A great book on how to think and go about studying mathematical problems

I have Polya's other book "How to Solve It", and this is a wonderful follow-up to that. It goes to great lengths explaining how to reason about mathematical problems and questions by giving several examples (e.g. questions about prime numbers, geometry, &c) and this is the great strength of the book: it is based on very many good examples of mathematical and physics questions and the author does a great job of using them to explain his point. Great book (paperback), great printing, binding, content and all. Highly recommended if you enjoyed "How to Solve It" and is looking for more.

Her study shows why both supply-side and demand-side forces are leading parties to offer party members more, and more meaningful, opportunities to participate in party decisions. They also lead parties to offer new and lower-cost modes of affiliation. These changes are producing Multi-speed Membership Parties, ones that offer supporters multiple ways to connect with a party. Beyond Party Members examines the consequences of these ongoing transformations for political parties, and for the democracies in which they compete.

Wonderfully simple and sweet

This is a wonderfully compact introduction to the basic concepts of Artifical Intelligence. You probably aren't going to be able to go and write your own AI after reading this but at least you'll have enough background to read a more detailed text and some of the scientific literature out there. If you've picked up other AI books and felt lost then start here, you won't regret it.

Superficial - for better or worse

Target Reader: If you don't know anything about AI and are looking to understand how the problem space has traditionally be divided this is a good book to start with. After reading this book you'll have a feeling for the major problems and the vocabulary associated with their solutions. If you have any formal AI background you should skip this book.

Anecdotal Description: I would say this book is clearly rooted in the pre AI winter era with a major slant towards strong AI. It is largely silent on the recent big data weak AI machine learning movement. (If that is meaningful to you I'd look at a different book.)

Next Steps / Alternatives: If you accept my premise about the books contents I'd suggest considering three additional or alternative books.
- Introduction to Artificial Intelligence: Second, Enlarged Edition is similar but in much greater depth for those who are primarily interested in the computer science angle to AI.
- Artificial Intelligence: A Philosophical Introduction is also a "kick back and flip pages" style book for those more interested in the philosophical angle on AI.
- For those interested in the cognitive science angle I'm less confident on a recommendation but I've heard good things about The Emotion Machine: Commonsense Thinking, Artificial Intelligence, and the Future of the Human Mind

More Advanced Books:
- Paradigms of Artificial Intelligence Programming: Case Studies in Common Lisp Pure gold for those interested in actually building strong AI and anyone interested in Lisp.
- Artificial Intelligence: A Modern Approach (3rd Edition) A recently updated classic, deserving of its status as the gold standard but a tedious textbook read.
- Artificial General Intelligence (Cognitive Technologies) (Full disclosure I'm reading this one now so this is an incomplete opinion...) This is really the odd man out and belongs somewhere between these two lists. Unlike Norvig's book and like those on the first list read this book leaning back and flipping the pages. That said it is a good bit more advanced than anything on the top list. It is very current and a great refresh on the fundamentals for those with some background.

Bottom Line: If you are totally new to AI and looking for a quick place to start I'd recommend this book.

This book a a great starting point for studying Artificial Intelligence. For those with a Computer Science background, the book is a quick read that will show how theories such as data structures and search algorithms apply to the different areas of AI. IF you love Christie, or Rinehart, you'll love this book too!

I'm so happy to see some of the great works of Anna Katherine Green; she has become one of my favorite writers, after I ran out of Christie's books to read. I found out that Agatha Christie, got into writing after reading Greens' books, who was a bestselling author who publishing about 40 books.

I read she was first poet and later became a novelist to get attention to her poetry, however, she was so successful at mystery plotting, (she was an expert at the gradual unfolding of the mystery through the successful unearthing of clue after clue), that she dove right into mystery writing only. She was one of the first writers of detective fiction in America and distinguished herself by writing legally accurate stories, something like Law and Order in the way that the stories are accurate and sometimes based on actual cases.

Her many fans besides me, include such literary luminaries as Arthur Conan Doyle, Wilkie Collins, Mary Roberts Rinehart, and Agatha Christie. In fact, not just Christie, but Rinehart wrote that it was the novels of Anna Katharine Green which first inspired her to become writers of mystery fiction to.

A Strange Disappearance is her second novel, and a great mystery, I'm only half way through and I'm trying to ration myself because its soooo good! If you love a mystery, if you love Christie, or Rinehart, you'll love this book too!

Rating So Far, But Frustrating Problem

Another interesting mystery by this author; but to me it was not as interesting as her first novel ("The Leavenworth Case"). It is a little less about mystery and more about characters; but, that can be interesting to some, too. I just prefer a little more mystery. As with most Victorian era novels, I find when there is lot of dialogue (near the end), it becomes rather overly "dramatic" to our more modern ears which is why I believe some people may have found it hokey. If you read it carefully, however, you may find some interesting insight into this era's attitudes and thoughts about men, women, family ties, motives, NYC society, and other matters (at least through the author's eyes). I just wonder-would NYC police really have acted this way with respect to the criminals? (I will not go into detail-you'll have to read to the end.)
A problem I had with the Kindle version was that every time there was a note or something similar and the book said something like "and written on it was: " there was nothing there, no indication of what was written (I think there are about four times this occurred). I assume it has something to do with the "translation" from the book form. It does not, perhaps, change the reader's understanding but is very annoying. There were the usual very minor typos.
The reason for MY three rather than four stars then is a combination of it not being as much a "mystery" as her first novel and the evident problems with it being translated into an electronic Kindle version.

The sewing girl in the New York mansion of wealthy Mr. Blake has been abducted. Traces of struggle and drops of blood are visible in her room. And yet how did the abductors get her out a window and down a tall ladder without some cooperation from her?

The housekeeper, Mrs. Daniels, appeals to police inspector Ebenezer Gryce to find the girl and keep the search quiet. She wants to protect the privacy of her aristocratic employer. Holman Blake, though relatively young, is reclusive and hates any sort of notoriety.

A Strange Disappearance was published in 1880, a dubious era in American law enforcement when the police would make a special effort if paid extra. Mrs. Daniels offers her savings to help fund the investigation, a strange act considering she's not a relative. But then there are lots of strange things about the sewing girl. Her room is curiously large and elegant for a servant, and she's been reading Shakespeare.

The investigation takes many a surprising direction, from an exclusive Charity Ball to the most disreputable streets in New York to a sinister old inn deep in the mountains of Vermont. Frustrated love and the love of wealth play an important role in a plot rich in mystery and dark deeds.

The charming narrator is Q, assistant to Inspector Gryce, a rising young detective who's proud of his disguises, adept at flirting with housemaids and landladies and happy to take risks in a good cause.

Anna Katharine Green invented many of the conventions of detective fiction. Wilkie Collins commented on her powers of invention, and Agatha Christie admitted being influenced by her. She isn't really a polished writer, and her style is pure melodrama, but she's fun reading. I'm on a mission to read all her mysteries.
