hope that it can somehow manage to find its proper home among discerning readers who care about non-genre literature. Miller's new book easily ranks among the best American writing of this new century.

About the Author
ELLA K. LINDVALL is a mother and former elementary school teacher. She spent 20 years teaching Kindergarten, first, and second grades in Taiwan, the United Arab Emirates, and the United States. Ella is a skilled children¿s editor and writer, and served until retirement as the managing editor for Moody Publishers. Among her many children¿s books are The Bible in Pictures for Toddlers and the acclaimed Read-Aloud Bible Stories series, the first volume of which is an ECPA Gold Medallion winner and C.S. Lewis Honor Book. Ella and her husband, Andrew, reside near Chicago, Illinois.

Amazing storytelling and art work.

The Read Aloud Bible Story series is amazing. If you don't own these and you teach Bible class or have young children, you need the whole set. It is money well spent. I've had these for over 20 years and have used them multiple times. You can tell that the author is a person who has told Bible stories to young children for years. The artwork to go along with the stories is wonderful. Perfect for preschoolers, but even elementary aged children will be engaged with a wonderfully told story.

We have the first four volumes, and they're wonderful, both as read-to stories for little ones and first readers for those who are learning to read. This volume is very different; the stories are in more stilted language and don't make quite as much sense. I was quite disappointed with this volume, but I would highly recommend the first four volumes for kids ages 2-8 (even my 10- and 12-year old enjoy them!)

Little Ones Love Them!

Purchased this book along with the other volumes. I was not sure how my children would take to the books. To my surprise they gravitated to them on the first reading. The size of the book (12in. x 8in.) along with the colorful pages give appeal to the little ones. The biblical messages are geared to toddlers simple yet effective. I recommend this series. Well worth the purchase.
