An excellent review of what makes "Computer Science" a science and how it relates to other sciences. I wish there were a shorter book on "The Scientific Domains" to more broadly introduce the meta-science concepts in this book.

The book attempts to provide a "roadmap" through computing, what it is at its core as well as how it dialogues with other fields, as we are seeing today and as things will emerge in the future. A strong and bold proposal, yet, I think, not unreasonable.

Elizabeth Singer Hunt is originally from New Orleans and now lives in San Francisco. She moved to the UK in 1999 to pursue an MA in Southeast Asian Studies and worked in brand marketing. Inspired by her love of travel and the birth of her son, she created the Jack Stalwart series.

Got my son reading

My son started reading these towards the end of 1st grade. He was reading slightly above grade level. After he finished the Magic Tree House series, nothing else interested him again until he found this at the school book fair. I read the first book and thought it was perfect for him. The second book introduces a little more violence and possibly objectionable stuff (guns and the "bad guy" being a lady, with image of her drawn very bodacious, etc.). I wish she had kept it a little more tame, but that said, it isn't that bad. There's worse out there, and very shortly they are into those books anyway. I love that the main character travels all over the world and the kids learn something about various places. Reminds me of Magic Tree house in that respect.

My son is in first grade and has recently fallen in love with the Jack Stalwart books. These books have a super hero agent with lots of cool gadgets. He travels all over the globe. The stories are full of true, geographical information the reader about the areas that Jack travels to. We have started marking the places on our wall map and writing notes about the special things that happen there. These are great books!!!

Good Book, Could be more Explanatory

The book is well-written and Ruth Levine definitely chooses great case studies / examples of global health issues to present. My one complaint is that I'd like a little bit more information about how and exactly what was done by each of the governments in each case - essentially, just a bit more depth.

Mike Lawrence is concerned less with how to play your hand than with how to think about playing. The idea is to minimize risk by deducing where your opponent's high cards are. Lawrence shows how to spot and interpret clues from the opening bid on with chapters titled "Sizing Up the Case," "Finding the Witness," "Analyzing the Clues," "Conducting the Investigation," "Checking the Evidence," "Nailing Down the Case," and "Making Your Sixth Sense Work." The latter deals with watching your opponent's body language for the "tells" that reveal their thoughts involuntarily. Each chapter but the last features a quiz section to help you practice techniques.

Mike Lawrence has been writing about home improvement for over 25 years, contributing articles regularly to all the major magazines in this field. For those who want to become strong bridge players

It takes a fair amount of work and effort to apply the techniques presented in this book. But it's time well spent. If you can master these skills you will be a very good club player. Be aware that its slow going as you have to follow every card play and think about whats going on.
Why didnt the West lead hearts when he opened 1 Heart? Hmmm, probably because West doesn't have AK or KH, so the honors are split. That means East has 3 or 4 high card points. Since East already showed up with teh Queen of clubs, its liekly he's empty, else he would have raised Wests 1 heart opener. Therefore take the finesse against Wests Queen of Diamonds.
The amazing thing is after a while I was able to play almost every honor in all the hands.
This works, just takes effort to apply it. Spend your tiem counting HCP, and distributions, and you will become a solid player. You don't have to study 5 books on Sqeezes, 8 books on bidding, etc. Concentrate on the basics and you will greatly improve.

MUST-READ book

Mike Lawrence is one of the most intelligent authors I have ever read (and I read a lot). This is also one of his better-organized and readable books (surprisingly his first book). Reading this book will teach you how to think at the table. Counting is a skill that separates the novice from the expert, and this book goes a long way towards teaching you that vital skill. This book is among my three favorite Mike Lawrence books, the other two being "Play Bridge with Mike Lawrence", and "Play a Swiss Teams of Four With Mike Lawrence". Another vital skill taught here is deduction. A simple but very useful example: as declarer if you are missing AK of a side suit, and the opening lead is something else, then either the opening leader is missing both cards or the honors must be split, else the A or K would be the natural lead (assuming neither defender has bid).

Mike Lawrence doesn't teach rules to memorize; he schools his reader in beneficial habits and patterns of thought. After reading this book (repeatedly, gaining added benefit each time), my opponents began to think we were playing bridge with glass cards.

Lee has come under attack in recent years for overstating his contributions to the comic book field and for the failure of his Internet company, Stan Lee Media. This book offers something of a rebuttal, with Lee crediting his creative partners fully and portraying himself as a victim in his company's failure. With the success of Michael Chabon's The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay, which traces the early days of the comic book industry, and the motion picture, Spider-Man, interest in the creation of the comic book industry has increased. A must read for Marvel and comic fans

If you are interested in the Marvel universe or comic publication in general, this is a must read. Entertaining, easy to read, full of amusing comments by Stan Lee and insight into the evolution of the superhero comic world. I remember my grandmother paying me to get rid of all my comics and promise not to read anymore some 55 years ago (that only lasted about a year) and was interested to see that coincided with a public campaign against comics which fortunately was not successful. This is the text version, not the new graphic formatted and more recently updated version recently released.

Good for kids who love their comics. My son was 14 when I bought it and he is in love with Stan Lee. Not too many pages but for th price it I worth it I think. Good quality too actually. It does not look cheap.

I have completed my review of the book. It is an excellent concept. The interactive nature of the assignments and use of DVD is great. I believe today's law student will be better equipped with practical skills. It is a great modernization of evidence that should have made Irving Younger proud. The legal profession is a great one; not just a job. Unfortunately, new attorneys have little opportunity to learn to try a case at the law firm level. New attorneys who can demonstrate they have the mechanics of trying a case are better positioned to succeed in today's legal climate.

About the Author

Barry A. J. Fisher served as the crime laboratory director for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, a position he held from 1987 until his retirement in 2009. He is a Distinguished Fellow and past president of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences and was awarded the Academy’s highest award, the Gradwohl Medallion. He served as president of the International Association of Forensic Sciences, president of the American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors, and is a past chairman of the American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors―Laboratory Accreditation Board. He has lectured throughout the United States, Canada, England, Australia, Singapore, France, Israel, Japan, China, Turkey, and Portugal on forensic science laboratory practices, quality assurance, and related topics. In 2000, he led a forensic science delegation to lecture to forensic scientists in the People’s Republic of China. Since retiring, Fisher has consulted for the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, the United States Department of Justice, International Criminal Investigative Training Program (ICITAP), and Analytic Services Inc.

David R. Fisher currently works as a criminalist supervisor in a large public forensic laboratory in New York City. He has worked on hundreds of homicide, sexual assault, and property crime cases and has testified in court and in the grand jury as a DNA expert on numerous occasions. Fisher is certified by the American Board of Criminalistics and is a Fellow in the American Academy of Forensic Sciences. He also maintains membership in the International Association for Identification, the Northeastern Association of Forensic Scientists and is an associate member in the International Association of Bloodstain Pattern Analysts. Fisher also has much experience in mass fatality incidents. After the events of 9/11, he helped with the identifications of victims from the World Trade Center attack. As an intermittent federal employee with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Disaster Mortuary Operational Response Team (DMORT), he was deployed to the Gulf region in 2005 to aid in the identification of victims from Hurricane Katrina.
