The true story of the birth of the 60's counterculture revolution

Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters become larger than life characters in Tom Wolfe's novelistic treatment of this true story based on extensive interviews with the people involved. This is like Gonzo journalism. I don't know if this predated Hunter S. Thompson, but the style is very entertaining and propels you into the story, especially when he is describing the acid trips, and yes there were many. This starts before LSD was illegal. The Pranksters had the original painted school bus on their cross country trip and the cops had no idea what they were up to. No one had ever seen anything like it. Also documented, of course, are the Acid Tests with the Grateful Dead providing the soundtrack. A must read for anyone with an interest in the hippy movement of the 60's.

A glimpse into the bus

A great book, one of my favorites. Fascinating subject, fun to read, and extremely well written, especially since it's narrative non-fiction. Given that half of the action occurs in the characters' minds, and given that three fourths of that is neither real nor readily describable, it has to be said that Wolfe did a truly expert job.

Great History of the American Psychedelic Acid Movement

This book is around 400 pages and a very detailed history, many stories, and it's hard to remember all the facts, you'll have to read the book yourself for that. The story is of the "Intrepid Travelers," Ken Kesey and The Merry Pranksters, a communal group of acid ingesters who were the progenitors of the acid consciousness in the California, in the US, in the world's consciousness of awareness . . . "your either on the bus or off the bus."

It was the influential chemists, Al Hubbard, Dr. Spaulding and the psychologists, Timothy Leary and Richard Albert, the Harvard psychology professors, who discovered for themselves psylobilin and with Michael Hollingshead and Albert Hoffman, LSD and subsequently held experiments using the right set and setting with experienced psychedelic guides. Yet to this the Merry Pranksters would say, "f**k that!" because they were from a different movie of living; in the now, the unserene and lurid art, your brain being your only guide, not some experienced taker and specific setting for a safe non-freak-out trip (and there were a lot of "freak-outs" from many young, emotionally inexperienced). And the acid influenced cultural movement they began in the early 1960's. It was Leary and Albert who endorsed the "set and setting," the intellectual approach or non-organizational religious approach, the religious experience of the mystics, in their dialogue with acid and mushrooms. With Kesey and the Pranksters it was spontaneous, wild party kind of living in Day-Glow colors, in the multimedia sound and movie.

The Pranksters account starts in North Beach on Perry Lane, which becomes a major hang out for all sorts and eventually ends up in a cottage near La Honda, where the loud party of outlandish, Day-Glo painted woods - rigged with microphones and massive sound equipment, in the communal life takes on a new meaning. The Hell's Angels befriend the Pranksters and there are stories of personalities, telepathic and psychic connections and synchronicity in new fields of human life, the overmind, the collective unspoken mind of the psychedelic group. The religious realm of mystical awareness as in the game of I-Ching and dream wars. The Jungian "synchronicity" seemed to occur uncanningly many times, as their bus out of gas in the middle of nowhere only to have a tanker pull up and fuel them from nowhere. The sign on their door welcoming the Hell's Angels to end up having them and succeeding in their prankster madness. The sign on their door welcoming the Beatles, did not synchronize them to appear, but what did was having Oswley appear, the famous acid maker, who in the ways of synchronistic noncausal effect, was responsible for the finest acid which spread to England, the acid that brought the Beatles to experience the unspoken mind which ended them up traveling by bus across the English countryside with cameras and microphones.

Imagine a Day-Glo painted bus, the magic bus, with Day-Glo painted people and clothes, tripping on acid traveling from California to the New York World's Faire with music blasting, a freak show on wheels, all in the year 1964! And Neil Cassidy (Jack Kerouac's buddy and drive from On The Road) driving the bus!! And their trip to the legendary Millbrook, thinking it would be some historic meeting with Leary and the Pranksters, but instead it was the mystical religious and intellectuals verses the wild party, American flag draped, painted, loud blaring music, party animals of psychedelic madness. I think it relates to the age and the introvert and/or extrovert type personalities that played the large part.

It was actually Stewart Brand who thought up the great Trip Festival of January 1966. The series of acid test parties held by Kesey and the Pranksters helped spawn the movement of higher consciousness, all held at the last minute, the same day notification was put, and the Pranksters playing their instruments, then finding a local band, the warlocks - later known as the Grateful Dead - to play and Roy Seburn's light shows at the acid tests. It was the acid test held in a Unitarian church where the Kool-Aid was spiked, unknowingly to those attending. It was not teachings in the stiff, reverent language and texts of scholarly limnings found in various religions being taught but instead an aura, a religious experience, an awareness that flashed deeper than cerebration, the tradition of the great prophets. People like the beats Allen Ginsberg and his entourage and Neil Cassidy were there. As this spread, so the acid tests, later without Kesey and Haight Ashbury became the scene.

Later on Kesey gets busted twice for weed and is on the run from the law, to Mexico and back until caught - he was in their movie that time, fortunately most charges dropped. A lot to read of the characters and generally a great book to get an idea of a unique and special time and place in history where a much larger degree of freedom existed for the white middle class with the ability to gain other realms of consciousness available for the taking. A great pictorial book on this is "On The Bus" by Paul Perry, Michael Schwartz, Neil Ortenberg & Ken Babbs.

About the Author
Wallace J. Hopp is the Herrick Professor of Manufacturing and Associate Dean for Faculty and Research in the Ross School of Business, and a Professor of Industrial and Operations Engineering, at the University of Michigan. His research focuses on the design, control, and management of operations systems, with emphasis on manufacturing and supply chain systems, innovation processes, and health care systems. His prior publications include the books Factory Physics and Supply Chain Science, in addition to numerous research papers and book chapters. He has served as editor-in-chief of Management Science, president of the Production and Operations Management Society, and consultant to a wide range of companies. Hopp’s research and teaching have been recognized with a number of awards, including the IIE Joint Publishers Book-of-the- Year Award, the IIE Technical Innovation Award, the SME Education Award, and Fellow Awards from IIE, INFORMS, MSOM, POMS, and SME.

William S. Lovejoy is the Raymond T. Perring Family Professor of Business Administration and Professor in the Operations and Technology department of the Ross School of Business,University of Michigan, with a joint appointment in the School of Art and Design. Professor Lovejoy held positions in both the private and the public sectors before joining academia. He works with companies on new product development, the management of innovation, and process assessment and improvement; he works with hospitals and clinics on health care operations. His courses have enjoyed coverage by CNN, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, and Businessweek. His past editorial activities include department editor for the Operations and Supply Chains department of Management Science, and senior editor for Manufacturing and Services Operations Management. He is a fellow in the Production and Operations Management Society.

Jeffrey S. Desmond is an Associate Chief of Staff at the University of Michigan Health System and Associate Chair for Clinical Operations in the Department of Emergency Medicine. He is a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Michigan Medical School. He received his MD from the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston and did his residency in Emergency Medicine at the University of Massachusetts. He is the co-founder of the Graduate Medical Education Health Care Administration Track and has a strong interest in the development of physician leaders. His research focuses on the operational aspects of emergency care, and in addition to publishing in peer-reviewed journals he has guided or mentored numerous applied operations design and improvement projects.

Christopher R. Friese received his BSN and PhD from the University of Pennsylvania and is an Assistant Professor at the University of Michigan School of Nursing. He remains clinically active as an inpatient staff nurse at the University of Michigan Health System and holds advanced oncology certification. His research focuses on patient, provider, and system-related factors that influence care outcomes. His findings have been cited by the Institute of Medicine’s Future of Nursing report, the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, and two state Boards of Nursing to reform nursing educational policy. His work has helped guide oncology nurses in daily patient care, and through his leadership positions with the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the National Quality Forum he broadened quality measurement initiatives to include nursing-sensitive outcomes. In October 2012, he will be inducted as a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing in recognition of his nursing leadership.

Steven L. Kronick is the Service Chief of Adult Emergency Medicine and an Associate Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Michigan. He received his MD from the University of Texas and his MS in Clinical Research Design and Statistical Analysis from the University of Michigan School of Public Health. He completed residencies in Internal Medicine at the University of Michigan and Emergency Medicine at Henry Ford Hospital. He is the director of Advanced Cardiac Life Support programs at UMHS and chairs the institutional CPR Committee.He is an item writer for the American Board of Emergency Medicine and has served on the American Heart Association’s ACLS Committee and on the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation’s Task Force on the Consensus on Science. His research interests focus on emergency medicine operations and cardiac arrest in the hospital setting.

Michael W. Mulholland is the Frederick A. Coller Distinguished Professor and Chair, Department of Surgery at the University of Michigan Medical School. He also serves as Surgeon-in-Chief of University Hospital. His clinical interests are in gastrointestinal surgery with expertise in the treatment of pancreatic and biliary cancer, neoplastic diseases of the gastrointestinal tract and biliary reconstruction. His research interests include neurocrine control of pancreatic exocrine secretion and enteric neurobiology. He is the principal director of a research laboratory that has been continuously funded by the NIH since 1986. In 2004, he received the MERIT Award from the NIH for his work. In 2004 he was elected a member of the Institutes of Medicine of the National Academies. Dr. Mulholland is the senior editor of the textbook Surgery: Scientific Principles and Practice which has become the leading text in the field.

James French Professor of Diagnostic Pathology, Director of the Divisions of Anatomic Pathology and MLabs, and Associate Director of the Medical Innovation Center at the University of Michigan. He received his MD from Washington University where he completed his residency in Anatomic Pathology at Barnes and Affiliated Hospitals followed by fellowship training at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. His research interests include pulmonary and general surgical pathology, patient safety, and practice innovation. He has published widely in the peer reviewed literature, co-authored multiple book chapters, and is co-editor of a textbook. Prior to Michigan he was a member of the Mayo Clinic staff where he was selected as a Distinguished Clinician in 2004. In 2010 he received the Outstanding Clinician Award and is a member of the League of Clinical Excellence at the University of Michigan Medical School.

Approaches things from the management angle

If the subject is of interest, then you'll probably want this book just because there are a limited number of titles that address this area.

I was disappointed that the authors seemed to lack any connection to the actual health care providers involved, and mostly they seemed fairly clueless about the issues that would affect for example the nursing staff. Their brief discussion of the state of the nursing profession and its issues seemed woefully out of date.

An actually readable book on Hospital Operations

I can't praise this book enough. I've been in the medical field 30 years. Most books on the subject of healthcare are long, boring, and impossible to slog through (in my experience). Many are excessively academic or political diatribes written for the masses. This book is the opposite of all of that.

"Hospital Operations" has found the right blend of statistics, science, pictures and well written prose. The breath of subjects is amazing (while constrained as well because no book can be long enough). This book won't make you an expert but you will have a solid grasp of all hospital functions. It gives excellent information on the state of healthcare, reforms, and how we can contribute as managers, consumers, and medical workers to make the system better and more efficient.

Readable, Usable and Thorough are the best words to describe this book. Something said for few advance management books, let alone healthcare books.

"Hospital Operations" deals with things as they are - not some theoretical "how the system should be" book. It gives the perspectives of the various stakeholders in care delivery - from the clinicians to patients. The book then highlights the history, resources, and issues of each topic. Then the author gives solid experience based management suggestions and best practices. References are extensive so that an area can be studied further for your particular discipline. The book includes stories, anecdotes and overall makes for both an informative and entertaining read. Wow, never thought I would ever use the word entertaining for a operations manual.

The charts and illustrations are very useful. The Appendixes - Management Principles and Historical Justification of Bed/Population Ratios - while a bit dryer than the text are outstanding resources.

Anyone considering a career in medicine should read this book. Anyone who wants to improve our existing medical system - including every politician - should read this book.

Cost saving improvements for fixing systems not employees~

It seems the healthcare industry has one answer for financial problems: layoffs. This is sad because it's usually a breakdown in the system that causes loss of profits and even patients' deaths. This technical manual is very specific but geared well towards managers in a variety of healthcare professions. Most notably office managers of physician owners of small to medium size clinics, office, and hospitals will benefit. Even higher up employees in larger health care chains should at least examine some of the material this text offers. Especially since many hospital systems are mired in paper and obsolete operations software. Did you ever wonder why it takes days or even weeks to get test results or even medical records transferred? Communication breakdown and overload.

This text contains information invaluable to health care service managers. From the OR to the ER, this book has beneficial information. The cost saving functions involved include newer computer systems to manage patient traffic and facilitate smooth transfer of records, test results, and other items. This can save lives and reduce malpractice suits (Whoa! We should NOT have administered drug A to this unconscious patient who is obviously allergic!).

But the most useful information and the assistance which would require less up front cost involve plans for scheduling and trimming excess costs from budgets.

It is very thorough, and will undoubtedly save money for those who read and implement the procedures recommended in this text. If you are looking to save money on the bottom line for your clinic or ER, or an incoming health care professional or manager, then this is for you.

About the Author
Gilbert Rist is professor emeritus at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva, Switzerland. He first taught at the University of Tunis, became the Director of the Europe-Third World Centre in Geneva and, later on, Senior Researcher on a United Nations University Project. Afterwards he joined the Graduate Institute of Development Studies where he taught intercultural relations and social anthropology.

I purchased a similar book before but this is way better. I couldn't put it down once I started reading. If you are really interested in starting a vending business this is the way to go. It is very in depth down to the weight and average vending amount of candy vending. This book will either give you confidence to keep on your path with this great knowledge or go the other way. Overall, if you are just getting started this is a definite must have. You will not regret the purchase.

About the Author
Dr. Braja M. Das was Dean of the College of Engineering and Computer Science at California State University, Sacramento from 1994 to 2006. Prior to 1994, he was Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs and Research at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, Illinois. The author of more than 250 technical papers, his primary areas of research are shallow foundations, earth anchors, and geosynthetics. Dr. Das received his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and has most recently edited Geotechnical Engineering Handbook (2010) and co-authored Geotechnical Engineering (2010).

Dr. Sanjay Kumar Shukla is the Program Leader of the Discipline of Civil Engineering at Edith Cowan University in Australia. He has more than 20 years of teaching, research, and consultancy experience in the field of geotechnical engineering and geosynthetics. He has authored over 100 research papers and technical articles including 72 refereed journal publications. Sanjay is a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers (Australia) and a Life Fellow of the Institution of Engineers (India) and the Indian Geotechnical Society.

A great textbook designed for instructors and students

I received the book free of charge from the publisher to write a review. Having studied geotechnical engineering before and being a professor now, I found that the book is well designed for instructors and students. I like that each chapter starts with theory introduction and shows clear & straightforward graphics and images to help explain the points. Equations are clearly presented step by step. Many other books show complicated processes that confuse readers. This book does a good job in summarizing main points. Some application examples may be shown, followed by homework questions/answers at the end of each chapter. References are well documented. A great textbook!

This publication on Earth Anchors (second edition) by B M Das and Sanjay Kumar Shukla and published by J Ross Publishing, is an excellent contribution in the area of Geotechnical Engineering and addresses the design of different types of earth anchors in various ground conditions. The contribution compiles the existing as well as latest contributions in the area in a succinct manner.

Chapter one covers the general introduction, types of anchors and their applications. Chapter two covers the horizontal plate anchors in sand, various theories, load displacement relationship, uplift capacity etc. Chapter three addresses the horizontal anchors in clay on similar lines. Chapter four presents the contributions in the form of various theories, load displacement relationship, and design in sand followed by evaluation of loads in the case of clay. Chapter five covers work in the area of inclined anchors in sand and clay. Chapters six and seven present the developments in helical anchors in sand and clay. Chapter eight covers design of anchor piles. Chapter nine covers suction caisson and drag anchors. Chapter ten covers a few topics on geoanchors.

More O'Sullivan--What could be better?

Timothy O'Sullivan is widely considered to be one of the greatest photographers of the western landscape, and this fine volume demonstrates why. My first experience with Timothy O'Sullivan was in 1981, when I saw his work at the Philadelphia Museum's "American Frontiers" show, right when I was beginning to make my own photographs of the landscape. For the past 30 years, the catalog from that show was the most current publication featuring O'Sullivan's landscape work.

The past two years have have seen the publication of three fine volumes of O'Sullivan's work--"Framing the West: The Survey Photographs of Timothy O'Sullivan", "Shoshone Falls", and now "The King Survey Photographs"--all of which contribute an understanding and appreciation of O'Sullivan's work.

This volume focuses on the King Survey, between 1867 and 1869, including 78 full page plates as well as a complete thumbnail catalog of all images made in the survey. Some of these images are familiar, but more are new. The inclusion of an essay and several "rephotographic" images by Mark Klett also contributes to the book. The printing is very solid (duplicating the beauty of gold toned albumen prints is sometimes tricky--this book does it as well as anything I've seen).

The book is priced very modestly for a volume of this quality--and has been produced in a modest run of only 2800 copies--so my advice is to buy this book--now.

Really good reproductions of great photographs

This is a wonderful book. Timothy O'Sullivan is a great photographer, and this book has excellent reproductions of many of his plates. It also has enough reproductions of a set so that one can see how he moved around and got his best compositions.

The text is reasonably well written (by several contributors) but too dry and scholarly to help much in appreciating O' Sullivan's life or methods. The book: American Frontiers: The Photographs of Timothy H. O'Sullivan, 1867-1874, which one can get used from Amazon, is better at this.

O'Sullivans iconic Great West photographs well presented.

"The King Survey Photographs" is an excellent collection of the early west photographs. Timothy O"Sullivan was an excellent early day, pioneering photographer in both the technics he used and where he took his photographs.

The King Survey was the first of several expeditions organized by the U.S. Army Topographical Engineers, being four seasons between 1867 and 1872. This team moved from Eastern California to the Great Plains mostly along the 40th parallel crossing the Great Basin and the Rocky Mountains from Carson city, Nevada to Cheyenne, Wyoming. Timothy O'Sullivan was the first of a series of full time photographers to be associated with these surveys. Clarance King led an scientific exploration of data collection, specimen hunting and photography along with sketches, diagrams, maps of the Great West. These are the iconic photographs from that effort that made Timothy O"Sullivan famous. He also was a civil war photographer.

The format of the book is large, giving room for the images. The printing is well done, rendering the photographs clearly. The well done discussion of the photographs is extensive and informative.

For those interested in early views of the Great West, this is a necessary collection.
