About the Author
Gilbert Rist is professor emeritus at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva, Switzerland. He first taught at the University of Tunis, became the Director of the Europe-Third World Centre in Geneva and, later on, Senior Researcher on a United Nations University Project. Afterwards he joined the Graduate Institute of Development Studies where he taught intercultural relations and social anthropology.

I purchased a similar book before but this is way better. I couldn't put it down once I started reading. If you are really interested in starting a vending business this is the way to go. It is very in depth down to the weight and average vending amount of candy vending. This book will either give you confidence to keep on your path with this great knowledge or go the other way. Overall, if you are just getting started this is a definite must have. You will not regret the purchase.

About the Author
Dr. Braja M. Das was Dean of the College of Engineering and Computer Science at California State University, Sacramento from 1994 to 2006. Prior to 1994, he was Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs and Research at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, Illinois. The author of more than 250 technical papers, his primary areas of research are shallow foundations, earth anchors, and geosynthetics. Dr. Das received his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and has most recently edited Geotechnical Engineering Handbook (2010) and co-authored Geotechnical Engineering (2010).

Dr. Sanjay Kumar Shukla is the Program Leader of the Discipline of Civil Engineering at Edith Cowan University in Australia. He has more than 20 years of teaching, research, and consultancy experience in the field of geotechnical engineering and geosynthetics. He has authored over 100 research papers and technical articles including 72 refereed journal publications. Sanjay is a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers (Australia) and a Life Fellow of the Institution of Engineers (India) and the Indian Geotechnical Society.

A great textbook designed for instructors and students

I received the book free of charge from the publisher to write a review. Having studied geotechnical engineering before and being a professor now, I found that the book is well designed for instructors and students. I like that each chapter starts with theory introduction and shows clear & straightforward graphics and images to help explain the points. Equations are clearly presented step by step. Many other books show complicated processes that confuse readers. This book does a good job in summarizing main points. Some application examples may be shown, followed by homework questions/answers at the end of each chapter. References are well documented. A great textbook!

This publication on Earth Anchors (second edition) by B M Das and Sanjay Kumar Shukla and published by J Ross Publishing, is an excellent contribution in the area of Geotechnical Engineering and addresses the design of different types of earth anchors in various ground conditions. The contribution compiles the existing as well as latest contributions in the area in a succinct manner.

Chapter one covers the general introduction, types of anchors and their applications. Chapter two covers the horizontal plate anchors in sand, various theories, load displacement relationship, uplift capacity etc. Chapter three addresses the horizontal anchors in clay on similar lines. Chapter four presents the contributions in the form of various theories, load displacement relationship, and design in sand followed by evaluation of loads in the case of clay. Chapter five covers work in the area of inclined anchors in sand and clay. Chapters six and seven present the developments in helical anchors in sand and clay. Chapter eight covers design of anchor piles. Chapter nine covers suction caisson and drag anchors. Chapter ten covers a few topics on geoanchors.

The book is well written and is useful for students at senior level in Bachelor course Civil Engineering and in Masters Course in geotechnical/infrastructural/structural engineering. It is also useful to professionals in the area of geotechnical engineering and ground improvement and

More O'Sullivan--What could be better?

Timothy O'Sullivan is widely considered to be one of the greatest photographers of the western landscape, and this fine volume demonstrates why. My first experience with Timothy O'Sullivan was in 1981, when I saw his work at the Philadelphia Museum's "American Frontiers" show, right when I was beginning to make my own photographs of the landscape. For the past 30 years, the catalog from that show was the most current publication featuring O'Sullivan's landscape work.

The past two years have have seen the publication of three fine volumes of O'Sullivan's work--"Framing the West: The Survey Photographs of Timothy O'Sullivan", "Shoshone Falls", and now "The King Survey Photographs"--all of which contribute an understanding and appreciation of O'Sullivan's work.

This volume focuses on the King Survey, between 1867 and 1869, including 78 full page plates as well as a complete thumbnail catalog of all images made in the survey. Some of these images are familiar, but more are new. The inclusion of an essay and several "rephotographic" images by Mark Klett also contributes to the book. The printing is very solid (duplicating the beauty of gold toned albumen prints is sometimes tricky--this book does it as well as anything I've seen).

The book is priced very modestly for a volume of this quality--and has been produced in a modest run of only 2800 copies--so my advice is to buy this book--now.

Really good reproductions of great photographs

This is a wonderful book. Timothy O'Sullivan is a great photographer, and this book has excellent reproductions of many of his plates. It also has enough reproductions of a set so that one can see how he moved around and got his best compositions.

The text is reasonably well written (by several contributors) but too dry and scholarly to help much in appreciating O' Sullivan's life or methods. The book: American Frontiers: The Photographs of Timothy H. O'Sullivan, 1867-1874, which one can get used from Amazon, is better at this.

O'Sullivans iconic Great West photographs well presented.

"The King Survey Photographs" is an excellent collection of the early west photographs. Timothy O"Sullivan was an excellent early day, pioneering photographer in both the technics he used and where he took his photographs.

The King Survey was the first of several expeditions organized by the U.S. Army Topographical Engineers, being four seasons between 1867 and 1872. This team moved from Eastern California to the Great Plains mostly along the 40th parallel crossing the Great Basin and the Rocky Mountains from Carson city, Nevada to Cheyenne, Wyoming. Timothy O'Sullivan was the first of a series of full time photographers to be associated with these surveys. Clarance King led an scientific exploration of data collection, specimen hunting and photography along with sketches, diagrams, maps of the Great West. These are the iconic photographs from that effort that made Timothy O"Sullivan famous. He also was a civil war photographer.

The format of the book is large, giving room for the images. The printing is well done, rendering the photographs clearly. The well done discussion of the photographs is extensive and informative.

For those interested in early views of the Great West, this is a necessary collection.

Faith & Courage

This book is well written from beginning to end. This should be read by everyone young and old to understand what took place during World War II, in eastern Europe. The book tells Halina's story from her childhood to her older years. The atrocities committed by the Nazis are disturbing to read, but need to be known.The story goes into detail how Halina helped and saved as many Jewish people as she possibly could. Many pictures are also included in the book of Halina and of the war era.

Another testimony for the truth about the Nazi persecution during WWII

Another good book about the Nazi persecution in Poland during WWII. This book follows the life of Halina Ostik, a survivor. Mrs. Ostik was not a Jew, but she supported the Jews in the ghetto in Warsaw during WWII and later in Argentina and then back in Poland in her last years as an employee of Friends of Israel. The book is a bit choppy at times (jumping around from topic to topic), but it is still well worth reading the first person account quotes of someone who lived through those most difficult times. I also recommend (even more so) the book "Zvi" by this same author. It is a book that you won't be able to put down.

McQuaid did a very good job telling Halina's story! It's always difficult to read about the horrors of the Holocaust, but we need to constantly remind ourselves of what these people went through. I was not aware of all that Poland endured and this was quite an eye-opener....Halina's was surely a hero and her God and her faith gave her the courage to do what she did.

Hi! I have not purchased this book but I figured that given the other review on here, I should clarify that the Nutshell series are meant for law students (probably practitioners too). The prior reviewer obviously didn't realize this.

M&A Nutshell

All hail this nutshell. I may be giving this nutshell more credit than its worth, because it saved me on my M&A final. This nutshell gave me everything I needed to know for my take home M&A final. I had 48 hours to basically teach myself M&A and finish the final. I did finish the final and came out with a good grade in the class all thanks to this handy little nutshell, which taught me everything I needed to know. This nutshell is literally just a really condensed version of the textbook by Oesterle, but its good because the nutshell leaves in all the necessary stuff while removing all the fluff from the textbook.

There are some typos in this electronic version which in some case cast doubt on the accuracy of the text. Otherwise, my experience of reading this book is quite satisfactory.
