Marc Schonbrun is an educator, writer, and performer in the San Francisco Bay Area. Marc’s musical resume ranges from classical to jazz trio and rock concerts. He is an active lecturer on guitar and music technology, and he frequently tours the country educating musicians and teachers. He is the author of several books on music, including The Everything Reading Music Book with CD, The Only Guitar Book You’ll Ever Need, The Everything Music Theory Book with CD, and The Everything Essential Music Theory Book, among others. He lives in San Jose, CA.

Fits the need

Was looking for a theory book to help a struggling college theory student. This explains things more simply than a typical college level textbook. Works for students who had not yet grasped the fundamentals.

Concise and easy to understand

I bought this book to learn the elements of music and to try to understand why I liked certain styles of music. I can play the piano at the intermediate level by just playing the notes on the sheet music, but didn't really understand how the music was put together so could not add anything to the music of my own. This book helped me understand all the key elements of music and what "usually" sounds good and what "usually" doesn't go too well together. Although it gets fairly technical, Marc Schonbrun does a very good job of explaining some arcane (but important!) music theory with a sense of humor and a common touch which does not intimidate the non-professional reader. Recommended especially for those, like me, who took up an instrument late in life and learned how to play by sheer determination but lacks the theoretical knowledge to advance their playing abilities.

Not a great choice for real world application of music theory...

So I guess I am going to be the first less than glowing review for this book. I have been putting off writing this review for a while. I am a full time guitarist and guitar instructor with almost 40 years of overall experience. I usually use the MI Book "Harmony and Theory" text book with my students. It is still the most concise and real world music theory book I have found. However, it does skip a couple of concepts that I find curious. so I bought this book to check it out as a possible source for my students.
First off, I think you need tight and tidy definitions for important basic concepts. These music definitions MUST be in agreement with what the ear perceives. Good definitions must also be applicable and useful for the student to apply to their music. This book falls way short on those points, in my opinion. All of the definitions given in the book are the typical academic "music speak" stuff that are frankly not CLEAR for the untrained to understand. The chapter on Intervals is especially unclear. What the hell is an "Advanced" interval? Seriously? Intervals are intervals. There are basically two ways to calculate them and this book muddles those two methods together in a very unclear way.
The book also lacks exercises for the student to work out and practice. It spends so much time on "Lecturing" on the subject but does not have the student apply the lessons. The MI book is vastly superior in this regard.
I am sorry for giving a negative review to a fellow musician and educator but I really do not care for this book.
