About the Author
Colin Wrigley’s 54 years in grain-science research have earned him international recognition, in the form of several international and Australian research awards. His work is described in about 600 research publications, including several patents, a series of eight books on Australian cereal varieties and many edited books. He was Editor-in-Chief of the first edition of the Encyclopedia of Grain Science (2004).
His research interests have centred on the characterisation of cereal-grain proteins in relation to processing quality. This has involved developing new methods of protein fractionation, including gel isoelectric focusing and its two-dimensional combination with gel electrophoresis, leading into proteomic mapping. Other diagnostic methods developed relate to the evaluation of grain quality in wheat and barley, such as better methods for variety identification and for characterizing quality in starch and sprouted grain (as co-patentee of the Rapid ViscoAnalyser). Research involvement has also included elucidation of grain-quality variation due to environmental factors (heat stress, fertiliser use, CO2 levels and storage conditions).
In 2009, Dr Wrigley was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) “for service to primary industry, particularly to grain science as a researcher, and to the development of methods for improving wheat quality.”
He is currently an Honorary Professor at the University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia.

Dr. Harold Corke is a professor in the Food and Nutritional Sciences program at The University of Hong Kong, and a Chutian Scholar Distinguished Foreign Professor in the Glyn O. Phillips Hydrocolloid Research Center at HUT, Hubei University of Technology, Wuhan, China. In more than 22 years in Hong Kong, he has had responsibility for teaching a diverse array of food science courses, including the major courses Grain Production and Utilization, Food Safety and Quality Management, Food Product Development, and general education courses Feeding the World, and Food: Technology, Trade and Culture. He is author or co-author of 180 refereed journal articles, and his 22 PhD graduates have gone on to successful careers in academia and industry around the world. He is on the editorial boards of Journal of Food Composition and Analysis, LWT Food Science and Technology and Journal of Cereal Science, and with Colin Wrigley and Chuck Walker was one of the editors of the first edition of Encyclopedia of Grain Science, published in 2004. Dr. Corke is active in consulting in grain processing and food safety in Asia and Eastern Europe.

Dr. Jon Faubion is the Charles Singleton Professor of Baking and Cereal Science in the Department of Grain Science, Kansas State University. Over his 35+ year career, he has had the sole or shared responsibility for teaching 9 different cereal or food science courses at Texas A&M University, The University of Minnesota and Kansas State. In 2011, he received the Excellence in Teaching Award from the American Association of Cereal Chemists International. He is a senior editor of Cereal Chemistry, and a member of the Board of Directors of the American Association of Cereal Chemists International. and an executive editor of Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture. Prior to rejoining the department faculty in 2005, he directed the Applied Technology and Sensory Science Groups for the research and development arm of The Schwan Food Company.

The Man With the Reversible Foot: The Dick Stenbakken Story, by Susan Phelps Harvey

There are moments that teach you to trust in God.

As a young adopted boy, Dick Stenbakken sat alone in a car outside a tavern, wondering if his parents were ever going to come out. It would be one of many moments in his life that would call him to trust his heavenly Father. Years later, as an Army chaplain, that trust would be put to the test in a string of intense encounters, including having a gun pointed straight at him—by an American soldier.

There are moments that make you laugh out loud.

Whether he was pulling pranks on unsuspecting friends, showing off his trick foot that can turn around 180 degrees, or ending up at a honeymoon destination that wasn’t quite what he expected, Dick discovered that life is best when it’s full of laughter and surprises.

There are moments that prove that God has something better for you than you ever imagined.

As he rose in rank and assignment in the military, Dick had unexpected phone calls and encounters that changed his life. In one-on-one relationships and in his work at a Pentagon-level job, he learned that if you want to make a difference in this world, you can.

A life story as unbelievable as his crazy foot!
By Ginger Sayles
I loved this book! The deeper I got into this military hero's story, the faster I wanted to read! With the boatload of contrary childhood issues he had to deal with, it's amazing he rose to such a high level of military responsibility. You've heard of some men so talented they could 'build a shopping mall with a toothpick and some duct tape'? Well, here's your man!
His sense of humor adds fun to this great read. ~ Get it! --but don't plan to accomplish anything else for the day after you curl up with it!

A Great Read
By Joan Waldron
The best first chapter of a book I've read in a long time - with the rest of the book equally as enjoyable. I highly recommend.

No one will be disappointed after reading Susan Harvey's account of this remarkable man
By Bob Murphy
Very well written and edited. Author started with a strong 1st chapter and kept the story-line compelling till a rewarding finish. Only thing that slowed me down was waiting for multiple friends to read and return it before finishing it myself. Most people were "hooked" by the cover. No one will be disappointed after reading Susan Harvey's account of this remarkable man.

Childhood Obesity Prevention: International Research, Controversies and Interventions, by Jennifer A. O'Dea, Michael Eriksen

Childhood obesity is an international public health concern, with a high profile in both the media and government policy. Controversial issues in the prevention of childhood obesity need to be considered early in the development of school, clinical or community prevention programs, as these issues are often the ones that promote the success or failure of attempts to ameliorate the problem at hand.

This book combines health education theory, research, and practice to guide researchers, students, educators, community health workers and practitioners in the prevention of childhood obesity and the promotion of child and adolescent health and well-being. It examines controversy in childhood obesity, including the link with poverty and the difficulty of addressing obesity whilst also tackling the issue of eating disorders. The prevalence of childhood obesity is covered, with international chapters examining the importance of factors such as social class and ethnic differences, and global and local trends are identified. Approaches to prevention are presented, and the book concludes with the successful outcome of various interventions, demonstrating how the whole school community can collaborate to promote health among young people.

Odd Boy Out: Young Albert Einstein, by Don Brown

When he was born in 1879, Albert was a peculiarly fat baby with an unusually big and misshaped head. When he was older, he hit his sister, frustrated his teachers, and had few friends. But Albert’s strange childhood also included his brilliant capacity for puzzles and problem solving: the mystery of a compass’s swirling needle, the intricacies of Mozart’s music, the secrets of geometry—set his mind spinning with ideas. In fact, Albert Einstein’s ideas were destined to change the way we know and understand the world and our place in the universe.
In spare, precise text filled with graceful detail and accompanied by sometimes humorous, sometimes lonely portraits, Don Brown introduces us to the less than magnificent beginnings of an odd boy out. The result is a tender rendering of the adventures of growing up for one of the most important thinkers of the twentieth century.

From School Library Journal
Grade 2-5–This well-crafted picture-book biography focuses on Einstein's hard-to-classify brilliance, which led to awesome scientific discoveries, but all too often left him a misunderstood outsider. Brown describes his subject's loving, cultured parents who were frequently nonplussed by their son's behavior and temper. He found himself the "odd boy" at school, and as the only Jewish student, was sometimes taunted by other children. He puzzled his instructors as well; though clearly gifted in science, math, and music, he was an indifferent student in most subjects. Brown's pen-and-ink and watercolor illustrations, rendered in a palette of dusky mauve and earthy brown, portray a doubtful, somewhat unhappy-looking child, except for a picture in which he gazes fondly at a compass, a gift that astonishes him as he ponders its mysteries. In many scenes he is marginalized on the sidelines, set apart by color and shading. One dramatic spread features an adult Einstein pushing his child in a carriage, looking small against a backdrop that highlights some of the scientific puzzles that so engaged him. Through eloquent narrative and illustration, Brown offers a thoughtful introduction to an enigmatic man. This book will pique the interest of readers with little or no knowledge of Einstein.–Marilyn Taniguchi, Beverly Hills Public Library, CA

From Booklist
Gr. 3-5. Young readers won't come away from Brown's newest picture-book biography understanding the theory of relativity, but they will be heartened by the parallels between their own experiences and those of an iconic science guy. The author-illustrator of Mack Made Movies (2003) and other books presents the future Nobel Prize winner as a sallow, sunken-eyed little boy who lingers on the sidelines as other boys roughhouse, spends hours building a house of cards "fourteen stories high," and vexes his teachers (one tells him that "he would never get anywhere in life"). Brown's language dips into vagueness when it's time to describe the mature scientist's contributions, and the accompanying artwork is often disappointingly generic, awkwardly incorporating computer-generated elements that overwhelm the delicate ink-and-watercolor style used elsewhere. Still, this joins Frida Wishinsky's What's the Matter with Albert? (2002) as one of the very few picture-book biographies of Einstein available. Try giving it to older elementary students, who will get the most out of the detailed author's note and bibliography featuring many books for adults. Jennifer Mattson

Young Albert Einstein
By Ohioan
This book on the young Albert Einstein is filled with fascinating bits of information that make the subject, young Albert, come alive. The art works exceptionally well with the story, capturing the oddity and out-of-place-ness of somebody who is radically different from those around him: in this case, because he's a genius. Still, there's something missing: we learn that Einstein excelled in math and physics, but we never enter his mind to see his thoughts. (Perhaps this isn't possible with a genius, but it leaves me feeling there's something missing in the story.) We are told that E=mc2 is the theory of relativity and then we're told that thanks to Einstein somehow we get automatic door openers, television, and space travel. There's a huge gap between those sentences, a gap that perhaps should be filled with a bit more explanation. Nevertheless, a fascinating story and a book worth reading.

My son carries this book in his backpack
By Lanette
I ordered this book for my son because he has Pervasive Developmental Disorder, he has a hard time fitting in at school and knows he's different. I wanted him to be able to relate to someone he looks up to. He likes learning about Albert Einstein and is always asking me questions about Albert Einsten, so when I found out there was a book for children who are like him I knew I had to purchase this book.
It is made for younger readers, my son is 12 but he is a very immature 12 and hates reading chapter books with no pictures so this worked out.

This book exemplifies the uncertainties and lack of confidence many young children feel about themselves. Yet, this child felt these inadequacies in his growing-up years and evolved into one of the foremost geniuses of our society. This book can offer hope for both children and their parents: the uncertainties of the early years does NOT predict what latent talents could later emerge. I state this unequivocally as a private practice psychotherapist and psychoanalyst for almost 40 years. Read this book to your children!

Playing to Win: How Strategy Really Works, by A.G. Lafley, Roger L. Martin

Are you just playing—or playing to win?

Strategy is not complex. But it is hard. It’s hard because it forces people and organizations to make specific choices about their future—something that doesn’t happen in most companies.

Now two of today’s best-known business thinkers get to the heart of strategy—explaining what it’s for, how to think about it, why you need it, and how to get it done. And they use one of the most successful corporate turnarounds of the past century, which they achieved together, to prove their point.

A.G. Lafley, former CEO of Procter & Gamble, in close partnership with strategic adviser Roger Martin, doubled P&G’s sales, quadrupled its profits, and increased its market value by more than $100 billion in just ten years. Now, drawn from their years of experience at P&G and the Rotman School of Management, where Martin is dean, this book shows how leaders in organizations of all sizes can guide everyday actions with larger strategic goals built around the clear, essential elements that determine business success—where to play and how to win.

The result is a playbook for winning. Lafley and Martin have created a set of five essential strategic choices that, when addressed in an integrated way, will move you ahead of your competitors. They are:

• What is our winning aspiration?
• Where will we play?
• How will we win?
• What capabilities must we have in place to win?
• What management systems are required to support our choices?

The stories of how P&G repeatedly won by applying this method to iconic brands such as Olay, Bounty, Gillette, Swiffer, and Febreze clearly illustrate how deciding on a strategic approach—and then making the right choices to support it—makes the difference between just playing the game and actually winning.

“[Playing to Win]: How Strategy Really Works may be the best business and strategy book I’ve read since Michael Porter. There is plenty of practical advice, including the fact that business people often confuse a vision for a strategy. Instead, the authors claim “winning through distinctive choices is the always-and-forever job of every strategist.” — Jonathan Becher, SAP via Forbes.com

Lafley and Martin have artfully combined two virtues that don't often mix: rigor and brevity. Winning strategy doesn't come from inspirational happy-talk; it comes from deeply substantive hard thinking, and they tell us how it's done, with many examples. The book is short, crisp, a pleasure to read. — Fortune

"Winning through distinctive choices is the job of every strategist"
By Erik Gfesser
The content of this book focuses on the transformation of Procter & Gamble (P&G) between 2000 and 2009, and discusses the approach to strategy that led to this transformation, leading to a doubling of sales, a quadrupling of profits, and an increased share price of more than 80 percent during that decade. The authors discuss that although many good strategic choices were made, the company also had its share of disappointments and failures. And most importantly, "no strategy lasts forever".

In my recent review of "Scenarios: The Art of Strategic Conversation (Second Edition)", by Kees van der Heijden, I mentioned that one of the best takeaways from what the author writes in that book is that "strategy is a highly dynamic area, full of fads and fashions that come and go", and that "copying ideas that 'work' for others is unlikely to be a winning strategy", because "success can only be based on being different from (existing or potential) competitors". The retrospective that Lafley and Martin provide in Appendix A would agree with these conclusions.

As explained by the authors, "strategies need continual improvement and updating", because as the authors have found, "competitors have copied P&G's strategies - on innovation, on branding, and the like - to an extent that renders P&G's resultant strategy less distinctive and decisive", and this is the challenge moving forward. In reflecting on its 175-year-plus history, the authors remark that "winning through distinctive choices is the always-and-forever job of every strategist", and if management continues to search for unique where-to-play and how-to-win choices that set the company apart, they should be able to further the success of the company.

Earlier in the text, the authors explain that many leaders tend to approach strategy in one of the following ineffective ways: (1) they define strategy as a vision, (2) they define strategy as a plan, (3) they deny that long-term (or even medium-term) strategy is possible, (4) they define strategy as the optimization of the status quo, or (5) they define strategy as following best practices. The authors argue that what really matters is winning, and that the play book discussed in this book, which provides five choices, a framework, and a process, is what is needed to win.

According to the authors, strategy is the answer to five interrelated questions: (1) What is your winning aspiration? (2) Where will you play? (3) How will you win? (4) What capabilities must be in place? and (5) What management systems are required? In chapters 2 through 6 of this book, the authors explain the nature of the choices to be made, provide a number of examples of each choice, and offer advice for making the choice given a context. These five choices comprise the "strategic choice cascade", the foundation of their strategy work.

In subsequent chapters, the authors present the "strategic logic flow" framework, designed to direct thinking to the key analyses that inform any strategy, and the "reverse engineering" methodology, designed to make sense of conflicting strategic options. In the former, there are four dimensions to be considered: (1) the industry, (2) customers, (3) relative position, and (4) competition. In the latter, which contrasts with traditional approaches to generating buy-in, there exist seven steps that involve exploring different ways forward and a wider variety of possible strategic choices.

As a consultant, I especially appreciated Chapter 1 ("Strategy = Choice"), which sets the stage by defining what strategy is all about, Chapter 7 ("Thinking Through Strategy"), which walks through industry analysis (segmentation and attractiveness), customer value analysis (channel and end consumers), analysis of relative position (capabilities and costs), and competitor analysis, and Chapter 8 ("Shortening Your Odds"), which explains that what is needed to find a winning strategy is to explore "what would have to be true" rather than "what is true", helping foster teams working together rather than battling one another, and surfacing differences and resolving them.

In addition, I appreciated the "Dos and Don'ts" sections at the end of each chapter, which clearly summarize the material from a practical context, as well as the strategic lessons learned side bars following these sections at the end of most of the chapters. At some level, I find the frankness that the authors share in these sections akin to how David H. Maister talks about his experiences in "Strategy and the Fat Smoker: Doing What's Obvious But Not Easy" (see my review), especially with regard to what Martin has to share at the end of Chapter 8 ("Shortening Your Odds"). Well recommended.

Reads like a pretentious PowerPoint presentation
By Jared Castle
I'm not implying the strategy information is incorrect. I am saying it has a narrow epicenter of interest and those outside Proctor & Gamble and the Rotman School of Management are going to have a rough time staying interested.

In fairness, the book's title should be "P&G: A Look at Corporate Greatness."

I'm interested in winner-take-all strategies but I'm not captivated by overwrought anecdotes about "the P&G diaper business in emerging markets..."

Playing to Win reads like a pretentious PowerPoint presentation. This excerpt from page 125 illustrates my point:

"Why was the Gillette acquisition so successful for P&G? The answer is reinforcing rods; the P&G reinforcing rods drove powerfully through Gillette's activity system, especially in its crown jewel, the male shaving business. Strength in all five core capabilities enabled P&G to add value to the core Gillette business. By bringing Gillette into the P&G portfolio, P&G was able to add real value by sharing and transferring those capabilities."

That's five "P&Gs" and zero executions of "show don't tell."

You can still use it for a drinking game. Take a sip every time you read an acronym.

Use Amazon's preview function and pull up pages 40 and 41. Trust me, you'll be under the table before you reach page 43.

"The essence of strategy is choosing what not to do." -- Michael Porter
By Robert Morris
I am pleased that A.G. Lafley has co-authored another book, with Roger Martin, after previously co-authoring The Game Changer with Ram Charan. Whereas in the first the focus is on how to drive revenue and profit growth with innovation, the focus in this book is on how strategy really works. Most of the time it doesn't and reasons vary. However, Lafley and Martin identify these familiar troublemakers:

1. Defining strategy as a vision
2. Defining strategy as a plan
3. Denying that the long-term (or even the medium-term) strategy is possible
4. Defining strategy as the optimization of the status quo.
5. Defining strategy as following best practices

Rather, Lafley and Martin suggest that a strategy "is a coordinated and integrated set of five choices: a winning aspiration, where to play, how to win, core capabilities, and management systems." In this context, I am reminded of two recently published books. In Judgment Calls, Tom Davenport and Brooke Manville offer "an antidote for the Great Man theory of decision making and organizational performance": [begin italics] organizational judgment [end italics]. That is, "the collective capacity to make good calls and wise moves when the need for them exceeds the scope of any single leader's direct control." In Martin's brilliant book, The Opposable Mind, he calls this "integrative thinking." Winning the game (whatever its nature and extent) would thus require a strategy that is both inclusive and collaborative.

In Paul Schoemaker's latest book, Brilliant Mistakes, he observes: "The key question companies need to address is not `[begin italics] Should [end italics] we make mistakes?' but rather `[begin italics] Which [end italics] mistakes should we make in order to test our deeply held assumptions?'" The mistakes to which Schoemaker refers are deliberate. Their purpose is to help achieve strategic objectives. Those who play to win cannot be risk-averse. That is, play not to lose. If strategy is a set of choices "that uniquely positions the given enterprise so as to create sustainable advantage and superior value relative to the competition," and I believe it is, then quality of judgment is imperative, not only when making a specific choice but throughout a continuous and cohesive decision-making process.

These are among the dozens of passages I found to be of greatest interest and value, also listed to suggest the range of subjects covered during the course of the book's narrative:

o How to Win (Pages 24-29)
o Playing to Win (39-43)
o The Importance of the Right Playing Field, and, Three Dangerous Temptations (57-65)
o Differentiation Strategies (83-88)
o Gillette and the Strategic Choice Cascade (107-112)
o Understanding Capabilities and Activity Systems (112-119)
o Systems for Making and Renewing Strategy (129-136)
o Systems to Support Core Capabilities (144-149)
o Customer Value Analysis (167-171)
o Generating Buy-In: The Traditional Approach (183-200)
o The Importance of the Right Playing Field, and, The Dangerous Temptations Six Strategy Traps, and Six Telltale Signs of a Winning Strategy (214-216)

When concluding their book, A.G. Lafley and Roger Martin acknowledge, "All strategy entails risk. But operating in a slow-growing, fast-changing, intensely competitive world without a strategy to guide you is far riskier. Leaders lead, and a good place to start leading is in strategy development for your business. Use the strategic choice cascade [Pages 17-18 and 33-34], the strategy logic flow [161-177] and reverse engineering of strategic choices [186-200] to craft a winning strategy and sustainable competitive advantage for your organization. Play to win."

No brief commentary such as mine can possibly do full justice to the scope of material that A.G. Lafley and Roger Martin provide in this volume but I hope that I have at least suggested why I think so highly of their book. Also, I hope that those who read this commentary will be better prepared to determine whether or not they wish to read the book and, in that event, will have at least some idea of how an enriched and enlightened understanding of what strategy is -- and [begin italics] isn't [end italics] could perhaps be of substantial benefit to their professional development as well as to the success of their organization.

It depends on what you want
By Pesky Truth
Planet Hulk (PH) has become part of the definitive Hulk story and probably deserves its place. Before purchasing Planet Hulk, I spent quite a bit of time reading the reviews, with special focus on the negative. After buying and reading PH I can say that, yes, there is some truth to the negativity... but that truth was overshadowed by the degree to which I actually enjoyed the experience.

Yes, PH is a completely formulaic and rather predictable story. You are never going to slap your head and shout, REALLY!?!?! I didn't see that coming! If you are the kind of person who needs your story to be completely unpredictable then you should check out NBC's Hannibal - that show always keeps me guessing. PH, on the other hand is simple, straight and familiar. (indeed, you're probably in the wrong genre since comic books are almost exclusively formulaic)

Having said that, however, I still really enjoyed it. There is something about this story, the primal and angry emotion of it, the pure brutal motivation that comes across as sincere and authentic. I cared what happened next and that is far more important to a story than whether or not you know what is coming next. If Amazon ever gets a kindle version of World War Hulk, I'll most likely buy just because of the PH experience.

Disclosure: While I amfmiliar with the Hulk through both the big and small screen, this is the first actual Hulk comic that I have read.

"Never stop making them pay." - The Worldbreaker
By J. A. Atkins
Planet Hulk is a fantastic story arc. The artwork is great and really takes you to that savage planet and its people. The Hulk in this story is the famous or infamous Green Scar or Worldbreaker hulk who truly becomes the hero as the story unfolds. He is not the savage child-like Hulk that comes to mind when you think of the character. This is a Hulk who can think, fight, reason, love, and sacrifice.

If you love a tale of a reluctant hero fighting his way to the top, this story will do it for you. To complete the saga I would get World War Hulk as well, but Planet Hulk is worth it alone.

One of the best tales of the past decade
By Craig Medaris
I'll state it simply first: Planet Hulk is amazing.

This is the story that Hulk had deserved for the longest time and it might just be the finest story arc he's ever had penned for him. Pak's masterpiece succeeds in finding a place where the Hulk vs Banner dynamic becomes a metaphor for the entire story. The anger which lead Hulk to be in this position to begin with is the central focus for a good portion of the story, yet not in the traditionally handled way. "Hulk Smash!" isn't force fed to the reader and yet when it does appear, you can FEEL some of that rage leaking out of the book, so well is the passion conveyed.

Exciting and yet frightening. Humorous, yet touching: Planet Hulk is the supreme Hulk epic and I believe it will stand the test of time. It has managed to redefine the Hulk not only for the modern reader, but really what he has stood for, for the past 50 odd years.

Bravo.
