About the Author
John J. Coyle is currently director of corporate relations for the Center for Supply Chain Research and professor emeritus of logistics and supply chain management in the Smeal College of Business at Penn State University. He holds a BS and MS from Penn State and earned his doctorate from Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana, where he was a U.S. Steel Fellow. He joined the Penn State faculty in 1961 and attained the rank of full professor in 1967. In addition to his teaching responsibilities, he has served in a number of administrative positions, including department head, assistant dean, senior associate dean, special assistant for strategic planning to the university president, and executive director of the Center for Supply Chain Research. He also served as Penn State's faculty representative to the NCAA for 30 years and to the Big Ten for 10 years. Dr. Coyle was the editor of the Journal of Business Logistics from 1990 to 1996. He has authored or coauthored 20 books or monographs and numerous articles in professional journals. He has received 14 awards at Penn State for teaching excellence and advising. In addition, he received the Council of Logistics Management's Distinguished Service Award in 1991; the Philadelphia Traffic Club's Person of the Year Award in 2003; and the Eccles Medal from the International Society of Logistics for his contributions to the Department of Defense and the Lion's Paw Medal from Penn State for Distinguished Service, both in 2004. Dr. Coyle currently serves on the boards of three logistics and supply chain service companies and on the Advisory Board of the NLDC and continues to be active in teaching in the Executive Education Programs at Penn State.

C. John Langley Jr. is clinical professor of supply chain management in the Smeal College of Business at Penn State University and also serves as director of development in the Center for Supply Chain Research. Previously, he served as the John H. Dove professor of supply chain management at the University of Tennessee and the SCL professor of supply chain management at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Dr. Langley is a former president of the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals and a recipient of the Council's Distinguished Service Award. He has been recognized by the American Society of Transportation and Logistics as an honorary distinguished logistics professional for his long-term contributions and continuing commitment to the transportation logistics community, and he is a recipient of the Outstanding Alumnus Award from Penn State's Business Logistics Program. Dr. Langley received his BS degree in mathematics, MBA in finance, and Ph.D. in business logistics, all from Penn State University. Dr. Langley has coauthored several books, including Supply Chain Management: A Logistics Perspective. Also, he is lead author of the annual Third Party Logistics Study and recently completed the 2016 20th Annual 3PL Study. His research publications have appeared in journals such as the Journal of Business Logistics, International Journal of Physical Distribution and Logistics Management, International Journal of Logistics Management, Supply Chain Management Review, and Land Economics. Dr. Langley serves on the Boards of Directors of UTi Worldwide, Inc., Forward Air Corporation, and Averitt Express, Inc., in addition to several involvements on academic advisory boards to logistics organizations. He also participated as a member of the Program Faculty for the K�hne Logistics University in Hamburg, Germany, currently serves as education advisor for NASSTRAC.

Robert Novack is an associate professor of supply chain management in the Department of Supply Chain and Information Systems at Penn State University. From 1981 to 1984 he worked in operations management and planning for the Yellow Freight Corporation in Overland Park, Kansas, and from 1984 to 1986 he worked in planning and transportation at Drackett Company in Cincinnati, Ohio. Dr. Novack's numerous articles have been published in such publications as the Journal of Business Logistics, Transportation Journal, and International Journal of Physical Distribution and Logistics Management. He also is a coauthor of Creating Logistics Value: Themes for the Future. Active in the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals, he has served as overall program chair for the annual conference, as a track chair, and as a session speaker as well as a member of numerous committees. Dr. Novack holds the CTL designation from AST&L and is a member of WERC. He earned a BS degree and an MBA in logistics from Penn State University and a Ph.D. in logistics from the University of Tennessee.

Brian J. Gibson is executive director of the Center for Supply Chain Innovation and the Wilson Family Professor of supply chain management at Auburn University. Previously, he served on the faculty of Georgia Southern University and as a logistics manager for two major retailers. He has received multiple awards for outstanding teaching, research, and outreach. Gibson's research has been published in the Journal of Business Logistics, International Journal of Logistics Management, International Journal of Physical Distribution and Logistics Management, Supply Chain Management Review, Supply Chain Quarterly, and other leading publications. He is coauthor of Transportation: A Supply Chain Perspective, author of the electronic textbook Supply Chain Essentials, and lead author of the annual State of the Retail Supply Chain Report. Dr. Gibson serves as SCPro certification chair and board member for the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals, education advisor for NASSTRAC, and supply chain steering committee member for the Retail Industry Leaders Association. Dr. Gibson earned a BS from Central Michigan University, an MBA from Wayne State University, and a Ph.D. in logistics and transportation from the University of Tennessee.

The Circus-1870 to 1950

I own many circus books and i was advised about this one is a must.
For a $200 circus book it better be great one and the waters better part.
When it arrived I was amazed at the size and the weight of it. Then i open it up and it was like the land of Oz going from black and white to TECHNICOLOR.
In all my life I have never seen a book printed like this with all those beautiful color photos of the circus. Where ever they got those photos they are the best I have even seen in any book.
The WOW factor and it is just amazing book.
It is a must for the circus collector.
I am so glad I got a copy and it is worth every penny of the price.

More than a novelty

Whilst by size this may be considered a novelty item and of particular interest to students of American Circus this has much more value than that. The oversize format and use of fold out pages presents an opportunity to display visual reproductions which otherwise would not be possible on this scale. Of particular interest to me was the presentation of items from very early circus history. This must have been a mamouth publishing enterprise with some commercial risk considering the total scope of the circus book reading customer base but the contributors and publishers must be complemented upon the finished product.

Not one to read in bed but a valuable addition to the collections of those interested in circus and visual presentation.

You have to see it

This is a huge book. This coffee table book is too big for the coffee table. Buy two and you have a coffee table. It's a heavy book - you can't red it bed. You can't read it waiting at the airport, on the train or the bus. They don't build bookcases in this size. It's freak book. But it's also a beautiful book. Most circus books can be put in one of two categories - books about particular circuses /circus dynasties or books about the life in circus. This book is in a category of it's own - it describes the circus as an important factor in the development of the American popular culture. The picture material is beautiful but the text, in three languages, is even better. It's easy to make this oversized publication to a laugh matter. But it's also a really good buy if you are interested in circus and popular culture. You get a lot of book for your money - $ 6.90/pound or $ 2.3/square yard. Buy it.

Born in Coventry, once the heart of the British motor industry, Brian Long is a professional writer with a passion for vintage and sporting machinery. A trained mechanical engineer and a long-term owner of both an SL and SLC, he has had a strong connection with Daimler-Benz products for over two decades. He has over 50 books published, including many works on German marques.

Great comprehensive guide to the R and C107

This book is an extremely comprehensive review of the 107 series, from its inception, details about the car, its changes over the years and successor. This book is not a buyers guide, so buy it if you're interested in the car, not looking to buy one. It also covers the rally cars etc.

I would also add that it is written from a worldwide point of view which is great - so many of these Mercedes books are very USA model centric - this book take a very comprehensive worldwide view. On the downside, there are some inaccuracies for the Australian spec models which were different to the USA ones (e.g. no CAT until 1986), but overall the book is very good.

The book also contains information about product numbers and specs for each year. These are spread throughout the narrative instead of being in table form for comparisons.

Some things get better with age.Brain Long Who lives with his wife in Japan has long been a Mercedes-Benz enthusiast and owner of the R107 Coupe 450SLC and the 450SL touring sports car. With his connections to Mercedes-Benz archives comes a new book revealing the birth of this model, a transfer of the W113 SL Pagaoda
from 1963 to 1989 and perhaps the longest running SL produced in Mercedes-Benz history 18 year, so you can expect a lot of small to big changes before the mold's got thin. today these are considered the next young classic from Mercedes-Benz.

Brain Long goes into much detail both mechanical and also add some history that happened during the periods of time so you don't get board. there is much to learn from his research. I will lease it to you to decide.included are different color codes and upholstery for each year with a bi line of information that grabs at you. This is a book that has to be read like drinking fine wine . you can not take it all in at once because their is so much to be learned till the last of the 560SL and classic SLC coupes.

If you are a fan of the SL Sports car in august of this year will debut another book on the W113 SL Pagaoda 230SL ,250SL ,and some touches on the 280LS. own them both and you can instantly tell you neighbors what and how and why about their car , that will stop them in their tracks. may Be even get them to buy
another before the prices zoom up again. with so many build looking for orginal ones is a challenge . they are out there and command the same no less price when new if keep in pristine condition .they are also an excellent car for your son or daughter going off to college. Build like a tank safety was the primary focus on this car so having one as an enjoyable summer car with the hard top removed.

This is a "must have" book for any owner or person interested in the R107 series Mercedes SL's. Book was in new condition and it's an enjoyable read, whether you are a long time Mercedes owner and familiar with the marque or a newbie getting interested.

Beyond the Frontiers - A genetic approach to the Brand

As the Chief Technical Officer of a Texas based e-services and print communication firm, I live in this interactive brandspace on a daily basis. The problem with this brave new world of pixels is simply that much is said and much is written but little intelligent communication occurs. I find the innovative and far reaching approach taken by Michael Moon to be the de facto foundation for the next "big thing".
The approach that one must take to these new media spaces and channels is not readily discernible from the clearly defined trails blazed in the more traditional areas of branding. This new territory is as different as the Earth is from the Moon [no pun intended]. The book travels beyond the areas marked as "unknown - there be dragons here" and opens a clear and understandable path into formerly mysterious areas.
What we need out here in the field is less hype and more substance. Firebrands is a rational, ground breaking treatise on the evolution of Branding. This is a pivotal work that serves as a wonderful deskside companion, as indispensible to me as my spell checker or my browser.
Michaels' best practices mental evolution from the time of the Jeff Martin led Digital Brand Building Seminars of the mid-90's to this opus show an extraordinary depth and breadth of thought and research . The Firebrands book is the Gray's Anatomy of Brand "science".
As my company moves forward with ground breaking, market defining services in the area of brand guaranty we will continue to consult the Firebrands roadmap. We anxiously await any follow-up materials that might come from this mind trust.
Be warned - this is not a shallow pop-business, executive book of the hour read. This is a genetic level approach to a new mindset. It must be read slowly, deliberately, and with a totally open mind. Setting your brand on fire.

There are so many books on the market that discuss the concept of 'brand' from so many different points of view, that it's difficult to sort out the good from the bad. This is one of the good ones.
Moon and Millison define the basic concepts around brand. They explain in clear buzzword-light language what influences the growth and positioning of a brand. Finally, they provide ample and well-explained pointers to further reading to help understand some of their basic ideas more clearly.
As a consultant working for a systems integrator, one of the things that impressed me the most was the focus on execution. Many books about branding seem to imply that the technical details are irrelevant to brand success, but _Firebrands_ makes the point that a relationship with a customer only has brand value when supported by appropriate policies, training, and technical infrastructure. This is a message that can't be, IMO, repeated often enough.
Well worth the time to read.

A good, engaging read

I loved this book, and I'm definitely going to buy the other books in the series. I definitely think that anyone who's looking for a book or series with a bit of adventure, a bit of romance, and some fantasy or science fiction will enjoy this book.

And I know some people thought that the author had a purpose in writing this book and that there was too much emphasis on the sonar used by the Navy, things like that. Honestly, maybe she did have a specific purpose, but I really didn't mind. To me, it just seemed like part of the story as they tried to find the cause of the 'comas'.

Bleh, everything I write sounds wrong. But yes, I recommend this book

A great Y/A summer read. Cami is sixteen and she lives on an island which has swimming and surfing contests every year, which brings tourists and star atheletes to Pin hold. She is falling in love with her best friends Brother. When injuries disrupt the races and an unknown illness shatters her world. Cami is determined to find a cure for her brother and her friends. She must discover what makes her island unlike anywhere else on Earth. A truly orginal story. The culture of Pinhold is connected to the pods of Dolphins that surround the island. There are also a lot of twins on the island.I truly enjoyed this book it reinforced the importance of relationships. A wonderfully written coming of age story filled with love, laughs and plenty of action. I highly recommend for all ages Y/A TO aDULT READERS.

Clicks is different from anything I have ever read. It has a fresh and new storyline that I really enjoyed. Amy Evens done a great job with this book. It is well written and has a easy to follow storyline. Clicks has twist and turns and a great adventure with a huge mystery that is hanging over them. About the Author
Sid Redner is a condensed-matter theorist whose research focuses on non-equilibrium statistical physics and its applications. Dr Redner has been on the physics faculty at Boston University since 1978 and has been a full professor since 1989. He has published 230 research articles and is the author of A Kinetic View of Statistical Physics with P. L. Krapivsky and E. Ben-Naim (Cambridge University Press, 2010). Dr Redner is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and was a visiting scientist at Schlumberger Research in 1984-1985, the Ulam Scholar at Los Alamos National Laboratory in 2004-2005 and a visiting professor at the Universite Paul Sabatier (Toulouse) and Universite Pierre et Marie Curie (Paris) in 2008.

Gamblers' ruin problems...

... formulated both discretely and continuously. Sidney Redner provides us with a stimulating and masterful treatment of first passage times from the standpoint of traditional statistical physics. This is both the strength and weakness of his attractive book. What's lacking is a systematic formulation with simple examples continuous in (x,t) that the reader can solve for herself. The formulation of the hitting probability for the simplest diffusion problem (the Wiener process) as a problem in electrostatics (pg. 24) is nice but woefully incomplete and inadequate, and is related to Durrett's ('Brownian Motion and Martingales in Analysis', 1984) attempts to formulate potential problems via Brownian motion averages using stopping times. What's missing in Redner's electrostatics approach can be found in Stratonovich's "Topics in the Theory of Random Noise" Vol. I: the use of Kolmogorov's backward time diffusion pde to calculate the average stopping time for general time translational invariant diffusion problems with variable drift and diffusio coefficients. And see Steele's "Stochastic Calculus" for a formulation of hitting times (stopping times) using Martingales formulated via Ito calculus and stochastic differential equations. Steele provides many interesting and instructive examples, including a simple calculation ofthe average stopping time for Wiener processes with and without drift (the Durrett-Steele Ito approach is much shorter than Stratonovich's Fokker-Planck method, and both approaches are instructive). Actually, Durrett (1984) shows assigns the most general method as 2 exerecises on pg. 255: to calculate the average hitting time by constructing a martingale that leads to solving the same backward tiome pde as Stratonovich, but for the general case of (x,t) dependent drift and diffusion coefficients!

an engaging survey of first-passage processes

An engaging survey of first passage time processes, highlighting interesting consequences, such as the nonmonotonic behavior of stochastic resonance and the application of first-passage methods to efficient simulation of diffusion-limited aggregation. The book assumes familiarity with diffusion, generating functions, Laplace transforms and asymptotics. Readers without that background will struggle with the derivations, but can appreciate the results. For example, the connection between discrete random walks and continuous diffusion are stated without much motivation in section 1.3.3. The provided references are good for mathematically oriented readers. Others could benefit from a more elementary presentation, e.g., Random Walks in Biology.

The book occasionally mentions significant extensions without even briefly describing their consequences. This is unfortunate since extensions such as the Orstein-Uhlenbeck process apply widely, e.g., to neuron models mentioned in the text as well as to finance (where an extended discussion would connect nicely with the stock market example described on the first page of the book).

The book is well-organized, but the index lacks common alternate names for processes mentioned in the text, such as "integrated Brownian motion", "Orstein-Uhlenbeck process" and "partially absorbing boundary condition".

The book would benefit from a summary of results to highlight in one place the relationships among the applications. Surveying open problems would make an interesting conclusion to this summary. The book could also use a table of notation, particularly since transforms are indicated by the name of arguments: e.g., for a discrete random walk, P(k,t) denotes the Fourier transform of the occupation probability P(n,t) to be at site n at time t, instead of the occupation probability at a different location k. This notation for transforms is handled consistently, but may confuse casual readers.

The more complicated derivations (not shown in the text) rely on Mathematica. It would be helpful to make the Mathematica files available on the book's web site so interested readers could see the details. The 2007 paperback edition has several pages of errata (which, surprisingly, are more recent than the list on the book's web site). While this list is helpful, it requires constantly checking while reading. I was surprised that the paperback edition did not correct the text.

Truly a great teacher

I took advanced statistical physics from Professor Redner (the author) and highly recommend this book. He is without a doubt one of the best teachers I have ever had.
