Anchors are primarily used in the construction of foundations of earth-supported and earth-retaining structures. The fundamental reason for using earth anchors in construction is to transmit the outwardly directed load to the soil at a greater depth and/or farther away from the structure. Although earth anchors have been used in practice for several hundred years, proper theoretical developments for purposes of modern engineering designs have taken place only during the past 40 to 45 years. This book summarizes most theoretical and experimental works directed toward the development of proper relationships for the ultimate and allowable holding capacity of earth anchors.

Review
This book expertly summarizes the existing theories related to the uplift/pullout capacity of horizontal anchor plates, vertical anchor plates, helical anchors, and anchor piles. The new edition also includes chapters related to suction caisson and drag anchors, and geo-anchors. Such a comprehensive coverage of earth anchors will be an extremely helpful reference for both practitioners and researchers. --Professor Khaled Sobhan, Ph.D., Associate Director, Center for Marine Structures and Geotechnique, Florida Atlantic University

A great textbook designed for instructors and students
By Ming Li
I received the book free of charge from the publisher to write a review. Having studied geotechnical engineering before and being a professor now, I found that the book is well designed for instructors and students. I like that each chapter starts with theory introduction and shows clear & straightforward graphics and images to help explain the points. Equations are clearly presented step by step. Many other books show complicated processes that confuse readers. This book does a good job in summarizing main points. Some application examples may be shown, followed by homework questions/answers at the end of each chapter. References are well documented. A great textbook!

Earth Anchors, Second Edition (Hardcover)
By Kianoosh Hatami
The authors have adopted a user-friendly format to organize the content of their textbook. They have done a good job in introducing the existing theories and empirical methods for the calculation
and design of different types of anchors in each chapter which is typically followed by a 'summary and discussion' section and example problems. The self-assessment questions at the end of each
chapter are also a useful addition to help the reader review the highlights of the respective chapter. This book is a useful reference for geotechnical engineering students, researchers and
practicing engineers on the topic of earth anchors.

Well written, useful for both students and professionals.
By G. L. Sivakumar Babu
This publication on Earth Anchors (second edition) by B M Das and Sanjay Kumar Shukla and published by J Ross Publishing, is an excellent contribution in the area of Geotechnical Engineering and addresses the design of different types of earth anchors in various ground conditions. The contribution compiles the existing as well as latest contributions in the area in a succinct manner.
Chapter one covers the general introduction, types of anchors and their applications. Chapter two covers the horizontal plate anchors in sand, various theories, load displacement relationship, uplift capacity etc. Chapter three addresses the horizontal anchors in clay on similar lines. Chapter four presents the contributions in the form of various theories, load displacement relationship, and design in sand followed by evaluation of loads in the case of clay. Chapter five covers work in the area of inclined anchors in sand and clay. Chapters six and seven present the developments in helical anchors in sand and clay. Chapter eight covers design of anchor piles. Chapter nine covers suction caisson and drag anchors. Chapter ten covers a few topics on geoanchors.
The book is well written and is useful for students at senior level in Bachelor course Civil Engineering and in Masters Course in geotechnical/infrastructural/structural engineering. It is also useful to professionals in the area of geotechnical engineering and ground improvement and
covers theories, design principles and examples which can be used for design.
