I can't believe this book was written by Nora Roberts

The stories, and especially the dialogues, are absolutely ridiculous. The only redeeming and worthwhile parts were the vividly described, luscious settings.

1. Song of the West: The description off the back cover is so inaccurate it's like they are talking about a totally different story. For example, I wonder what dream Jake was trying to seduce Samantha into giving up for him?

Samantha came to Wyoming to look after her pregnant twin sister, who was on medically prescribed bedrest. While she was there she fell in love with the wide-open spaces, the country air, and the lifestyle on the Wyoming ranch. She wanted to remain in Wyoming permanently, but what made it impossible to stay was that she also fell in love with the rancher next-door. She thought he was committed to a more sophisticated woman, and she couldn't bear to stay while he made a homelife with someone else, so she decided to leave as soon as possible. (The opposite of what the back cover says) It's hard to imagine that someone as strong and as self-sufficient as Samantha would walk away from the challenge of another woman being interested in the man she loved.

One thing I find very annoying in romance novels is incessant and unnecessary bickering between the characters, supposedly representing sexual tension or a conflict. Samanatha started off as a giving and unselfish woman, yet I was immediately turned off by her antagonistic and hostile reaction to Jake. Yes, he was very flirtatious, but definitely not the arrogant condescending playboy he is made out to be, and Samantha seemed to overreact in such a silly negative way to his charm. In the end, Jake became quite aggresive in his pursuit of her, but quite frankly it was a welcome break in the plot, and the only way he'd get through her stubborness and they'd finally come together and resolve their conflict.

2. Her Mother's Keeper: I enjoyed this story a little more than the first one, and at least the back cover described it accurately. I found the entire concept upon which the story is based, that Gwen left her job in NY and came home to New Orleans to break up an assumed affair (which turned out to be unfounded) between her 47 year old mother and a 35 year old writer, to be totally proposterous. Why should this bother her, and what business it is of hers???

With the same annoying bickering as in the above story, Gwen immediately responded to Luke with undeserved harsh animosity, judging him without knowing anything about him, or having the facts straight. Gwen was so quick to assume the worst about him (she was also too quick to have sex with him, especially while proclaiming to dislike him so much). Luke summed it up best when he told Gwen that one day, she just might be the woman her mother is, one who looks for the good in everyone and finds it.

This is Nora Roberts??

I bought this book because I like to read everything that Nora Roberts writes. I have read some of her early books, and have enjoyed them. However, if you've read any of Nora's books, you would hardly believe she wrote these. The other reviews are accurate. The heroines are not even likeable--they are silly and tempermental. How can anyone fall in love with them?? The heroes are inscrutable--so much so, that when they proclaim their love for the heroine on the last page, the heroine is shocked! No wonder, because they don't act like men in love, they act live cavemen ready to drag the woman off to the cave and "ravish" her. These stories are so old fashioned, they seem like they were written 30 or 40 years ago, not 20 years ago. I still can't believe that I am giving Nora Roberts (my favorite author) a "1" star review!

I am sure that Nora Roberts fans will enjoy this collection of her earlier works..both storys have been previously published in the early 1980's but show the promise that Nora Roberts has as a write.

The first story is "Song of the West"--Samantha is staying in Wyoming to care for her pregnant twin sister Sabrina. During her stay on Sabrina's ranch, she meets next door rancher Jake Tanner. Samantha is attracted to the Wyoming area, the horses and the ranch, but especially to Jake. But she holds back, because she believes that Jake is a womanizer and already almost engaged to a local girl. Samantha is written very well and likable, but Jake comes across as somewhat a male chauvenist--its hard to root for them as a couple.
The second story is "Her mother's Keeper". Gwen comes home to Louisiana to save her mother from her newest houseguest, author Luke Powers. Gwen mistakenly thinks that her mother and Luke are involved and is determined to get Luke our of her mother's life. Poor Gwen is instantly attracted to Luke and confused about her feels for him and her disloyalty to her mother. This book is much more interesting due to the relationships between the two women, Luke and Gwen and even Luke and Anabel (Gwen's mother). Its easy to understand why Gwen has a hard time seeing her mother as a person.
All in all, I am glad that I read this book. It gives us a glimpse of the potential that Nora Roberts had as a writer, even in her early works. She is at her best in defining relationships--and that shows in these storys.

The author of the sex guide She Comes First and the "dating doctor" for Lifetime TV, Kerner takes up the cause of "Sex and the City" women everywhere, urging ladies to dump the "in-the-meantime" men and raise their standards on the husband hunt. Kerner's book will appeal to the chick lit audience, with his sassy quizzes and blunt language, as when he writes that women settle on a mediocre boyfriend because "they like having their egos and (and lower parts) stroked." How unfortunate, then, that Kern's logic is often so sloppy. Can it really always be true, as he writes, that being married "is harder than being single, even in the best of circumstances" or that "If women were really disposed to have sex like men, they'd be greater consumers of porn and prostitution"? The book equivocates in trying to promote sexual freedom while encouraging emotional responsibility, and all the laugh lines don't quite hide the fact that the entire book's wisdom is essentially contained in the subtitle. A final chapter, written jointly by Kerner and his wife, does stand out for its personality and wit. Here's hoping they team up for a whole book next time. Meanwhile, this one's sure to do brisk business among singletons.

Wake up and smell your SELF EMPOWERMENT

This book kicks "He's not that into You" firmly in the crotch. Thank the Good Lord that someone finally did.

The first chapters explain why it's a bad idea for women to have casual sex. DUH!!! For me and my friends, this is as true as the sky is blue. Having sex like a man is a myth. I cannot fathom why people are watching "Sex and the City" and believing it. Ian Kerner, the author, explains in scientific terms why it's not likely for women to have sex that is casual as well as enjoyable. He goes into hormones, the way other mammals act, etc. This book suggests that having "sex like a man" is UN-empowering, despite what your local commando feminist might say.

Note to the audience: For those readers who are squeamish about sex and masturbation, the first couple of chapters are going to be uncomfortable. If you're not having sex, this book is probably not useful for you. Also, if you have problems finding a guy, this book is not for you. However, if you find that you are dating guys that you're not that into, this book is for you. Also, if you're a parent and your daughter is going away to college, I'd recommend this book for your daughter. It might keep her away from the frat houses. Believe me, it happens, and it's better for her to get a good whiff of reality before she is out on her own.

The second and third couple of chapters explain why you should not seriously date someone who you're not that into. I don't think that these chapters are as good as the first, but I identify with dating people who I am not that into. It's a waste of time. You know from the very beginning that you're not going to marry them, and spending time by yourself is so much more enjoyable and empowering.

Overall, I think that this book is a four star book, but I am giving it five simply because it kicks some butt.

A Must-Read for Single Women...

I picked up this book yesterday and couldn't put it down. I just wish it had come out sooner -- like when I started my downward spirial of dating guys that I wasn't that into when I graduated from college.

The book is easy-to-read and funny. Forget "The Rules." This book provides useful, non-preachy advice. For some funny reason, I felt like Dr. Kerner was cheering me on from the sidelines. Definitely worth buying. Don't judge this one by the picture on its cover....

Everything you need to know about FinTech innovation and Robo-advisory

The author goes into great detail explaining all there is to know about Robo-Advisory and the future of digital wealth management. To clarify the points made, there are many graphs and illustrations throughout the book and for those who are interested, there are many mathematical formulas detailing various theories relating to "goal based investing" and portfolio balancing. The most interesting observation made by the author is that wealth management has progressed from the exclusive advisory for the select few UHNW (ultra-high-net-worth), to discount and online brokerage for the mass affluent and now digital wealth management comprisimg all investors from UHNW, mass-affluent as well as the average retail investor. The book is very well structured, details all the intricate aspects of digital wealth management and also gives the reader a glimpse into the future of FinTech and Robo-Advisory. Highly recommended reading for anyone interested in the future of digital investing and personal wealth management.

A good book but it didn't impress me

I am enlightened by a few points the author made in this book, such as the potential of robo-technology disintermediate ETF providers, gamification for educational purpose, and the author's in-depth coverage on goal based investing.

However, I still find most of the contents in this book very familiar to me already.

Another thing I like less is that certain views are expressed repeatedly in this book and the wording is not concise enough, so certain parts did not quite engage me.

This is a good book for people who don't know much about robo-technology in investment and want to get an overview, but it may seem less helpful to those who already have some knowledge of robo-technology.

While the relationship across the Taiwan Strait remains critically important, it is also changing rapidly, and the chapters in this volume present new thinking to help make sense of complex cross-Strait dynamics. Specifically, these essays explore different security and/or globalization dimensions of China-Taiwan ties as well as the globalization-security linkages that have emerged. As the balance of power in Asia shifts dramatically, several chapters in this volume explore how traditional security forces are evolving. At the same time, there are new dynamics emerging as a consequence of globalization forces, such as the tremendous economic and social integration across the Taiwan Strait, and several chapters in this volume consider some of these new problems. Finally, several chapters consider the often under-researched dynamics associated with the globalization/security interface such as cyber threats, transnational criminal networks and the security spill-over impact of production globalization.
